New York CNN —Walmart confirmed on Friday that it is not advertising on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk and formerly known as Twitter. “We aren’t advertising on X as we’ve found other platforms to better reach our customers,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement to CNN. A number of prominent brands paused their advertising on X, last month following Musk’s public embrace of an antisemitic conspiracy theory favored by White supremacists. “I don’t want them to advertise,” Musk said at the New York Times DealBook Summit in New York. “If anyone is killing X, it’s Elon Musk – not advertisers,” she said.

New York CNN —Federal consumer safety regulators are pushing ahead in their effort to make baby loungers safer by proposing a major redesign of the products, following 79 deaths connected with their use. Another recommended redesign is for the height of the infant support side cushions to not exceed two inches, again to reduce the risk of entrapment and suffocation. “Infant support cushions have fallen outside of the reach of both voluntary and mandatory safety standards. One of the Yoocaa baby loungers recalled in early November 2023. According to federal safety regulators, more than 80% of the deaths involved babies three-months old and younger.

Gaming subscriptions continue to gain popularity, too. “What’s changed, naturally, is the games that families are playing.”According to ESA, more than 212 million Americans play video games on a regular basis. Rite Aid is closing another 30 stores

New York CNN —Rite Aid is closing another roughly 30 locations across the US in addition to the 100 the bankrupt chain announced last month as part of its restructuring efforts. Rite Aid will have about 2,000 stores remaining when both rounds of closures are complete. Rite Aid is in much worse financial shape than its competitors. Over the past six years, Rite Aid has tallied nearly $3 billion in losses and its stock is down more than 90% for the year. That has forced Rite Aid and its rivals to reduce its physical footprint in recent years.

New York CNN —More people than ever flocked to stores and websites over the Thanksgiving and Black Friday holiday weekend this year, but consumers didn’t quite break the spending record set in recent years. The group said consumers spent $321.41 on average (unadjusted for inflation) on these types of items compared to $325.44 over the same time last year. The Thanksgiving holiday weekend typically marks the start of the year-end gift-buying rush. The NRF’s own projection calls for a slowdown in holiday sales growth this year. And for Cyber Monday, the numbers were even stronger — consumers spent $12.4 billion, a 9.6% increase from 2022.

So are the start-of-the-season deals enticing enough for shoppers or are they holding out in a cat-and-mouse game with retailers? Michael Brown, retail industry leader and partner with management consulting firm Kearney, said the much earlier-than-usual jumpstart to holiday sales this year could be to blame. Shoppers will be holding out for better deals,” he said. Kena Betancur/Getty ImagesTotal holiday sales this year are expected to come in softer compared to last year. He said there were plenty of 25% off Black Friday deals mall-wide and some deeper 40% off promotions for early-bird shoppers.

The day after Thanksgiving historically has marked the start of the holiday shopping rush. This matters because the November-December gift-buying months combined can account for about 20%, or a sizable chunk, of retailers’ sales for the full year. Retailers this year trotted out early Black Friday-like deals weeks ahead of the annual day-after-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza. “It is a lengthier shopping season because retailers were rolling out early Black Friday deals as early as October. Walmart’s first round of early Black Friday deals included a 50-inch TV house brand for $148.

New York CNN —The Federal Reserve likely won’t raise interest rates again during its current tightening cycle, thanks to a cooldown in inflation. Interest rates are at a 22-year high after the Fed last March began its punishing pace of hikes in a bid to tame wayward inflation. Traders are now virtually certain that the Fed will hold rates steady at its December policy meeting and won’t hike again this cycle, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Of course, one month’s data doth not a trend make. Traders are anticipating rate cuts won’t start before next March, and see May as more likely, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

New York CNN —Sephora has drastically changed the way people shop for fragrances in its stores, and it’s blaming store thefts for it. Sephora locked up the fragrances and added more staff specifically tasked with stopping theft. “To minimize the threats of retail theft and to provide our shoppers with the peace of mind during their experience at Sephora, we’ve increased the presence of Sephora loss prevention investigators across all stores. “The ultimate victim of retail crime is 100% the consumer,” said Landon Winkelvoss, co-founder of Nisos, a provider of threat intelligence to companies and organizations. “Sephora freed the products and put them straight into consumers hands so they could touch, swatch and experience the products at their leisure,” she added.

New York CNN —Just a few years ago, Toys R Us was on its way to the retail graveyard after going out of business. Now, it’s coming to America’s biggest mall, just in time for countdown to Christmas. Toys R Us at one point was the leading toy chain in the United States and globally. But Toys R Us’ size – both in global store fleet and massive inventory – eventually contributed to its downfall as the company buckled under billions of dollars of debt. New York CNN —Walmart announced Tuesday that it is making changes to create a calmer shopping experience, at least for a few hours every day in all of its US stores. Set to be implemented on Nov. 10, the changes include setting in-store TV walls to a static image, turning off the radio, and lowering the store lights. The retailer told CNN that the changes, for now, will roll out only at its Walmart locations and not at its Sam’s Club warehouse locations. Walmart’s rival Target sells an exclusive line of children’s home decor and furnishings that are designed to be sensory-friendly. The move by Victoria’s Secret shows mainstream brands and retailers – and not only niche sellers – catering to differently abled consumers.

But declines in small-cap stocks suggest that worries about the US economy’s health still linger on Wall Street. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks the performance of US small-cap stocks, last Friday touched its lowest level since November 2020 after turning negative for the year earlier in October. Small-cap stocks tend to be an indicator of economic strength, because they generate most of their revenue domestically. Still, Mahajan says that small-cap stocks could be set up for a rally, especially if the economy sees renewed growth next year. The company reported $146.3 million in net income during the quarter, down 50% from the $289.9 million it reported in the same quarter a year ago.
