Food addiction: What it is and how to overcome it
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Known as food addiction, the condition isn’t limited to older adults — previous food addiction data had primarily centered around young- to middle-age adults up to around 50, said Ashley Gearhardt, lead author of the latest research by Michigan Medicine and a pioneer in the field of food addiction studies. But the type of treatment that would be offered for food addiction would be very different, because not everyone who reports having food addiction is binging, and the underlying neurology of food addiction and binge eating disorder aren’t the same. Food hijacking the brainThe criteria defining food addiction revolve specifically around highly processed food, instead of all food, because of how the brain responds to its consumption, experts said. Living with food addictionNot everyone who eats highly processed food develops an addictive relationship to it. “So, I don’t have science to say, ‘Here is the best treatment for this addiction,’ which is unfortunate.”Undergoing therapy can help with food addiction.

Golfers had chosen sides in a sport known for individualism, fueling an unfamiliar team-against-team tension. Twelve months later, and days after the seismic news of the American and European tours forming a partnership with LIV Golf, the disruption at the 2022 U.S. Open now seems like an almost inconsequential diversion. Just ask Matt Fitzpatrick, who won that tournament in Brookline, Mass., for his first victory at a major tournament win and also on the PGA Tour. “I seem to remember last year just thinking about the tournament, just the U.S. Open,” Fitzpatrick said on Monday. “It was easier for me to mentally focus on that and be in a better place than obviously all this confusion that’s going on this week.

"I just don't know what's going on. I don't think anyone knows what's going on. "Even though I guess it is confusing, it's pretty clear that nobody knows what's going on apart from about four people in the world." The U.S. Open begins on Thursday at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Prosecutors also tried to determine if Mr. Trump had directed someone to move the documents or sought to conceal some of them at the resort after the Justice Department issued a subpoena for their return. “When a prosecutor thinks he has a strong case, the objective becomes protecting the legal case by taking legal issues off the table,” Mr. Fitzpatrick said. (Mr. Trump received 4 percent of the vote in the District of Columbia in the presidential election of 2016, and 5 percent in 2020.) Prosecutors in Miami could face a more skeptical jury because of Mr. Trump’s popularity in that state. Juries in Washington have swiftly convicted rioters egged on by Mr. Trump in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The Texas Legislature impeached Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton on Saturday. Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton sits in the Senate Chamber at the Texas Capitol in Austin, Texas, on May 29, 2023. But the threshold for conviction in the Senate trial is higher, requiring a two-thirds majority of its 31 members. If that happens, Ken Paxton would be permanently barred from holding office in Texas. He had suggested before the House impeachment vote that all 31 senators would vote in the trial.

NASA wants your help to identify UFOs and UAPs. NASA and federal officials said "imagery from smartphones is of limited value" to pin down UFOs. NASA's independent task force studying UAPs has been active since September 2022. NASA and the AARO said researchers need better, more reliable data to help categorize and identify what's behind strange sightings when they're reported in the sky. During the meeting, Kirkpatrick also said the AARO is researching how AI could help in studying, reporting, and identifying UFOs

CNN —A team of 16 experts and scientists assembled by NASA aims to publish its first report on unidentified anomalous phenomena, also known as unidentified flying objects, or UFOS, by midsummer. “We’re trying to assess whether those phenomena pose any risks to safety and we’re doing it using science,” Evans added. Unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAP, “are events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena from a scientific perspective,” according to NASA. Instead, the team’s approach has been outlining how to evaluate and study unidentified anomalous phenomena using data and technology. But since being announced in June 2022, members of the independent study team have faced online harassment.

CNN —Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reaffirmed June 1 as the “hard deadline” for the US to raise the debt ceiling or risk defaulting on its obligations. So I think that that’s a hard deadline,” Yellen said during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”Yellen’s warning came hours after President Joe Biden delivered a grim assessment on the state of negotiations during his remaining hours in Japan. Reflecting that shift tone, the treasury secretary reiterated that there will be some bills that go unpaid, if the debt ceiling isn’t raised. “There will be hard choices to make if the debt ceiling isn’t raised,” she said. “My devout hope is that Congress will raise the debt ceiling,” she said.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban Congress members from trading individual stocks. Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi has long been scrutinized for his extensive history of trading stocks. The Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act would prohibit Congress members and their spouses and any dependents from trading individual stocks. The bill would prevent Congressional lawmakers and their spouses and dependents from trading individual stocks. Instead of owning individual stocks, Congress members would be allowed to buy and sell baskets of stocks via mutual funds or ETFs, as well as Treasury securities.
Experts at the conference named time-to-money, faster payments processing leading to faster fraud, and political hurdles that stunt innovation as the biggest challenges for payments. But with faster payments comes faster fraud, Soups Ranjan, cofounder and CEO of Sardine, said. Still, the threat of faster fraud "shouldn't change why we lean into faster payments," Kirkpatrick added. "Because this problem will exist whether we have faster payments or we don't." "We don't have anything close to that in the US," Kirkpatrick added.
CNN —The Texas Senate passed a bill Thursday requiring each public school classroom to display a copy of the Ten Commandments, a move that drew backlash from civil liberty advocates who say lawmakers should not dictate what religious materials students are exposed to. The legislation, which passed the state Senate on a 17-12 vote, will now head to the state’s House of Representatives. “This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 school year,” the bill reads. Senate Bill 1396 also passed with a 17-12 vote. “Parents should be able to decide what religious materials their child should learn, not the (Texas legislature),” the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas said in a statement.
The triumphant pair on Sunday will also receive a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. The Fitzpatrick brothers will pair together at the Zurich Classic. The golf world is very different from when I started to when he’s playing now so he’s going to focus on the Challenge Tour probably, he’s excited for that. Yet Fitzpatrick – dubbed the hardest-working golfer on the PGA Tour – has no intention of accepting his place in the food chain. “I’m constantly looking at ways to improve and get better, and that’s what’s really important is to keep pushing myself and try and catch them up.”
CNN —The US government is tracking more than 650 potential cases of so-called “unidentified aerial phenomenon,” commonly known as UFOs, according to the director of the office created last year to focus on the sightings. He played video from two of cases that had been declassified, one that had been resolved and the other unresolved. Kirkpatrick explained that this case was unresolved because there was no other evidence beyond the video. He said that in a small number of cases, he has concerns the episodes could be evidence of potential technological advancements. Those cases, he said, are handed off to the intelligence community to investigate further.
WASHINGTON, March 27 (Reuters) - A group of lawmakers on Wednesday will make a new push for legislation to bar passengers fined or convicted of serious physical violence from commercial flights after a series of recent high-profile incidents. Senator Jack Reed and Representative Eric Swalwell, both Democrats, and Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick said Monday they plan to reintroduce the "Protection from Abusive Passengers Act." Despite the end of the airplane mask mandate in April 2022, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigated 831 unruly passenger incidents in 2022, up from 146 in 2019, but down from 1,099 in 2021, the lawmakers noted. Trump's first official rally for his 2024 presidential bid kicked off on Saturday in Waco, Texas. Some have been alarmed by the symbolic link between Trump and a deadly cult siege 30 years ago. Dan Patrick told rallygoers he was responsible for the location. "I picked Waco," the MAGA-aligned Texas lieutenant governor told rallygoers awaiting Donald Trump's arrival on Saturday night. Trump campaign staff pushed on any symbolic link, touting instead that recent polling shows central Texas strongly supports Trump.

On Friday, a US court ruled against FAA having to establish minimum seat sizes and spacing for safety, Reuters reports. On Friday, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that advocacy group FlyersRights.org couldn't force the FAA to adopt seating dimension rules. That is why some passengers pay for wider seats and extra legroom," Walker wrote. There needs to be a minimum size established, and it needs to be larger than the current sizing," commenter Epiphany Pizor wrote. In 2018, Congress passed the FAA Reauthorization Act, directing the agency to issue seat dimension rules regarding passenger safety.
Circuit Court of Appeals said an advocacy group, FlyersRights.org, had no right to force the FAA to adopt seating rules because it was not "clear and indisputable" that tight seating, while uncomfortable, was also dangerous. Congress had in 2018 given the FAA one year to establish minimum seating dimensions including pitch, the distance between seatbacks, that were "necessary" for passenger safety. "To be sure, many airline seats are uncomfortably small. "But it is not 'clear and indisputable' that airline seats have become dangerously small. Circuit Court of Appeals, No.
But Republicans have vilified BlackRock, Vanguard Group and State Street for leading the push on Wall Street to promote clean energy and what GOP lawmakers often title "left-wing social priorities." Still, many Republican lawmakers received money from the very firms their party is criticizing. It was the third election cycle in a row that both lawmakers took donations from the firm's PAC. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo., received $10,000 from BlackRock and a combined $6,500 from Vanguard and State Street in the 2022 cycle. Huizenga's spokesman Brian Patrick said the donations won't affect the lawmaker's position on ESG issues.

The league, whose launch was announced last August, is being billed as a first-of-its-kind experience for golf as each two-hour event will be held on a data-rich, virtual course complete with a tech-infused, short-game complex. Organizers promise a high-energy, greenside fan experience for the short-form version of golf in a coliseum environment with every shot to be shown live on primetime television.
