Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.

A Republican congressman slammed Meta on Thursday over what the lawmaker called an inadequate response to concerns about illicit drug advertisements on Facebook and Instagram. "Meta's response not only ignores most of the questions posed in our letter, but also refuses to acknowledge that these illicit drug ads were approved and monetized by Meta and allowed to run on their platforms," Walberg said in a statement. In its letter to lawmakers, Meta Vice President of Global Legal Strategy Rachel Lieber said that the company shares lawmakers' concerns "about the public safety and health threat caused by the opioid epidemic." Meta is "profiting from proving paid amplification to drug trafficking sites that would not have the reach without Meta's advertising platforms." Read Meta's letter to lawmakers below:

Not everyone who attempts suicide has a mental health conditionOne of many common myths about suicide is that only people with mental health conditions have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. Describing a suicide attempt as “successful” is also problematic, as taking one’s life is not a positive achievement. “Failed suicide attempt” can suggest that surviving isn’t the best outcome or that there’s something lacking in the character or willpower of the attempter. Given these factors, when referring to suicide, appropriate language includes “died by suicide,” “fatal suicide attempt,” “killed herself” or “took his own life,” experts said. Acceptable shorthand ways to communicate not dying from an attempt include “nonfatal suicide attempt” or simply “suicide attempt.”Using more compassionate language to discuss suicide can also improve empathy and strategies for reducing suicide risk, experts said.

Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance on Sunday defended his 2021 comments about allocating more votes to people with children, saying they were a “thought experiment.”In a widely circulated video clip from a 2021 speech he gave to a conservative organization called the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Vance suggested giving more votes to people with children than to people who have none. “Let’s give votes to all children in this country, but let’s give control over those votes to the parents of those children,” Vance said in his 2021 speech. “And I said, well, if we’re going to give the rights to the children, then we should actually just allow the parents to cast those votes. She said her husband’s “quip” was an effort to bring attention to U.S. policies that fall short of providing the support families need. What is it about our leadership and the way that they think about the world that makes it so hard sometimes for parents?’” she added.

Dutton, who has dealt with sellers wanting out, says even property owners trying to offload the problem can lose money in the process. This way, if one unit loses money for whatever reason, the other units will continue to cash flow. In terms of considerations when thinking about the location of an investment property, Dutton noted that one of the biggest expenses buyers often miss, especially in places like South Florida, is property taxes. Another tax mistake buyers make is checking the current property tax and assuming they will pay the same amount.

Fed Will Scour Jobs Report for Signs of Weakness

Federal Reserve officials held off on cutting interest rates this week because they want slightly more data to feel confident that inflation is truly coming under control. But while that approach is cautious when it comes to price increases, it could prove to be risky when it comes to the labor market. High Fed interest rates help to cool inflation by slowing demand in the economy. And as inflation comes down, Fed policymakers are increasingly attuned to the risk that they might overdo it, tipping the economy into a severe enough slowdown that it pushes unemployment higher and leaves Americans out of work. Those concerns were not enough to prod central bankers to cut interest rates at their meeting this week.

For now, Fed officials think the ongoing slowdown in hiring and a recent tick up in joblessness suggest the labor market is returning to normal after a few years of booming hiring. But while that approach is cautious when it comes to price increases, it could prove to be risky when it comes to the labor market. But that chain reaction can come at a serious cost to the job market. For now, Fed officials think that the ongoing slowdown in hiring and a recent tick up in joblessness signal that labor market conditions are returning to normal after a few years of booming hiring. Fed rate moves take time to work, so if the central bank only starts to cut borrowing costs when the job market is showing serious signs of strain, it could be moving too late.

But addressing 14 risk factors over the course of one’s life — starting in childhood — could prevent or delay nearly half of cases, according to a large report by 27 dementia experts. “The progress in preventing and treating dementia is accelerating.”The initial 12 risk factors were linked with 40% of cases, but the new report suggests addressing the 14 risk factors could help eliminate or delay 45% of dementia cases, said Livingston, a professor of psychiatry of older people at University College London. This “critical” update calls attention to two risk factors that preventive neurologist Dr. Richard Issacson says his clinical practice has been evaluating for over a decade. But other research has provided theories on the link between these vulnerabilities and dementia risk.

Given the many ways lower rates can affect your finances, here are some things to consider when deciding what steps to take in response. Here’s how lower rates may affect key areas of your financial life, along with tips on what to do about it. If that proves difficult to get, see if you can transfer your balance to a credit card from a credit union or local bank that offers lower rates than the biggest banks. I want to retire early, so I asked a financial planner what mistakes I should watch out for. In an effort to get on track, I chatted with certified public accountant and certified financial planner Ryan Nelson about the most common mistakes people make when they attempt to retire early. He advised people to proactively calculate the cost of health insurance during early retirement before reaching Medicare age, which is currently 65. "Look into private marketplace options, whether individual health insurance plans, health sharing ministries, or short-term health insurance plans to see how much these could cost." Not maximizing health savings account contributionsFor those planning to retire early, Nelson also recommend that they maximize their health savings account contributions.
