People visit the Nike store at 5th Avenue during the holiday season in New York City, U.S., December 9, 2022. The company had turned to steep discounting to clear the excess inventory, which had weighed on its margins in the past few quarters. Nike on Thursday estimated a 100 basis point boost to current-quarter gross margin while maintaining its annual forecasts. The jump also lifted shares of Adidas, Puma and JD Sports (JD.L) between 5%-7%. Still, demand in North America remained under pressure, leading Nike to post a slight miss on first-quarter revenue.

Adidas CEO: Kanye West didn't mean antisemitic remarks

BERLIN, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden has defended the artist formerly known as Kanye West, saying he didn't think the divisive celebrity meant the antisemitic remarks that led to his lucrative Yeezy collaboration with the German sportswear giant being axed. Commenting on the scandal which has cost Adidas tens of millions in lost sales, Gulden told the In Good Company podcast that Ye had made some statements that weren't "that good". Adidas did not respond to Reuters' emailed request for comment on the podcast interview. Strong sales of Yeezy stocks have helped narrow a projected full-year loss at the company. In the podcast, Gulden spoke of the dangers of working with celebrity collaborators: "When you work with third parties that could happen," he said.

Putting a price on celebrityIn buying a majority stake in the powerhouse Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency, François-Henri Pinault showed that high-ticket M.&A. is a game that more than one French luxury billionaire can play. Acquiring CAA — which represents stars including Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie and Pinault’s wife, Salma Hayek Pinault — underscores Pinault’s ambitions, and reinforces the growing importance of celebrity in the luxury sector. Like his archrival, Bernard Arnault of LVMH, Pinault used a series of acquisitions to assemble the luxury empire now known as Kering, starting with Gucci and later adding Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen and more. The agency will be run separately from Kering; Bryan Lourd, the superagent who represents Scarlett Johansson and Brad Pitt, will become C.E.O.

In a deal that shows the ever-growing convergence of fashion and fame, François-Henri Pinault, the French billionaire and chief executive of the luxury goods company Kering, said on Thursday that his family office had bought a majority stake in one of Hollywood’s biggest talent agencies, Creative Artists Agency. Mr. Pinault’s family office, Artémis, already has investments that include the auction house Christie’s and a stake in Puma, and like them, CAA will be managed separately from Kering, which owns such brands as Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga. The announcement comes as talent — actors, singers, filmmakers — has become a uniquely powerful tool in selling products. There is now a growing race among fashion brands to lock in relationships with the next big name. “There’s no separation between fashion and entertainment any more,” said Robert Burke, the eponymous founder of a luxury consultancy, calling the deal a “natural, if unprecedented, evolution.”

"We are nowhere near being able to fulfil the requirements of CSRD," Stefan Seidel said on a panel at the Reuters IMPACT conference in London, referring to the EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Seidel said this was despite Puma reporting on sustainability for 20 years. The Foot Locker store in Broomfield, Colorado is seen on November 17, 2016. The athletic-wear retailer also missed expectations for quarterly sales, said it would pause its dividend payouts and flagged softer demand in July, which is typically when back-to-school shopping starts. The shares of the company's larger rivals Nike (NKE.N), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS.N) and Under Armour fell between 2% and 4% in premarket trade. Foot Locker's warnings kept the pressure on sportswear retailers after they tumbled on Tuesday when Dick's Sporting Goods also cut its full-year profit targets, slammed by hits to its margins from retail theft. Foot Locker also said its quarter was hit by inventory shrink, or retail theft, and steeper discounts.

JUIGALPA, Nicaragua, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Curled up in a zoo in central Nicaragua, eyes alert and ears pricked, a puma is nursing her month-old snow-white cub. The tiny, pink-nosed puma at Thomas Belt Zoo in Juigalpa marks the Central American country's first albino puma to be born in captivity and, according to estimates from zoo veterinarian Carlos Molina, one of only four worldwide. Though the cub is healthy and eating well, Molina warned that it is still early days and that albino pumas require plenty of care and are vulnerable to sunlight. A recent report coordinated by soccer's European Club Association found as many as 82% of female players in Europe experience discomfort wearing boots. "Football brands are making welcome progress on supporting the needs of female football players," said Conservative MP Caroline Nokes, chair of British Parliament's Women and Equalities Committee. "(But) major retailers give limited recognition to women and girls when it comes to football boots. July 26 (Reuters) - German sportswear retailer Puma (PUMG.DE) on Wednesday said second-quarter sales grew by 11%, slightly ahead of market expectations thanks to stronger revenues from Asia and Europe. Puma is likely to benefit less from the trend than Adidas because its terrace range doesn't have as much name recognition, said Adam Cochrane, analyst at Deutsche Bank. Investors will be pushing Puma and Adidas on broader strategies to navigate weak consumer demand at second-quarter results on July 26 and Aug. 3 respectively. Adidas, however, has got a big boost from selling some of its stock of discontinued Yeezy shoes. On Monday it slashed its expected 2023 operating loss to 450 million euros from 700 million euros, citing unexpectedly strong Yeezy sales. "However, the cost to compete for sportswear brands is very high, and barriers to entry are low, making retailers quite vulnerable to 'boom and bust' cycles as trends change," said Aubin.
