One analyst suggests the market could see a repeat of the 2020 oil price war. AdvertisementRussia's wartime economy could face a tougher time securing needed oil revenue if Saudi Arabia tanks global crude prices. "Saudi Arabia is fed up," Simon Henderson, director of the Bernstein Program on Gulf and Energy Policy at The Washington Institute, told Business Insider. However, some kind of confrontation with Saudi Arabia may be stirring. "Unlike Saudi Arabia, its oil is not cheap to extract, making it poorly equipped to deal with low-price conditions.

Workers picket outside a Boeing Co. facility during a strike in Everett, Washington, US, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. Boeing Co. factory workers walked off the job for the first time in 16 years, halting manufacturing across the planemaker's Seattle hub after members of its largest union voted overwhelmingly to reject a contract offer and go on strike. Boeing withdrew a contract offer for 33,000 machinists who have been on strike since mid-September, and said further negotiations "do not make sense at this point." Boeing later sweetened the offer, increasing pay raises, a ratification bonus and other improvements, which the union turned down, arguing that it was not negotiated. In 2022, oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz averaged 21 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation for an attack on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria. The global economy is entering a "dangerous time" like never before as Middle East tensions remain elevated, said S&P Global's vice chairman Daniel Yergin. When asked if the global economy is on the precipice of another supply shock resulting from Middle East tensions, Yergin said it's a precarious time for markets. "The betting is that the Israelis would not attack, try to attack, the nuclear facilities at this time. It is a strategically important waterway linking crude producers in the Middle East with key markets across the world.

Fed easing hasn't led to lower mortgage rates, with the 30-year fixed rate actually rising since the first rate cut. Mortgage rates are closely linked to the 10-year US Treasury yield, which have also risen over the period. AdvertisementThe Federal Reserve's jumbo interest-rate cut in mid-September was welcome news to prospective homebuyers, with the expectation that a lower fed funds rate would help push mortgage rates lower. According to data from Mortgage News Daily, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate has jumped about 47 basis points since the Fed rate cut, to 6.62% from 6.15%. Whether that will manifest itself in lower mortgage rates is up in the air.

TSMC has high power usage, and Taiwan's tight electricity supply will test its chip production. TSMC aims for net zero emissions by 2050, but renewable energy growth faces hurdles. The surge in energy consumption last year is likely due to the increase in 3nm semiconductor production, the analysts said. In 2021, TSMC announced a commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050 through a combination of renewable energy certificates and power purchase agreements. Adding renewable energy supplies would help alleviate this problem, although the island's geography makes it difficult to increase solar and wind power sources.

CNN —Taking care of an elderly parent or seriously ill spouse or family member can be physically and emotionally draining — and expensive for the caregiver in more ways than one. While employers have been expanding their benefits to help employees start families and more easily care for their children, they are now thinking more holistically about what it means to support employees’ family lives, including benefits for things like elder care, Izbicki said. Fuller constructed a return-on-investment model to assess the value of providing caregiving benefits. Given the high cost of replacing employees, reducing turnover can mean the cost of providing caregiving benefits will more than pay for itself. The move could drive oil prices up further, creating a headache for Harris' campaign. If Israel did strike Iran's oil, it would likely have two main targets. Then, on Thursday, he said the US and Israel were discussing whether the US would support Israel striking Iran's oil facilities. Biden has indicated there are conversations between the US and Israel about whether Iran's oil facilities are a legitimate retaliatory strike option. Back in September, global oil prices fell to the lowest level in almost three years, and the US has seen a historic year of oil production.

South Korea's factory activity contracted at the sharpest pace in 15 months in September as overseas demand slowed for the first time in the year, a private survey showed on Wednesday, suggesting a slow road to a full-blown economic recovery. Output and new orders shrank in September, after gaining for five straight months, with the steepest slump in 11 months and 15 months, respectively. Specifically, export sales to China, Japan, India and the United States weakened, according to the survey. The survey showed backlogs of work, an indicator of near-term activity, fell by the most in five months, while optimism for the year ahead weakened sharply to the lowest level since December 2022.

Saudi Arabia's oil minister says crude prices could fall as low as $50 per barrel. AdvertisementSaudi Arabia's oil minister says oil prices could fall as low as $50 per barrel if OPEC+ keeps overproducing, according to a Wall Street Journal report. $50 per barrel oil would drag Brent crude, the international benchmark, down 33% from current levels. The Saudi minister called out Iraq, which surpassed its quota by 400,000 barrels per day in August, according to S&P Global Ratings data. The OPEC leader caused prices to fall below $10 per barrel in 1986 after boosting output to penalize other producers.
