Mark Cuban says Trump has turned the Republican Party into his own "family business." AdvertisementMark Cuban said former President Donald Trump has made the Republican Party his "family business." The former president has five children — Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, Tiffany Trump, and Barron Trump. Lara Trump is a former TV news producer and has been a fixture in her father-in-law's political career. Cuban and representatives of Trump didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside business hours.

Bernie Moreno, Republican Senate candidate for Ohio, at the RNC in Milwaukee, Wis., on July 16. “Honestly I think Bernie is heading in the right direction but handed Sherrod an opening with that.”Democrats have been hammering Republicans across the country on the abortion issue. Some Republicans warned that the party’s failure to counter abortion attacks cost them crucial seats that year. In 2022, exit polling found Democrats had an 11-point advantage on the issue of abortion. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points.

The fight over Wisconsin — considered a must-win for Harris as part of Democrats’ so-called blue wall — could tilt the election. Tim Walz has re-energized staff members in the state, a campaign official told NBC News. With more than 200 staffers statewide, the Harris campaign touts 48 offices across Wisconsin, including some in smaller, more rural areas that Trump won in 2020. But the Trump campaign is mounting its own effort in the state. An RNC official also said the Trump campaign and the Wisconsin GOP have more than 70 staff members and 40 offices across the state.

Attempts to purge voter rolls increase as election nears
  + stars: | 2024-09-20 | by ( Devan Cole | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
As of Tuesday, at least three dozen cases related to voter rolls and their maintenance are pending in 19 states, according to the liberal-leaning Democracy Docket, which tracks election litigation. The right-wing effort to purge voter rolls has largely centered around claims that noncitizens are casting illegal votes in favor of Democrats. “There’s always been some litigation about voter rolls and list maintenance. Reviewing voter rolls is a regular practice for states, and despite the 90-day quiet period, the NVRA does allow individuals to ask to be taken off lists close to an election. The federal law exempts some states if they allow voter registration on Election Day at polling centers where federal elections are conducted.

“They have early voting, late voting, everything is so ridiculous,” Trump said onstage in Palm Beach, Florida, in July. It is great if you want to vote early,” Whatley said during a tour stop in Tampa, Florida, this summer. He voted early this month in his home state of Florida and posted a TikTok video encouraging people to vote early. He also occasionally straightly delivers a prepared remark that encourages early voting without caveating his skepticism of the practice. Still, the inconsistency of Trump’s early voting messaging has led many of his supporters toward cynicism and confusion around the topic.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday announced it will not formally endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election, ending months of speculation about whether the labor union would back Republican Donald Trump or Democrat Kamala Harris. With 1.3 million members, the Teamsters union is one of the largest labor groups in the country. "As the strongest and most democratic labor union in America, it was vital for our members to drive this endorsement process. In a national survey of Teamsters members conducted after the Sept. 10 presidential debate, union members overwhelmingly backed Trump over Harris, 58% to 31%, according to results published by the union ahead of its formal endorsement. "'Right to work' laws only exist to try to kill labor unions," Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman said in the statement.

CNN —The International Brotherhood of Teamsters declined to endorse a presidential candidate on Wednesday after releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its members supported former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris. The Trump campaign highlighted that support from “rank-and-file” Teamsters members following the union’s announcement that it would not be endorsing. CNN previously reported that rank-and-file union membership had large pockets of Trump support, even as major labor leaders endorsed Harris. That survey also included Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who garnered about 6% of members’ support. While union members are thought of as a traditionally Democratic voting bloc, Trump has been working to make inroads among rank-and-file members.

But increasingly concerned Republicans fear the Trump team is firing blanks. So I just think that’s super overblown criticism by people who don’t know what they’re talking about.”‘Some groups are better than others’Concerns over Republican field efforts are nothing new. Large-scale conservative canvassing efforts, these Republicans explained, were plagued with issues including fraudulent and untrustworthy data entries. The senior Trump campaign official said the campaign was not caught off guard by Turning Point having a more limited scope, saying it has been working closely with the organization. “You gotta remember, Donald Trump got more votes for a sitting president than ever before in history,” this person said.

Eight states will have constitutional amendments backed by Republican lawmakers on the November ballot designed to make clear that only American citizens can vote in elections in those states. But it’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in elections in those states and at the federal level, and it rarely happens. Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, has long made false claims that noncitizens are voting in elections and that Democrats have helped them enter the country to cast those ballots. No state constitution in the U.S. allows noncitizens to vote. While Americans for Citizen Voting said it has no formal or informal relationship with the Trump campaign or the RNC, its chairman, Paul Jacob, said at a recent press conference that he hopes the ballot measures will help improve voter turnout.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled Friday that mail ballots that are improperly dated won't be counted in November, a move that could have major implications in the closely divided battleground state. The decision reverses a lower court ruling from last month that found it was unconstitutional to reject mail ballots that had a missing or incorrect date. "This makes mail voting in the Keystone State less susceptible to fraud," he said. "Today’s procedural ruling is a setback for Pennsylvania voters, but we will keep fighting for them. Democrats have utilized mail voting more heavily than Republicans in recent elections in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

CNN —A nearly four-year-old legal effort by Black voters to convince a court to prevent former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party from potentially intimidating voters and poll workers is quietly coming back to life as the 2024 election approaches. First brought in the days following the 2020 election, the lawsuit has moved slowly through the federal courts in Washington, DC, as Trump’s claims of presidential immunity from civil lawsuits were being litigated. It coincidently has landed before US District Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge handling the federal election subversion charges against Trump. Attorneys for Trump and the RNC have asked to dismiss the case, saying any conduct at issue constitutes protected political speech. A federal judge found the two men liable for targeting Black voters in 2023, saying that their actions ran afoul of the KKK Act, the VRA and other laws.

Harris’ viewership victory amounted to a blow for Trump, who is famously obsessed with television ratings and the size of his crowds. The boost in viewership was also seen at ABC with 4.2 million viewers, and CNN with 3.9 million. Last month’s Republican convention in Milwaukee took place just days after the assassination attempt on Trump. As pressure mounted, Biden ended his campaign the weekend after the Republican convention. The singer had previously given the Harris campaign permission to use her 2016 hit “Freedom,” which played Thursday night as Harris took the stage.

The closing night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday drew about 26.2 million TV viewers, narrowly outpacing the Republican National Convention's final night, according to data from the media measurement company Nielsen. The convention's final night aired across 15 television networks and drew about 820,000 more viewers than the estimated 25.4 million people who watched the final night of the Republican event, Nielsen reported. The first night of the Republican convention drew an estimated 18.13 million viewers, compared to around 20 million viewers on the DNC's opening night, according to Nielsen. The DNC's closing night exceeded viewership for the convention’s final night four years ago, when 24.6 million viewers tuned in across cable and TV for President Joe Biden’s speech. In 2016, 30 million viewers tuned in for the final night of the 2016 Democratic convention.

The biggest chunk – about $1.9 million – was spent by Trump’s campaign and fundraising committees on a Trump-owned company that operates his jet. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, said that “committees are paying the fair market rate for all venues and services” provided by Trump businesses. The dynamic of candidates shelling out thousands on Trump’s businesses while vying for his endorsement – which can make or break Republican campaigns – is an example of how politics has boosted his businesses’ bottom line. About 150 congressional candidates have reported spending campaign funds at Trump businesses, including some Democrats in the years before his first presidential bid. Walker’s campaign spent a total of nearly $215,000 at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s West Palm Beach golf club and his Las Vegas hotel.

In contrast, at the RNC convention, President Biden was mentioned only twice in four days.”Facts First: Kennedy’s claim about Biden mentions at the Republican National Convention is not even close to true. The Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, said the word “Biden” 12 times in his own convention speech. Trump himself said “Biden” twice in his convention speech (during a single reference), but Kennedy’s claim was about the Republicans’ four-day gathering as a whole. The false claim that Biden was mentioned a total of twice over the four days of the Republican convention has been circulating on social media this week. Opinion | Nate Silver on How Kamala Harris Changed the Odds

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

Leavitt later clarified, "As President Trump said numerous times during the press conference, the questions being asked were difficult to hear. His position on mifepristone remains the same — the Supreme Court unanimously decided on the issue and the matter is settled." Also at Thursday's press conference, Trump was also asked how he planned to vote in Florida’s ballot initiative this fall to expand abortion access. In June, the Supreme Court ruled that the plaintiffs did not have standing to win the case, preserving access nationwide to abortion pills. Former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, on Sunday expressed confidence in Georgia’s election security, a contrast with Trump’s recent attacks against Republican state officials Gov. At the time, Trump and his allies filed a series of lawsuits in an effort to overturn the 2020 election results, but none succeeded due to a lack of evidence. Ahead of the 2024 election, the Trump campaign and the RNC have pledged to enlist 100,000 volunteers and attorneys to monitor votes in battleground states. On Jan. 2, 2021, Trump also called Raffensperger, a Republican, urging the top Georgia election official to “find” the votes to toss out Biden’s victory in the battleground state. Trump and 18 co-defendants last year were charged with racketeering in connection with their efforts to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia.

More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.

Now, the broader conservative movement is trying to figure out what it means for a potential second Trump administration. “Since the Fall of 2023, President Trump’s campaign made it clear that only President Trump and the campaign, and NOT any other organization or former staff, represent policies for the second term,” Alvarez said in a statement. Still, staffing the administration could be a major place where Project 2025’s work plays into a Trump administration, even if the Trump campaign swatted the effort aside. “If Trump is re-elected, as we hope he will be, there will be thousands of appointments,” said Steven Groves, who helped put together the Project 2025 policy book. U.S. President Donald Trump speaks on Day 4 of the Republican National Convention (RNC), at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S., July 18, 2024. Donald Trump is set to field reporters' questions at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention in Chicago on Wednesday, as he re-tools his presidential campaign to combat his likely rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. The Republican nominee's Q&A before a live convention audience is expected to focus on the biggest issues facing the Black community, NABJ said. The event gives Trump, who won just 12% of Black voters in his 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden, an opportunity to directly appeal to voters of color. The decision by NABJ, the nation's largest association of journalists of color, to host Trump quickly spurred a backlash both inside and outside the group.

In initial data from late June and through July, about 8 in 10 Americans said each week that they’d read or heard at least something about Biden or Trump, respectively. But the focus had shifted away from his criminal conviction: first to his debate against Biden, and then to the assassination attempt against him. By contrast, two more standard campaign milestones – the Republican National Convention and Trump’s selection of a running mate – drew less public attention. The Breakthrough survey project will run throughout the 2024 campaign, tracking the things Americans say they read, hear and see about the candidates. Looking at the trend over time shows a sharp divergence between the conversations around Trump and Biden following the presidential debate.
