If that return isn't there, will they keep ordering the latest and greatest Nvidia chips? Despite the overall improvements in availability, Nvidia on Wednesday indicated it will face supply-and-demand imbalances with its upcoming AI chips. The U.S. government has said its export controls are designed to keep high-powered AI chips out of the hands of the Chinese military. In the November-through-January quarter, China accounted for a mid-single-digit percentage of Nvidia's $18.4 billion in data center revenue, according to the company. The fact Nvidia still booked China revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars means it could take a further hit in the region.

The housing market, they claimed, was a bubble destined to burst. I’ve spent the past few years asking experts a simple question: Has the housing market reached bubble territory? AdvertisementFor a time, it seemed like the housing market was doing a speedrun through Simonsen’s checklist. And even if the economy does take a turn, a run-of-the-mill recession probably wouldn’t be enough to topple the housing market. The housing market is far from balanced, but we’re at least heading in that direction.

Although small-cap stocks have taken a hit so far this year, Goldman Sachs thinks expectations of a healthier economic backdrop make the group look attractive — especially since they're already trading at fairly cheap valuations. It's time for investors to shake off the fear of bank stocks created by last year's deposit outflows and regional bank failures, according to Oppenheimer. Analyst Chris Kotowski said in a report to clients on Tuesday that bank stocks are "significantly undervalued," highlighting that the KBW Bank Index finished 2023 down 4.8% for the year, or 29 percentage points behind the S & P 500. That gap is too large to justify even with the collapse of a few regional banks such as Silicon Valley Bank, Kotowski said. The firm's top two bank stocks are Goldman Sachs and Jefferies , both of which can serve as a bet on a rebound in the capital markets business. Kotowski also recommended several other large bank stocks, including Bank of America , JPMorgan Chase and U.S. Bancorp .

Listen, I'm not saying that all the good vibes Americans are suddenly feeling about the economy boil down to stocks, gas prices, and eggs. What improved America's economic vibes was basically three things: the soaring stock market, falling gas prices, and eggs. Research shows that consumers feel more pessimistic when gas prices go up — James Surowiecki points out in The Atlantic that high gas prices also make people less happy and more likely to hate the president. If oil prices stay relatively low and, in turn, keep gas prices down, less exasperated drivers could help Joe Biden keep his job come November. There are all sorts of geopolitical threats and unknowns that could throw global trade and oil prices (and thus gas prices) into chaos.

The Federal Reserve is risking a dotcom bubble-like market problem unless it lowers Wall Street's expectations for interest rate cuts, widely followed market strategist Ed Yardeni said. Yardeni is worried that aggressive Fed easing "risks fueling irrational exuberance," a term that former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan coined in 1996 for the runup in stock prices ahead of the dotcom bubble bursting. Those developments come a little more than a week ahead of the Fed's next policy meeting Jan. 30-31. "The Fed's last big mistake was falling behind the inflation curve in 2021 and early 2022," Yardeni said. "The Fed's next big mistake could be inflating a speculative stock market bubble.
