REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 22 (Reuters) - The United States sees the prospect of further attacks on its troops in the Middle East and the Israel-Hamas war escalating to the wider region, the top U.S. diplomat and defense officials said on Sunday. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that the United States did not want to see the conflict spread. In fact, what we're seeing … is the prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region," Austin told ABC's "This Week" program. Israel is now waging war on three fronts — the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Syria. CNN —US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Sunday the US is “concerned about potential escalation” in the Middle East a day after announcing the deployment of additional military assets to the region. “We’re concerned about potential escalation. Both the THAAD and Patriots systems are air defense systems designed to shoot down short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles. Last week, a US Navy warship operating in the Middle East intercepted multiple projectiles near the coast of Yemen fired by Iranian-backed Houthi militants, who are engaged in an ongoing conflict in the country. These steps will bolster regional deterrence efforts, increase force protection for U.S. forces in the region, and assist in the defense of Israel,” Austin said in a statement.

Opinion: What comes after Hamas?

CNN —Twenty years ago this month, I was a young Marine lieutenant marching down a California street in an Iraq War victory parade. It was the right decision to kill insurgents without losing more Marines, but leveling a school doesn’t win you a lot of hearts and minds. To be sure, there are some fundamental differences between Israel’s war with Hamas and America’s war in Iraq. Our First Marine Division motto in Iraq, under General Mattis, was “no better friend, no worse enemy.” I want Hamas to know no greater enemy than the Israeli Army, and I want to see every Hamas fighter defeated. There are a lot of peace-loving Palestinians in Gaza who loathe Hamas, but it’s up to the Israeli Army to prove themselves better friends.

Commander of the Ground Forces colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi reports to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at a position near the front line, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Donetsk region, Ukraine June 26, 2023. Ukrainian Presidential Press Service/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsKYIV, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Russia is aiming to break through Ukrainian defences in the Kupiansk-Lyman sector of the front line in northeastern Ukraine after a sharp increase in fighting there, the commander of Ukraine's ground forces said on Monday. The Ukrainian military reported in its daily update that fighting was raging along the eastern front, particularly around Kupiansk, and near Avdiivka and Mariinka in the Donetsk region. A strategically important town with a large coking plant, Avdiivka is located in the northern outskirts of the Donetsk region, much of which has been occupied by Russia. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said Ukrainian troops are holding their positions in the east.

President Vladimir Putin said Russian forces have bolstered their positions across the entire front line in Ukraine after what he said was the failure of Ukraine's counteroffensive this year. Russia currently controls about 17.5% of Ukrainian territory and a four-month-old Ukrainian counteroffensive this year by Ukrainian forces has made almost no net territorial gains, according to Western analyses of the territory held by Russia. While Ukraine took back territory taken by Russia last year, the Ukrainian army has struggled to penetrate Russian lines which have been bolstered with minefields and thousands of extra Russian troops. "What is happening now along the entire length of the [line of] contact is called 'an active defense'," Putin said. The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine's Maidan Revolution and Russia annexed Crimea, with Russian-backed forces fighting Ukraine's armed forces.

Israeli warplanes continue to bombard Gaza as ground forces mass in the surrounding area. And as forces continue to mass near the border, Israeli officials continue to signal that this is just the beginning. It's been nearly a decade since Israel last invaded Gaza, giving Hamas ample time to prepare. In Gaza, Israeli forces may be vulnerable to traps, surprise guerrilla warfare tactics, and well-armed militants who have the advantage of defending the complex terrain. Israel, nonetheless, retains strong international support from the US in its fight with Hamas, which the US regards as a terrorist organization.

Kevin McCarthy Ousted as House Speaker

The House narrowly voted to oust Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday, dooming the House speaker to a fate that seemed almost guaranteed since he took the gavel in January, with a group of rebels in his conference nipping at his heels. “The office of speaker of the House of the United States House of Representatives is hereby declared vacant,” the clerk announced as the vote concluded. A temporary speaker – Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina – is expected to take over based upon a list of succession that McCarthy submitted in January, according to House rules . But in 2015, McCarthy’s speaker bid abruptly ended amid pushback from right-wing lawmakers who have long seen him as insufficiently conservative. That bill would have cut spending and imposed immigration and border security restrictions, Republican priorities that had little chance of passing the Democratic-majority Senate. "It's not the end yet; I've got other ideas," Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters following the defeat of a bill he had backed. Social Security payments themselves would continue. Lawmakers are not considering cuts to popular benefit programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Several hardliners have threatened to oust McCarthy from his leadership role if he passes a spending bill that requires any Democratic votes to pass, an outcome almost guaranteed given that any successful House bill must also pass the Senate, controlled by Democrats 51-49.

If the legislation passes the House, it would resolve one internal problem for Speaker Kevin McCarthy while creating a new one. The bill includes most of the Secure the Border Act of 2023, a wish list of immigration provisions for GOP hardliners, with the exception of provisions requiring the use of E-Verify for employers to check immigration status. CNN —Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin — who the Russian aviation agency confirmed was a passenger on board a plane that crashed on Wednesday evening — seemed to be living on borrowed time. Video of the plane debris taken at the purported crash site in the western Tver region of Russia matches the plane registered to Prigozhin. Investigations were started within the armed forces, and probably within the security forces as well. Any effort to paint Prigozhin as wealthy and corrupt stopped almost immediately, and no new financial investigations were announced.
