The expanding war in the Middle East, however, has reached a new boiling point as Israel has vowed a "painful" response to Iran's attack. The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could take aim at the Islamic Republic's oil infrastructure in retaliation, geopolitical and crude market analysts say. "The next turn in this retaliation spiral may very well involve oil – via the degrading of Iran's oil capacityor Iran's proxies attacking oil and gas shipping from the Persian Gulf," Piper Sandler analysts told clients in a Wednesday research note. If Iran's oil exports of around 1.8 million bpd were taken offline, prices would likely jump by at least $5 per barrel, McNally said. An escalation on this scale could send oil prices higher in increments of $10 per barrel, the analyst said.

U.S. crude oil prices drifted lower Tuesday as the risk of rising supply from OPEC+ overshadows a dramatic escalation of the war in the Middle East. Israel has dispatched ground forces into southern Lebanon after pounding the Iran-backed militia Hezbollah with airstrikes for days, eliminating much of the group's leadership. For now, traders remain focused on weak demand in China and the prospect of OPEC+ producing more oil starting in December, Croft said. Here are Tuesday's energy prices at 8:43 am ET:OPEC leader Saudi Arabia might be prepared to allow more oil back onto the market to pressure members such as Iraq with lower oil prices, said Bob McNally, president of Rapidan Energy. Saudi has become increasingly frustrated with Iraq producing more crude than then their production targets, McNally said.

A long road It's been a long and winding road for Waymo since its inception in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. The robotaxi service now has about 700 autonomous vehicles on the road across its markets. That changed about a year ago , when Uber added Waymo vehicles to its app. In February, Waymo recalled 444 of its vehicles after two Waymo vehicles hit a towed pickup truck in Phoenix. Barclays analyst Matthew Bouley is watching the data very closely as well and said a lot will depend on how consumers react as mortgage rates fall. Bouley said this is one of the clearest signs yet that a recent decline in mortgage rates is bringing buyers into the market. Slightly more than half the analysts who cover the stock rate it a buy or overweight, it said.

The S & P 500 is on the verge of something unexpected — especially for September. The broad market index entered the week less than 1% below a record last reached in July. Krinky isn't the only one on the Street treading carefully with the S & P 500 near record highs. "With the S & P 500 close to our YE 2024 price target again, we remain neutral on the S & P 500 for now," wrote Lori Calvasina, head of global equity research at RBC Capital Markets. "However, after a sharp move lower in 10-year yields, the earnings yield gap for the S & P 500 is starting to head in a more favorable direction for stocks," Calvasina added.

Apple announced on Monday that its AirPods Pro 2 headphones will become an FDA-cleared hearing aid in the coming weeks through a software update. Apple CEO Tim Cook has highlighted health features as the company's "most important contribution to mankind." The new feature is a free software update for some AirPods models and will be included with Apple's $249 AirPods Pro 2. Many over-the-counter hearing aids are much more expensive, according to buyers guides cited by the Hearing Loss Association of America, an advocacy group. Analysts say that adding health features like a hearing aid expands the market for the device, which could help sales.

Slowing rate of change in earnings growth There are two important trends to follow in earnings. In the case of Nvidia, earnings are continuing to increase, but the rate of change is decelerating. This earnings report will likely be the final time in this stretch that Nvidia will see triple-digit earnings growth. But the impact has been shrinking – just as the overall Mag 7 impact has been diminishing with second quarter earnings growth broadening out. Last season (Q1), Nvidia was responsible for a little more than one-third of the S & P 500's 8% earnings growth.
