But here's the thing: It's not just that tens of thousands of middle managers have lost their jobs. But hiring had plunged by 43% for middle managers and 57% for senior leaders. But it's unclear whether getting rid of middle managers actually made companies run more efficiently. But study after study found that when middle managers do their jobs right, they bolster performance more than either top executives or ground-level employees. Companies are already discovering that having few middle managers is placing an enormous strain on their operations.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made self-sufficiency a major pillar of his economic strategy to make China a tech superpower. On Monday, the US Commerce Ministry announced curbs on the sale of two dozen types of semiconductor-making equipment and restrictions on numerous Chinese companies from accessing American technology. China’s Commerce Ministry condemned the move, accusing the US of “abuse” of export controls and posing “a significant threat” to the stability of global industrial and supply chains. ‘Strongest ever’ controlsSenior US officials have also accused China of outright stealing American-made AI software, which Beijing denies. Last October, the Commerce Ministry reduced the types of semiconductors that American companies can sell to China, citing the desire to close loopholes in regulations announced in 2022.

Dollar faces crunch week for U.S. rates, yen holds gains

The risk of an early hike was enough to keep the dollar pinned at 149.60 yen , having shed 3.3% last week in its worst run since July. The euro held at $1.0555, after bouncing 1.5% last week and away from a one-year trough of $1.0425. That left the dollar index flat at 105.790, having closed out November with a gain of 1.8% even after last week's setback. "But the bar for a further shift in expected interest rates in favor of the U.S. in the near term is quite high," he added. Political uncertainty is another drag for the single currency as investors wait to see if France's government can survive the week intact.

The decision to issue a blanket pardon for his son Hunter will forever be a part of the president’s legacy. For Biden, family has long come above nearly everything. After Beau Biden died of a glioblastoma brain tumor in 2015, the elder Biden’s bond with Hunter strengthened beyond words. It was not one reached, like so many Biden judgments, after long and tedious discussions with his circle of advisers. This was a far more of a family decision, where his role as a father – the only title he will keep for life – came above all else.

BUCHAREST, Romania Associated Press —Romanians cast ballots Sunday in a parliamentary election sandwiched between a two-round presidential race, the first of which has plunged the European Union and NATO member into unprecedented turmoil following allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference. By 5 p.m., about 7.5 million people – about 42% of eligible voters – had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, predicted the general election could also be reshaped by Georgescu’s success, with far-right parties possibly obtaining record highs. “The impact of the surprise in last Sunday’s presidential election will be significant, and we are going to wake up in a new political reality,” he told The Associated Press. Some have predicted that the far-right nationalist S.O.S Romania party, and the little-known Party of Young People, which has backed Georgescu, could pass the threshold.

Americans traveling to Europe next year may be in store for some bargains. “That’s a good thing for American tourists traveling abroad in Europe,” said Brendan McKenna, an international economist at Wells Fargo Economics. Now, euro parity is “back on the cards,” James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a research note Nov. 11. For one, the U.S. economy has “held up a lot better than anyone has been expecting” over the past year or two, in stark contrast with Europe, Reilly said. Of course, there’s a risk Europe retaliates with its own tariffs or somehow penalizes Americans by raising certain consumer prices, such as airfares, Reilly said.

Carolyn Auweloa and Mikey Burke have started Lahaina Community Land Trust so residents have the option to stay in Lahaina or sell within the community. Before they can apply for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s rental assistance, homeowners must first exhaust all of their LOU and ALE policies, which cover rental costs when a disaster makes your home uninhabitable. Economists broadly dislike tariffs, saying they tend to increase prices for consumers — a likelihood that many company executives are already warning of. The new slate of tariffs Trump calls for would be much steeper and more far-reaching if fully implemented. “In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment and resulted in no inflation,” Trump transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.
