Like many cities around Britain shaken by anti-immigrant riots over the past week, Hartlepool, a seaside town on the northeast coast, has partly recovered from the devastating waves of industrial decline that began washing over the country in the 1980s. Disposable income is below the national average, and more people are out of the work force, according to the Office for National Statistics. There are fewer active businesses, healthy life expectancy is lower and the crime rate is 89 percent higher. In Britain, as well as throughout Europe and in the United States, economic problems — like stagnant wages, roaring inequality and declining public services — have been linked to the rise of anti-immigrant attitudes. Even though research shows that immigration is an overall plus for most economies, far-right politicians have been able to exploit those frustrations to energize supporters and gain political power.

Financial-services firms risk the wrath of the Securities and Exchange Commission if their employees make campaign contributions to state or local officials such as Walz. Donating to the campaign would violate the regulator's "pay-to-play" rule, which keeps firms from trying to sway politicians for favors such as managing their state's pension fund. Those employees are also required to get permission to donate to the Harris-Walz campaign. It is possible to sidestep the pay-to-play rule by donating to PACs or Super PACs that aren't directly tied to the relevant candidate. "The Pay-to-Play Rule, although well-intentioned, imposes unique, unquantifiable costs on individuals by impeding their ability to participate in the political process."

Tropical Storm Debby, which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane along the Florida coast early Monday, will move across the Southeast on Tuesday at roughly the speed of a human walking. Like Debby, both storms stalled over the region and became reminders that a hurricane’s hazards can persist and intensify for days after it makes landfall. Even small changes in the steering currents could result in Debby shifting and changing where the rain falls. The storm will most likely move slightly offshore, allowing some restrengthening before the storm turns north and moves back inland. Debby will funnel huge amounts of moisture northward and collide with cooler air moving into the region, allowing storms to form.

This meant he judged the ball from Vekic to be in, and chair umpire Jaume Campistol awarded her the point because Gauff’s follow-up shot had gone into the net. Regarding the overruling of line calls, Case 7 is as follows:“If a chair umpire or line umpire calls ‘Out’ and then corrects the call to good, what is the correct decision? “Decision: The chair umpire must decide if the original ‘Out’ call was a hindrance to either player. PARIS — The top American tennis player Coco Gauff is out of the Olympic women’s singles under controversial circumstances after a 6-7, 2-6 defeat to Croatia’s Donna Vekic on Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros. Afterward, Gauff, who was the flagbearer for Team USA alongside LeBron James, said that she “felt that they called it before I hit. Play continued with Gauff down a break and she fought back in the next Vekic service game, but Vekic saved multiple break points, and ultimately cruised to an impressive victory by breaking Gauff again in the final game. Down 5-3 in the first set, Vekic broke Gauff at love to turn the match around. “I can’t say I would have won the match if I would have won that point.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —Coco Gauff looked to be cruising against Donna Vekić in her third-round singles match at the Paris Olympics. The most fraught moment of the match came midway through the second set when Gauff was reduced to tears during a heated exchange with chair umpire Jaume Campistol. A line call on Gauff’s baseline was initially deemed out, but Campistol overruled the decision and handed Vekić a crucial break point. The supervisor also came onto the court and the ensuing debate lasted five minutes, with Gauff wiping tears away from her eyes. The ball was flying a little bit, but after that, I got in rhythm and it was pretty good.”The dispute with the umpire in the second set, Gauff later explained, didn’t alter the result of the match.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —There is a notable absence among Novak Djokovic’s 98 career singles titles, but the Serbian star is hoping to change that over the coming weeks. In the end, Djokovic progressed with ease, potentially setting up a thrilling second-round match against Rafael Nadal. It’s a feat, sometimes described as a career golden slam, only achieved by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams in the women’s game. “Playing in the Olympic Games is very rare for us tennis players,” Djokovic told reporters, ”and of course for anybody, as it comes every four years. The early stages of the match were particularly one-sided, with Djokovic taking the first set with back-to-back aces in just 24 minutes.

The last time a freshly minted Labour government unabashedly campaigned on an ambitious national industrial policy to revive the British economy was 50 years ago, and the results were generally viewed as disastrous. The 1974 program of subsidies, state ownership and power sharing among business, unions and government resulted in strikes that paralyzed the nation. And the government’s goal of picking industrial winners turned into a policy of backing losers like the automaker British Leyland and British Steel Corporation. The current Labour Party has clearly jettisoned that ’70s era legacy. Keir Starmer’s new government, which formally laid out its economic agenda as Parliament opened on Wednesday, is nonetheless embracing the idea that the government must play a key role in driving Britain’s stagnant economy.

Throngs of fans rushed past security at the final match of the Copa América soccer tournament, some of them brazenly climbing tall fences. A few appeared to try to enter the Hard Rock Stadium near Miami through a ceiling vent. Never was there any doubt that Miami, the nation’s most Pan-American city, was the most fitting place to host the final game of the Copa América, a South American soccer tournament that is being held in the United States for only the second time in a century. But even the tournament’s organizers could not script a matchup like the one that will take place on Sunday night between Argentina and Colombia — two countries that, on any given day, would be received like the home team in South Florida. “That stadium is not going to feel like you’re in Miami — or in the U.S., for that matter,” said Juan C. Zapata, who was the first Colombian American elected to the Florida Legislature. “It is a very Miami final.”The tournament, which started on June 20, has lost some of its trademark South American feel being played entirely in the United States, with empty seats at some matches and players complaining about the surfaces of several fields. But the setting of the final may restore some of Copa América’s typical festive energy.

The New Jersey Democratic power broker charged with racketeering by the state attorney general pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he threatened people whose properties he sought to take over and orchestrated tax incentive legislation to benefit organizations he controlled. "My client emphatically states that he is not guilty," Norcross' attorney Michael Critchley told Judge Peter Warshaw. A longtime kingmaker in southern New Jersey, Norcross often wielded influence through back channels.
