Editor’s Note: Mijal Bitton, PhD, is the spiritual leader of the Downtown Minyan in New York City and a sociologist of American Jews. I have heard from many young Jews around America newly awakened to their Judaism. These young Jews have different backgrounds and political views, but they share the life-altering experience of deep disillusionment with previous professional or social homes. Young American Jews today are realizing that they, too, can be made to feel unwanted in their own homes. But for most of us American Jews, Zionism is the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination in their historical homeland.

Mine started at the core of an Orthodox South Indian Christian family in Nigeria, West Africa, where I was born and raised. Being gay can be perceived as very shameful and devastating to an Indian family — regardless of how incredibly accomplished you might be. Silently, even today, most Indian parents would be thrilled if their kids became doctors —it’s estimated that India is the biggest source country for doctors in the US. CNN —Same-sex sexual behavior has been observed in more than 1,500 animal species, but a new study has found that it is massively underreported by researchers. Observations of this same-sex behavior in animals, such as sexual mounting and genital touching, date back to the 1700s and 1800s. In a study published Thursday in the journal PLOSOne, a team of researchers at the University of Toronto, Northwestern University and the University of Warsaw found that experts who study animal behavior are underreporting and rarely publishing their observations of same-sex sexual behavior. The study surveyed 65 experts and found that 77% of them observed same-sex sexual behaviors in the species they studied. Davis added that there have been other obstacles that get in the way of documenting same-sex behaviors among animals.

CNN —An amateur paleontologist has discovered a new species of pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs around 100 million years ago. Kevin Petersen, an avocado farmer and curator of the Kronosaurus Korner fossil museum in northwest Queensland, Australia, unearthed a number of fossilized bones in western Queensland in 2021. Fewer than 25 sets of pterosaur remains belonging to four species have been found in Australia since the 1980s, while more than 100 sets have been found in Brazil and Argentina. In finding Haliskia, Petersen found the most complete specimen of any pterosaur discovered in Australia to this day, Pentland said in the statement, praising Petersen for his “careful preparation” of the remains. “I’m thrilled that my discovery is a new species, as my passion lies in helping shape our modern knowledge of prehistoric species,” he said in the statement.

If you need to tackle an improbable challenge, the right mindset — "a special kind of optimism" — can help, according to Moderna co-founder and chairman Noubar Afeyan. Specifically, Afeyan — who has an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion, according to Forbes — said that "extraordinary change agents" take three actions to achieve what seems impossible:They imagine. Imagination plays a crucial role "in accomplishing impossible missions," Afeyan said: You typically need to think creatively to come up with new, original ideas. But ask yourself one central question: Why do we expect extraordinary results from reasonable people doing reasonable things?" "You need to leave your comfort zone, to think in new ways, to acclimate to the unfamiliar and embrace uncertainty."

He said it is “rare” that tiger sharks throw up their food, although they can when stressed. A different shark that the team caught and tagged also made a “surprising” regurgitation, throwing up half a dugong, according to the release. Tiger sharks have gluttonous appetites, a habit of scavenging and are reputed for man-eating. Tiger sharks are found in warm oceans worldwide.

Researchers studying ancient Neanderthal DNA found traces of three viruses that cause colds, cold sores, genital warts, and cancer. And ancient humans might have been the ones who started spreading these bugs, according to the scientists who recently published their work in the peer-reviewed journal "Viruses." This isn't the first time researchers have found inert (no longer infectious) ancient human viruses. That means tools used to study ancient human DNA might not work for viruses, Sally Wasef, a paleogenetics researcher at Queensland University of Technology, told New Scientist. Massilani also had some concerns with how the researchers were interpreting the ancient DNA.

For over a decade, companies around the world have attempted to create smart contact lenses, but they never got down to incorporating electronic components to make a safe battery. LEE SEOK WOO: So, when I decided to work on contact lenses and the power supply to the smart contact lens, I was concerned about the safety because the lithium-ion battery has the issue of the explosion or catching fire. Unlike traditional contact lenses, smart contacts have the potential to do more than just correcting the users' eyesight. So, it might be hard to implant all the devices into one smart contact lens. And of course, the technology needs to be patented first before these smart contact lenses become a reality.

Making changes to our body hair is a near-constant element of stylistic transformation that is central to our self-presentation and expressions of individuality. Why then does the perception of armpit hair remain a constant — seen by many as so primally disgusting? When I talk about armpit hair, I’m talking mostly about women’s armpit hair. Corrin’s recent cover look has brought out more vitriol — this time, with the focus on their armpit hair. Corrin’s armpit hair was visible, but their gender preference was virtually erased.

The government on Monday announced it would open a U.S. counterpart to its AI safety summit, a state-backed body focused on testing advanced AI systems to ensure they're safe, in San Francisco this summer. The U.S. iteration of the AI Safety Institute will aim to recruit a team of technical staff headed up by a research director. In a statement, U.K. Technology Minister Michelle Donelan said the AI Safety Summit's U.S. rollout "represents British leadership in AI in action." The AI Safety Institute was established in November 2023 during the AI Safety Summit, a global event held in England's Bletchley Park, the home of World War II code breakers, that sought to boost cross-border cooperation on AI safety. The government said that, since the AI Safety Institute was established in November, it's made progress in evaluating frontier AI models from some of the industry's leading players.

The question for some of us is, why some people want to keep working decades beyond retirement age? CNN Opinion editor Stephanie Griffith asked seven people who are past the conventional retirement age why they are still at the job and got as many responses as there were respondents. They continue to work happily and productively, and were happy to explain to us how and why they do it. Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. That may be the secret of working well past the time society tells us we’re supposed to retire.

But the bills mentioned by policymakers at a congressional hearing last month to address the problem — specifically, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Protecting Kids on Social Media Act — may do more harm than good. Both KOSA and the Protecting Kids on Social Media Act also propose parental monitoring tools to help guardians observe their children’s online activities. After all, we are so used to seeing older men playing action heroes with all the verve and pep of younger men. The original “Speed,” which was directed by Jan de Bont, came out in 1994 and grossed about $350 million worldwide. Let’s pretend “Speed 2: Cruise Control” (1997) never happened — the movie was a flop, and Reeves wasn’t even in it. Older female actors in action roles often feel disposable and replaceable. But there’s something satisfying about seeing familiar characters age in exciting ways — and about seeing an older woman kick ass.
