Business: Sanwa Holdings is a Japan-based company mainly engaged in the manufacture and sale of building and commercial facility construction materials, as well as the provision of maintenance and renovation services. Activist Commentary: ValueAct has been a premier corporate governance investor for over 20 years. Ahead of any shareholder value creation, ValueAct will likely call for increased shareholder returns in the form of buybacks to capitalize on the Sanwa's relatively low valuation. ValueAct is likely to continue as an active shareholder while Sanwa continues to do what it's been doing, just on a faster timetable. As an engaged investor, ValueAct has historically closed the gap between "good" and "great" by supporting management in executing its plan.

A long road It's been a long and winding road for Waymo since its inception in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. The robotaxi service now has about 700 autonomous vehicles on the road across its markets. That changed about a year ago , when Uber added Waymo vehicles to its app. In February, Waymo recalled 444 of its vehicles after two Waymo vehicles hit a towed pickup truck in Phoenix. The foundation of Dow's work was based on the analysis of price trends, comparing swing highs and swing lows to define and track the trends over time. An initial look at the chart of Microsoft (MSFT) may suggest a consistent uptrend of higher highs and higher lows. And while this short-term uptrend is a valid observation, this also means Microsoft may be forming the dreaded "bear flag" pattern, which often precedes a major downdraft. A bear flag pattern occurs when you have an initial downtrend, in this case, the drop from $470 to $385 from early July to early August of this year. If MSFT would drop below $410 in the coming weeks, that would complete the bear flag pattern, and would also push the price back below the 200-day moving average.

In results published Tuesday, Klarna said that it made an adjusted operating profit of 673 million Swedish krona ($66.1 million) in the six months through June 2024, up from a loss of 456 million krona in the same period a year ago. On a net income basis, Klarna reported a 333 million Swedish krona loss. "Groundbreaking TV talk show journalist Phil Donahue died Sunday night at home surrounded by his wife of 44 years Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, grandchildren and his beloved golden retriever Charlie," said a statement from his family. At his peak, his nationally syndicated "The Phil Donahue Show" — later renamed to "Donahue" — was a ratings hit and precursor to similar shows by hosts Montel Williams and Jerry Springer. "His show debuted nationally, and the whole country came to know his personal brand of issue-driven straight talk," Winfrey said in 2002. "If there had been no Phil Donahue show, there would be no 'Oprah Winfrey' show. At the end of [the] 1980s, Japanese companies accounted for like 51% of the global semiconductor market. So by doing this ... one thing undercut Japanese semiconductor chip makers' competitiveness in the global market. Another thing [is] that [it] forced open [the] Japanese semiconductor market to foreign players, and this creates opportunity for the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan. And Japanese companies are trying to both develop their own capacity but also attract phone companies to establish fabs there. So by collaborating with international companies, Japanese companies can leverage their existing technology and manufacturing techniques to expand their global share as well.
