Vcg | Visual China Group | Getty ImagesMUNICH — Swedish electric vehicle maker Polestar plans to launch a smartphone in December alongside deliveries of its first car to be released in China, the company's CEO told CNBC. It will be the company's first car to be delivered in China, as it ramps up expansion in the world's biggest electric vehicle market. Alongside that, Polestar will take the unusual move of launching a smartphone carrying the brand's name. It stems from a joint venture created in June between Polestar and Xingji Meizu, a Chinese smartphone maker owned by Chinese auto giant Geely . And the Polestar smartphone would not be an attempt to grow market share.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker Polestar's operating loss narrowed in the second quarter as the auto industry slowly recovers from pandemic-related supply chain bottlenecks. Delayed production starts, job cuts and mounting competition from new Chinese rivals have meant a tough year for the company. While some have cut prices to boost demand from consumers grappling with higher living costs, Polestar has maintained its premium pricing. The company posted a net loss per share of $0.14 in the quarter, compared with $0.12 a year ago. Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter were $1.06 billion, compared with $884.3 million in the preceding three-month period.

The Polestar 3 SUV, originally expected late this year, has been pushed into early 2024 because of delays with its Volvo-developed software. Revenue for the second quarter jumped to $685.2 million from $589.1 million during the same quarter last year. Polestar delivered 15,765 vehicles in the second quarter, up 36% from a year earlier, and a total of 27,841 vehicles in the first half of 2023. Polestar had $1.06 billion in cash and equivalents as of the end of the second quarter, versus $884.3 million as of Mar. "We achieved record volume growth during the second quarter," CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement.

As August is known to be, it's been a rough month-to-date for all three of those stock market benchmarks so far. This past week, the overall market was oversold, according to Jim Cramer's trusted S & P Oscillator. After Friday's strong finish, we'll see if the market's oversold condition abates as two major themes play out in the week ahead: Earnings from two Club names — Salesforce (CRM) and Broadcom (AVGO) — and key economic reports ahead of September's Fed meeting. Outside of the labor market and inflation, we'll also get a look at the housing market with the pending home sales on Wednesday. As we heard from fellow Club name Palo Alto Networks (PANW) last week, companies are growing more cautious and more closely scrutinizing large sales deals.

Investors are underestimating a buying opportunity in Chinese EV maker Great Wall Motor, which could double its earnings from current levels, according to Ariel Investments. The Chinese SUV and pickup truck maker was named by the investment chief as a company to watch at a recent emerging markets panel. But Mallari-D'Auria said he expects Great Wall will grab market share in China as it increasingly builds out an SUV line with vehicles at higher price points. To be sure, there are risks around trading in Great Wall, whose primary listing is in Hong Kong. Over the longer term, the portfolio manager even expects Great Wall will start to gain market share in Europe, though while the near-term opportunity remains at home.

Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a sensor technology that uses invisible lasers to create a detailed 3D map of the sensor's surroundings. Playing into investors' intense interest in self-driving technology, many lidar startups went public via mergers with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, over the last few years.

It's just too early to tell," said George Glassman, president of Glassman Automotive Group, which sells five automotive brands outside Detroit. Since then, VinFast shares have retreated, and were down 17.2% at $24.92 at midday on Thursday. The new hybrid sales plan is just another challenge and the luxury carmaker is already talking to dealers. U.S. dealers said there are too many unanswered questions, including how VinFast will distribute parts needed to make repairs. Several dealers said VinFast may need to offer sweetened profit margins to dealers to account for the added risk.

STOCKHOLM, July 20 (Reuters) - Sweden-based automaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) reported a 54% fall in second-quarter operating earnings on Thursday as the year-ago period's profit was boosted by a one-off gain, and it forecast healthy demand for its vehicles despite pricing pressures. Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's Geely Holding (GEELY.UL), said earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) fell to 5.0 billion Swedish crowns ($488.62 million) from a year-ago 10.8 billion. Volvo said its sales performance was driven by improved production output and that it expected supply and demand to continue to normalise in the wider markets. The company added that the normalisation would bring some additional pricing pressures, but that demand for its cars were expected to be healthy despite high interest rates squeezing its customers and overall market. Volvo reiterated its guidance of solid double-digit growth in retail sales for the full year.

Several car companies say their EVs will be built with the Tesla charging standard starting in 2025. Otherwise, buying an EV other than Tesla now means its charging tech will soon be in the minority. It's supposed to be a huge advantage to non-Tesla car companies that they're switching to Tesla's charging tech. With automakers, charging providers, and more moving to Tesla's tech, CCS will be far less popular in the coming years. The EV buyers in five to 10 years will be buying tech that's more advanced and stabilized.

June 29 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) is in talks with Tesla (TSLA.O) to adopt its North American Charging Standard (NACS), joining a slew of automakers and charging equipment makers that are choosing the technology. "Volkswagen Group and its brands are currently evaluating the implementation of the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its North American customers," the German automaker said. Electrify America, its EV charging network unit, has more than more than 850 charging stations with about 4,000 chargers in the United States and Canada. Tesla, meanwhile, has expanded beyond its connectors to include CCS at some of its U.S. charging stations as the Biden administration seeks to provide billions in subsidies to expand charging networks. The EV maker's Superchargers account for about 60% of the total number of fast chargers in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

June 29 (Reuters) - Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker Polestar said on Thursday it has signed an agreement with Tesla (TSLA.O) to adopt the EV maker's Supercharger network in the United States and Canada. Starting 2025, new Polestar vehicles sold in North America will be equipped with Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port by default, the company said. The deal comes days after Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) said all its electric vehicles (EVs) will have access to Tesla's Supercharger network in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Tesla's Superchargers account for about 60% of the total number of fast chargers available in the United States, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. His two-year-old boy, Thomas, asked to ride in the “big boy seat,” the child safety seat his older brother usually rode in, the one right behind the driver’s seat. Thomas died strapped into his safety seat, as his small body was simply overcome by the heat. Cestia’s truck had a rear seat reminder but, he said, he somehow didn’t notice it when he got to work. He bought his daughter a child safety seat with a heat sensor on the buckle that alerts him if she’s buckled in and it’s getting too hot. And he also listens for the rear seat reminder and habitually checks the backseat.

Polestar owners in North America will have access to Tesla's charging network starting next year. New Polestar vehicles sold in North America will come standard with the Tesla-designed North American Charging Standard, or NACS, plug starting in 2025. Most non-Tesla EVs and charging stations in North America use a plug design called CCS, which stands for Combined Charging System. Tesla EVs can use CCS chargers with an adapter, but currently only Tesla EVs can use Tesla chargers. Tesla's plug design was proprietary until November, when the company published the technical details of its system and made it available to other automakers and makers of EV chargers.

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - Two U.S. senators wrote seven major automakers on Friday urging them not to remove AM radio from new vehicles. "Preserving AM radio not only aligns with the growing recognition of its significance but also demonstrates a commitment to public safety and meeting consumer expectations," the senators wrote. Markey said last month the seven automakers had opted to remove AM broadcast radio from their electric vehicles. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a trade group representing major automakers, said, "mandating AM radios in all vehicles is unnecessary. Automakers pointed to an existing system that distributes warnings across AM, FM, internet-based or satellite radio, and over cellular networks.

June 19 (Reuters) - Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker Polestar said on Monday it had formed a joint venture with Xingji Meizu to build an operating system for Polestar cars sold in China that will offer the latest smart technologies in its vehicles. The venture represents a further push by the Geely group (GEELY.UL) to adapt cars specifically for Chinese consumers. The Swedish group said it would own 49% of the JV and Xingji Meizu 51%, providing $98 million and $102 million in funding respectively. Xingji Meizu has grown over the last decade in its attempt to become a Chinese rival to Android, but holds a marginal market share. Traditional carmakers have come under pressure from Chinese EV makers offering lower prices and smart consumer-facing technologies.

Why are other automakers chasing Tesla's 'Gigacasting'?

Here's a look at Gigacasting and how the innovation is forcing automakers to scramble to match Tesla:WHAT IS GIGACASTING? The Giga Press is an aluminium die-casting machine adopted by Tesla at its factories in the U.S., China and Germany. The house-sized machines are able to produce aluminium parts far bigger than anything used before in auto manufacturing. Toyota said it expected that using aluminium die-casting would eliminate dozens of sheet metal parts from assembly and reduce waste. The global aluminium die-casting market was worth almost $73 billion last year and is projected to top $126 billion by 2032, showed an AlixPartners analysis.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are making a push into Europe and could take market share away from established U.S. and local brands, according to Bernstein. European brands have already seceded 20% of market share to Japanese and South Korean carmakers over the past two decades, according to IHS. Using what it described as conservative estimates, Bernstein predicted that Chinese automakers will hold less than 5% market share by 2030. In an accelerated scenario, where both Tesla and Chinese brands capture significant market share, incumbents could lose up to 20%," the bank's analysts wrote. Roeska noted that despite the fact that Chinese-owned European brands such as MG, Volvo, and Polestar currently account for 8% of the region's EV market, long-term dominance can only be sustainable through local production.

As legacy automakers increasingly ramp production of all-electric vehicles, cushioned by the profits of gas-powered models, a handful of EV startups are scrambling to conserve cash and stay in the mix. It also means the amount of cash Fisker had left as of the end of March, $652.5 million, isn't yet cause for alarm. Still, Fisker cut its production guidance for 2023 to between 32,000 vehicles and 36,000 vehicles, from 42,400 in its original plan. Or as Evercore ISI analyst Doug Dutton wrote before Fisker's earnings report, "Fisker is beginning to turn into a story of binary and 'show me' outcomes." May 18 (Reuters) - Aston Martin's (AML.L) stock popped nearly 22% on Thursday, after the luxury carmaker announced a 234 million pound investment by China's Geely (0715.HK), that will see the automotive firm become its third-largest shareholder. Geely will acquire about 42 million ordinary shares from Chairman Lawrence Stroll's Yew Tree, which is currently the Aston Martin's largest stakeholder, at 335 pence apiece and subscribe for another 28 million shares at the same price. Aston Martin shares, which closed at 231.2 pence on Wednesday, were trading up to 279.4 pence at 0727 GMT. "Our decision to increase our shareholding in Aston Martin reflects our confidence in the company's growth prospects, its technologies and its management team," said Geely Chairman Eric Li. The investment gives Geely a 17% stake in the company and entitles it to one board seat, behind number two shareholder Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).
