Overall, 150 women will serve on Capitol Hill in the new Congress, down from the record of 152 set in 2024. Partisan differences are more revealing: Democratic women in Congress overall and in the US House are setting new records, despite their party losing both chambers. Still, even as a percentage of total House candidates, women were down from 2022, with Republicans taking the steepest percentage hit. But her early conversations with another female Republican lawmaker – Oklahoma Rep. Stephanie Bice – were influential before she even decided to run. Several Republican women, however, are in position to chair committees in the Senate, including Maine’s Susan Collins atop the powerful Appropriations Committee.

While 2024 has been a breakout year for Broadcom — AI revenue increased 220% — the month of December has put it in record territory. In addition to AI chips, AI server clusters need powerful networking parts to train the most advanced models.

And like any chore, it's occasionally worth it to bring in a professional to help. "When this starts happening, I would recommend at least having a conversation with a tax professional," James says. When you receive money outside of work, there are now more ways to save on your taxes and, unfortunately, more ways you can potentially mess things up. Paying for expert help instead of doing your taxes on your own can help you minimize your current tax bill and avoid a costly audit down the road. Here are two situations financial experts say should have you considering hiring some tax help.

He marveled at the efficiency of the African oil palm, which can produce five times as much edible oil per acre as corn or soy. As environmental activists raised the alarm about the palm oil industry's toll on the tropical forests of Southeast Asia two decades ago, Unilever, the world's largest buyer of palm oil, teamed up with the World Wildlife Fund and other parties to establish the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Six years later, as a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, they sold that operation to Felda Global Ventures, the third-largest palm oil company in the world, for almost $200 million. Not only was García's government offering sweetheart deals to foreign investors under its National Plan to Promote Oil Palm, but the country had more than 3 million acres suitable for oil palm. It was Washington Bolívar, the activist who had helped Ucayali's Indigenous communities fight the palm oil plantations.

11 Data Points and Discoveries That Surprised Us in 2024One of our most important jobs at The Upshot is to give readers a kind of journalism that wouldn’t otherwise exist at The New York Times — in conception, execution or both. Early this year, researchers shared with us the first school-district-level data comparing students’ test scores before and after pandemic school closures. We expected that students in poor districts would remain further behind students in rich districts, and that was generally true. Some of our research confirmed patterns that have been observed before: On average, voters appeared to select new neighborhoods based, at least indirectly, on those neighborhoods’ partisanship. But our extraordinarily detailed data also let us dig into the dynamics of the years between the 2020 and 2024 elections.
