Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll suggested the firm made up to $80 million selling F1 safety cars. The CEO took control of Aston Martin in 2020, but it's failed to recover massive share price losses. Aston Martin's boss suggested the carmaker might have gotten an $80 million boost from its car featuring in Formula One races. That would suggest Aston Martin has taken between $60 million and $80 million worth of sales linked to its safety car. Stroll's son Lance is a driver on his Aston Martin team, alongside two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
A group of mostly Democratic senators pressured Tesla CEO Elon Musk to end the company's use of forced arbitration clauses in employee and customer contracts, in a letter on Monday. Forced arbitration clauses in consumer contracts have similarly obscured important details about Tesla's vehicle safety and business practices from the public, the lawmakers wrote. They asked for the same details about sexual harassment complaints from Tesla workers. However, Tesla makes and sells its cars direct to consumers so its forced arbitration clauses cover more than the norm where auto sales are concerned. Tesla uses arbitration clauses as a tactic to shunt people into a forum that's pretty rigged for the corporation."
But the reality for every promoter is that in the world of fickle fans you now need to "Entertain to Survive". Last year the Miami Grand Prix was the hottest ticket in South Beach and, while resale demand has softened, this year's race is again a sellout with 90,000 attending Sunday's race. While the grand prix is the anchor for a weekend of fun, the races themselves are no longer enough to make the event a financial and commercial success. Hard Rock alone hosts three of Florida's biggest sports - the Miami Grand Prix and the Miami Open tennis as well as being home to the NFL's Dolphins. Miami debuted a new driver introduction to the grid that F1 says will be used at eight races this season.
Despite more competitive sessions, fans were left disappointed with the lack of overtaking in last week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix. What happened last yearIn last year’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix, Ferrari locked out the front row in qualifying with Charles Leclerc taking pole position and teammate Carlos Sainz starting P2. Max Verstappen is the only previous winner of the Miami Grand Prix. Only a chaotic Australian Grand Prix, in which Pérez began from the pit lane after crashing in qualifying, has prevented a perfect start for Red Bull. CNN —Two more horses have died at Churchill Downs, the home of the famed Kentucky Derby, officials from the track announced on Saturday. A total of seven horses have now died at the racetrack in the week-long lead up to the race. On Friday, racehorse trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. was suspended indefinitely by Churchill Downs following the “highly unusual” deaths of two of his horses, Parents Pride and Chasing Artie. Three other horses – not trained by Joseph – also died in recent days. According to Churchill Downs, Wild on Ice, a Derby contender, was hurt while training on Thursday and Take Charge Briana was injured in a race on Tuesday.
CNN —Mage won the 149th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday. “It took me a little while to get there, to finally get it.” The victory was the first at the Kentucky Derby for Castellano in 16 attempts. Albert Cesare/USA Today/ReutersPrior to the Kentucky Derby, Mage only had one victory in three career starts. He’s the second horse to die today at the track, making it an appalling seven deaths in advance of the Kentucky Derby. A top election official for Myanmar’s military junta has been assassinated by bicycle-riding gunmen from a rebel group, which accused him of being complicit in “oppressing and terrorizing” the public. It is the latest in a series of high-profile killings targeting a military that has escalated attacks on civilians. The official, Sai Kyaw Thu, a retired lieutenant colonel who served as deputy director general of the Union Election Commission, was fatally shot Saturday afternoon after driving his wife, a doctor, to her job at a hospital in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city. A resistance group calling itself “For the Yangon” claimed responsibility for the killing. The car ran over the bicycle and continued down the road and out of camera range.
So much for cheap tickets selling out first. The priciest tickets to attend Singapore's Formula One race this year are gone, despite being priced at an all-time high of 11,016 Singapore dollars ($8,260) for a three-day pass. Tickets for the "Paddock Club" entitle ticketholders to air-conditioned suites, unlimited Champagne, food and live performances, plus "exclusive access to the coveted daily Pit Lane Walk which gives an up-close view of the F1 cars, garages, and crew," according to the race website. Sunday night tickets for the Paddock Club, which overlooks the pit garage, are gone, though tickets for Friday or Saturday, which sell for $2,808 and $4,104 respectively, are still available, according to the website.
Haas F1 boss Steiner plays it by the book
  + stars: | 2023-04-20 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, April 20 (Reuters) - Haas boss Guenther Steiner has famously not watched the Netflix 'Drive to Survive' docu-series that made him a cult hero for a new wave of Formula One fans, but he has read every word of 'Surviving to Drive'. If they feel happy, I’m happy for them," said Steiner. He came back in 2005 when Red Bull bought the Jaguar team but then moved to NASCAR, returning to F1 when Haas debuted in 2016. RARE EXAMPLEThe book is a rare example of an active F1 boss putting his thoughts into print, however forthright and uncomplimentary. Ralf Schumacher, brother of seven times world champion Michael and uncle of Haas's dropped former driver Mick, is unlikely to enjoy it.

Long April break gives F1 time to take stock
  + stars: | 2023-04-03 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, April 3 (Reuters) - Formula One teams will welcome more than their drivers the breathing space provided by a long April break in a record 23-race season. "I don't want to have that break, because you know which race was missing from that break," said Alfa Romeo's Guanyu Zhou, the sport's only Chinese driver. "You will use it (the break) just to prepare for the next race in a better way and review the first three races. "For the race team, there's an opportunity to have a little bit of rest because the rest of the season will be tough." The break provides more time also for teams to work on upgrades and add spares after a bruising weekend for some in Australia.

The choice is theirs," Masi told News Corp media. "I've always had an open door policy and will always have an open door policy, since the moment that I arrived in this F1 paddock and that continues." Hamilton said on Thursday he had no plans to meet Masi and was only focussed on his future. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff echoed Hamilton, saying he wanted to leave the past behind. "No," he said when asked if he would meet Masi.
April 1 (Reuters) - Alex Marquez overcame a crash and fire on his Gresini Ducati machine in the first qualifying session to take his maiden pole position in MotoGP at the Argentina Grand Prix on Saturday, on a damp track where his tyre gamble paid off. "I did my best with the wet tyres. Later on I go in I thought there was no time to change the tyres. But we changed the tyres... and it was working, so really happy for that and looking forward to the sprint and the race." Maverick Vinales of Aprilia, who dominated Friday practice, was fifth fastest while Johann Zarco of Pramac Racing completes the second row.
PORTIMAO, Portugal, March 26 (Reuters) - Honda's Marc Marquez apologised for his mistake and accepted a penalty after a collision with local favourite Miguel Oliveira saw both riders crash out of season-opening Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday. loading"First of all I'm very sorry to Oli, his team, to his fans at the Portuguese GP. I did a big mistake," Marquez told MotoGP. Sometimes these kind of things happen in races and I understand I made a big mistake," he added. Honda team manager Alberto Puig said it was 'impossible' for Marquez to avoid the crash.
REUTERS/David Gray/File PhotoSYDNEY, March 6 (Reuters) - Parts of Australia's east including Sydney recorded their hottest day in more than two years on Monday with temperatures hitting more than 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit), raising the risk of bushfires. Firefighters are working to contain nearly 40 bushfires across New South Wales, the home state of one-third of Australians, with crews on the ground supported by aircraft. Penrith, a suburb in western Sydney, recorded 40.1 degrees Celsius on Monday afternoon - the hottest day since Jan. 26, 2021 - while some inland towns reached nearly 41 degrees. Australia's east coast has been dominated by the La Nina weather phenomenon - typically associated with increased rainfall - over the last two years, which brought record rains and widespread flooding. In 2022, Sydney recorded its highest annual rainfall since records began in 1858.
F1 team bosses have their own light-bulb moment
  + stars: | 2023-02-26 | by ( Alan Baldwin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
LONDON, Feb 26 (Reuters) - The late McLaren boss Teddy Mayer liked to compare Formula One drivers to interchangeable light-bulbs, declaring "you plug them in and they do the job", and nowadays the same might be said for team principals. The Frenchman is on his third different team, after stints at Sauber and Renault. "It shows also that the role of the team principal is maybe sometimes also a bit over-rated because if you can change it so quickly and there is no big impact, it tells also something. Sauber, with Swedish billionaire Finn Rausing as chairman of the board, will become the Audi works team from 2026. "But other than that we must not forget that F1 teams have developed into big organisations where the owners are not any more the team principals... some have engineers as team principals, some have more an old-fashioned rule."

The Department of Justice has accelerated its antitrust investigation into Apple , The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. Politico reported in August that the DOJ was in the "early stages" of drafting a potential complaint against the company. It's still unclear what role DOJ antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter will play in the investigation or any potential enforcement action. The Justice Department has two ongoing antitrust lawsuits against Google , with the first expected to go to trial in September. Read the full report at The Wall Street Journal.
Apple first hit a $2 trillion valuation in Aug. 2020, as the pandemic boosted its sales of computers and phones for remote work or school. It briefly hit a market value over $3 trillion during trading last January. A recent report from supply chain analyst Trendforce said that it saw Apple's iPhone shipments declining 22% in the December quarter. At just over $124 per share, Apple would hit its latest 52-week low if it closes at the current price. Apple's share price fell nearly 27% in 2020.
Elon Musk may be luring Apple into a fight with Republicans

Vance, both Republicans, made remarks about Apple's situation that show how Musk could put Apple in a tough spot. It's just one of a vast number of apps on the App Store, and it isn't a huge moneymaker for Apple through in-app purchases. He also accused Apple of threatening to pull the Twitter app from the App Store . Over the past week, Twitter owner Elon Musk has been poking Apple , the big bear of Silicon Valley, which controls app distribution to every iPhone. But Apple would be much more likely to pull the Twitter app if it tries to cut Apple out of its platform fees.
NO KIDDING"You're kidding," Magnussen had said over the team radio when told he was fastest as the red flags were waved. Saturday will be the third such race of the season, with Verstappen winning the two previous ones at Imola and in Austria. Seven-times world champion Hamilton suffered as a result of his team mate's spin and will start the sprint from eighth place. "I will speak to the team and understand what we can do better in those conditions," he said. "I accepted the decision to go on the inters and then I waited for the rain that never came."
Red Bull Racing's Dutch driver Max Verstappen poses on the podium with the trophy following his victory at the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Mie prefecture on Oct. 9, 2022. Max Verstappen sealed his second Formula 1 world championship amid huge confusion after winning a chaotic, rain-shortened Japanese Grand Prix. With between 50 per cent and 75 per cent of the laps completed, most of the F1 paddock believed Verstappen would only be awarded 19 points for his victory. But for the Japanese GP there was a different interpretation of the rules, which state that the reduced points are only applied if a race is suspended "and cannot be resumed". "The first one is a little more emotional, the second one is more beautiful," Verstappen said.

New details about the 64-year-old gambler who killed 58 Las Vegas concertgoers and wounded hundreds more on Oct. 1, 2017, were revealed in a trove of documents released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation last week. The documents don’t answer the enduring mystery of Stephen Paddock ’s motive for carrying out the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history. Paddock killed himself before he could be apprehended. The documents include the most detailed accounting of the gunman’s gambling habits and shed new light on what was going on in his mind prior to the attack.
