CNN —If Vladimir Putin was watching the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night, he would have found one more reason to dig in for a long war of attrition in Ukraine. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy acted as Trump’s stand-in, mining a deep seam of skepticism over the war among GOP grassroots voters. Chris Christie, who recently returned from Ukraine, warned: “This is the Vladimir Putin, who Donald Trump called brilliant and a genius. The debate underscored one of the tragedies of the war for Ukraine. They can’t control what Putin does, which means their fate will also be on the ballot in the US in 2024.

Here are six takeaways from the first 2024 Republican presidential primary debate:Taking shots at RamaswamyWith Trump absent from Wednesday’s debate, the the early target of most of the debate participants was not DeSantis or South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott or any candidate who has ever held elected office before. DeSantis clarified: “Well, statewide.” Asked if he would support a federal six-week abortion ban, DeSantis talked about his electoral victory in Florida. And no one clearly stated they would sign a six-week federal abortion ban – even if they’d approved such laws as governors. At one end of the spectrum stood Haley, who sparred with Pence over the possibility of passing a federal ban. Ahead of the debate, Republican strategists argued that this was the approach Scott wanted to take because it’s his authentic self.

But Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. and other surrogates planned to travel to Milwaukee, where they would have had opportunities to weigh in on national broadcasts before and after the debate in the spin room. Ahead of the debate, some candidates are offering previews of their lines of attack – including criticizing Trump for choosing not to participate. “Every one of us who have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage willing to square off and answer those tough questions,” Pence said. Former Vice President Mike Pence said on Sunday that he knew of no widespread declassification of documents by President Donald J. Trump when they were in the White House together, refuting one of the former president’s main defenses against charges of endangering national security. But his vice president became the latest former Trump administration official to say that he had heard of no such edict. “I was never made aware of any broad-based effort to declassify documents,” Mr. Pence said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “There is a process that the White House goes through to declassify materials,” Mr. Pence added. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t occur; it’s just not something that I ever heard about.”

I’m aware of that occurring on several occasions over the course of our four years. But I don’t have any knowledge of any broad-based directive from the president,” Pence told ABC News Sunday. When Davis asked Karen Pence about her drawing the curtains in the ceremonial office, the former second lady attributed it to "conditioning" from being in the public eye. "I think once you become, you know, second lady, life changed a lot for us," she said.

The indictment describes how Trump and his lawyers pressured Pence to overturn Joe Biden's victory by refusing to certify the results in the Senate on Jan. 6, 2021. Pence told CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday that if he is ultimately asked to testify, he will follow the law. Lauro added that Trump and his lawyers asked Pence to "pause the voting" to allow states time to audit votes, in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday. "Frankly, the day before January 6, if memory serves, they came back — his lawyers did — and said, 'We want you to reject votes' outright," Pence said. And it's what no vice president in American history had ever done before, and frankly what no vice president or any one person in Washington should ever do again," he added.

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Former Republican Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday did not rule out being a prosecution witness if his ex-boss Donald Trump goes to trial on charges of orchestrating a criminal conspiracy to try to reverse his defeat in the 2020 presidential election. Some of the Trump supporters who rioted at the U.S. Capitol chanted "Hang Mike Pence!" He denied he called him "too honest", described him as "delusional", and called him "'Liddle' Mike Pence". Pence's presidential campaign has failed to take off so far, and he even risks not making the first Republican presidential debate later this month because of a lack of donors. Pence took on his former boss more forcefully last week, accusing him of surrounding himself with "crackpot" lawyers after his 2020 defeat.

Trump supporters confronted Mike Pence at a presidential campaign event, calling him a "traitor." Trump just pleaded not guilty in the 2020 election case, his third arraignment of the year. Pence, lagging behind in GOP polls, still tried to win over the MAGA supporters during the event. Pence was met by a group of about 10 Trump supporters armed with signs and flags as he arrived at a town hall in Londonderry, New Hampshire, NBC News reported. Video of the incident showed a handful of people wearing Trump and MAGA merchandise yelling at Pence in a parking lot.

Mr. Trump was the nation’s essential man, Mr. Pence long attested, and more than that, “a good man.” (He does not use that adjective anymore.) Asked in the interview if he saw himself as an example to other Republicans who remain devoted to the former president, Mr. Pence did not say no. “He doesn’t really have a unique selling proposition,” said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, who has both praised Mr. Pence for what he did on Jan. 6 and been accused of helping to perpetuate Mr. Trump’s election lies. “In terms of John F. Kennedy’s ‘Profiles in Courage,’ I think that Pence is a very admirable person. “Campaigns should be about something more important than the candidate’s election,” he said.

Former Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday said that former President Donald J. Trump and his advisers had tried to get him “essentially to overturn the election” and that the American people needed to know it. The remarks, made in an interview with Fox News, are some of Mr. Pence’s most pointed to date about what he experienced in the weeks leading up to Jan. 6, 2021, when he presided over the congressional certification of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory. And they came as Mr. Pence, who is trailing his former boss, the G.O.P. front-runner, in the Republican primary, has faced a slog in his attempt to get enough small-donor donations to qualify for the first Republican debate on Aug. 23. An adviser to Mr. Pence said he got more than 7,000 donations on Wednesday, the day after Mr. Trump’s indictment on charges of conspiring to overthrow the 2020 election.

Pence's notes could potentially be used to show Trump knew he had lost the election. The indictment cites Pence's "contemporaneous notes" several times as it details conversations between Trump and his vice president after the 2020 election and before the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Experts say bias in the appraisal process is the reason for the gap, but change may be coming. That's not surprising, considering 95% of appraisers in Philadelphia — a majority nonwhite city — are white, a report by the Philadelphia Home Appraisal Bias Task Force found. "It's like a flight simulator for appraisers," Swinney said. Right now, Pennsylvania is among the 42 states that have signaled PAREA is an acceptable model for training appraisers.
