Friday marks what would have been the 100th birthday of James Baldwin, the author of incandescent masterpieces including “The Fire Next Time,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain" and “Giovanni’s Room.”Life took him from a boyhood as the eldest son of a preacher in Harlem to the American South during the Civil Rights Movement. He also spent years in Istanbul, Paris and the South of France, where he died in 1987 at age 63. A man who wrote fiercely about racial discrimination in the United States and openly about gay people, he became a profoundly influential figure, widely known for his novels, plays and essays, and as a spokesman for the civil rights movement. “He was fearless,” Paula Whaley, one of his sisters, said in an interview. “He would say, ‘You have to walk straight into it.’”

Whether they’re driving or flying, people traveling for the upcoming holiday weekend are expected to break records in what is already one of the busiest years yet for travel. The Fourth of July holiday usually marks the peak for summer travel, and this summer is already showing signs of surpassing the past two record-setting summers. Travel records keep getting broken. With people itching to get away in the wake of coronavirus shutdowns, air travel in recent years has taken off. Travel volumes are still growing, despite higher costs and a more volatile industry, according to Paula Twidale, the senior vice president of travel at AAA.

CNN —Donald Trump will not be sentenced on his business fraud conviction until September, a New York judge ruled Tuesday in the wake of Monday’s Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a lengthy and strongly worded dissent in which she excoriated the court for its decision. The chief justice said the trial court will have to assess what of Trump’s alleged conduct is immunized under the new test handed down by the high court, and the opinion said that additional briefing will be needed for the trial court to do so. Justice Amy Coney Barrett expressed frustration with how the court was sending the case back down for more proceedings. She suggested that because Trump’s wholesale challenge to the indictment had failed, at least some of the case could go forward. In that sense, if Smith narrowed his indictment, lower courts could hear the Trump trial this year.

Charges against Trump not likely affectedThe people who pushed their way into the Capitol aren’t the only ones who are facing the obstruction charge.
