The monarch arrived in the crimson velvet Robe of State, worn by his grandfather King George VI at his 1937 coronation, a crimson coronation tunic and cream silk overshirt with royal naval trousers. Charles was crowned with the historic St Edward's Crown that has been used since the coronation of King Charles II in 1661. Both left the Abbey in purple Robes of Estate - Charles', previously worn by George VI and Camilla's designed by the Royal School of Needlework and featuring nature-themed embroidery. Charles' siblings wore traditional robes, while his nieces - Princesses Beatrice, Eugenie, Zara and Lady Louise wore dresses or coats in fuchsia, blue and floral prints respectively. There were traditional outfits from across the Commonwealth and peers wore red robes.

It has been used at every coronation since King William IV's in 1831 and was first used by George III to travel to the State Opening of Parliament in 1762. "This is often thought to be the most sacred part of the ceremony," Charles Farris, Public Historian At Historic Royal Palaces, said. "The big moment, the big photograph moment, the big moment that everyone's going to be talking about, making memes of, making TikToks of, that's when the king is crowned, when the king has the crown put on his head". LONDON, May 1 (Reuters) - Britain's Prince William and his wife Kate released a new photograph of Princess Charlotte, the granddaughter of King Charles, on Monday, the day before her eighth birthday. Sat on a chair, Charlotte, the third in line to the British throne after her father and brother Prince George, flashed a beaming smile for the picture in a white, frill neckline frock designed with tiny pink and blue flowers. Charlotte, born in London on May 2, 2015, is William and Kate's second child and only daughter. George was born in July 2013 and the princess' younger brother Prince Louis was born in April 2018. The princess' birthday celebration this year falls just days before King Charles' coronation on May 6, which is set be a grand ceremony full of pomp, pageantry and religious significance.
