CNN —The US and Panama have signed an agreement on immigration issues that aims to “close the passage of illegal migrants” through the Darién Gap, the Central American government announced Monday. Panama is home to the Darién Gap, a mountainous rainforest region connecting South and Central America, that has seen an increase in the number of migrants willing to risk their lives and safety to cross it. The 66-mile (106-kilometer) hike through the Darien Gap brings migrants from Colombia to Panama and is a crucial passage for those hoping to reach the United States and Canada. “The Darién must continue to be a great green lung, not only for us but for the entire region. Its biodiversity cannot be put at risk by illicit activities.”Panamanian figures show at least 174,513 migrants crossed the treacherous Darién Gap, from January to June 6 of this year.

CNN —A Panamanian court has acquitted 28 people charged with money laundering in cases linked to the Panama Papers and Operation Car Wash scandals. The Panama Papers were a group of over 11 million leaked documents that were published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in 2016. The papers referenced 12 current or former world leaders, as well as 128 other politicians and public officials. Operation Car Wash was a money laundering investigation into Petrobras, Brazil’s state-run oil company. Those acquitted from the Operation Car Wash case were discharged because the income of money from illicit sources could not be demonstrated, the statement said.

In a striking verdict for a money-laundering case associated with the Panama Papers scandal, a Panamanian judge on Friday acquitted all 28 defendants, among them former employees of the law firm Mossack Fonseca, the source of the leaked documents that set off a worldwide furor in 2016. The verdict came eight years after a partnership of media outlets published an explosive investigation into 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panama-based firm. The leak exposed the offshore banking industry, prompted international tax investigations and brought down heads of state. Among the original 29 defendants were the shuttered firm’s co-founders, Jürgen Mossack, 76, and Ramón Fonseca, who died in May at age 71 while awaiting the verdict. In her 339-page ruling, the judge, Baloísa Marquínez, said that the case against Mr. Fonseca was dropped because of his death.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature reports 35% of all shark species are threatened with extinction. The primary reason is overfishing; shark meat and fins are highly sought. That research has helped expand the number of shark species now regulated by CITES. How you can help sharksOne of the easiest ways to help sharks and all marine life is to try to consume seafood from sustainable sources.

Robert Kirk, a retired jack of many trades, finds himself homeless at the age of 74 after a chain of events that could happen to almost anyone. His landlady in Brooklyn died, the building’s new owner raised the rent and later evicted the tenants, and he could not find another apartment he could afford with his Social Security check. Now his neighbors at a hotel shelter in Brownsville, Brooklyn, include a 69-year-old ambulette driver who lost his job and apartment after a leg injury, a 73-year-old former plasterer from Panama and a 78-year-old retired sushi chef from Japan. They are among the swelling ranks of older people who are homeless in New York City. According to a report released on Thursday, the number of single adults ages 65 and older in the city’s main shelter system more than doubled from 2014 to 2022, growing nearly three times as quickly as the number of younger single adults in shelters.

Stephanie Loomis had hoped that the chaos besieging the global supply chain was subsiding. The multiplying costs of moving freight. Over the last few months, she has watched cargo prices soar as a series of disturbances have roiled the seas. That prompted ships to avoid the waterway, instead moving the long way around Africa, lengthening their journeys by as much as two weeks. CNN en Español —American John Poulos was sentenced on Tuesday to more than 42 years in prison by a Colombian court, after he was found guilty of aggravated femicide in the killing of a young Colombian DJ named Valentina Trespalacios, as well as crimes of concealment, alteration or destruction of evidence. Additionally, the judge prohibited Poulos from approaching or attempting to communicate with Trespalacios’ family for 20 years, and ordered that he be expelled from Colombia once he completes his sentence. In Colombia, femicide — the killing of a woman because of her gender — is considered a more serious crime than homicide. From the beginning, we established that we were facing objectification, an instrumentalization of a woman through various factors, psychological violence, violence of various types, including physical violence,” lawyer Miguel Ángel del Río told Focus Noticias.
