“Gladiator” director Ridley Scott recently told The New York Times that Russell Crowe said Joaquin Phoenix was being “terribly unprofessional” on set when Phoenix was getting cold feet and had to be convinced to stay on the movie. Crowe headlined “Gladiator” as Maximus, with Phoenix starring as the villainous Commodus. “[Joaquin] was in his prince’s outfit saying, ‘I can’t do it,’” Scott recalled, “I said, ‘What?’ And Russell said, ‘This is terribly unprofessional.’”When asked how he convinced Phoenix to stay on the film, Scott asked: “I can act as a big brother or dad. Lucasfilm is developing a new “Star Wars” trilogy with Kinberg set to write and produce the three films with studio chief Kathleen Kennedy. This will begin a new series after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac, concluded the original nine-chapter “Skywalker Saga” in 2019. Disney currently has Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” a continuation of the Disney+ series about the helmet-wearing bounty hunter (played by Pedro Pascal), on the calendar for May 22, 2026 along with two untitled “Star Wars” movies set for Dec. 18, 2026 and Dec. 17, 2027. Lucasfilm has several other “Star Wars” projects in the works — from filmmakers such as James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover — but it’s ambiguous which of these will be the first to hit the big screen. HAVANA — Cuba’s national electrical grid collapsed on Wednesday as Hurricane Rafael slammed into the island’s southwest shore, packing sustained winds of 115 mph and wreaking havoc on the already crisis-stricken country. The hurricane was churning about 60 miles west of Cuba’s capital Havana on Wednesday night, after lashing the capital city of nearly two million people with driving rain and violent wind gusts. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center warned of a “life-threatening storm surge, damaging hurricane-force winds and flash flooding” across much of western Cuba. Cuba’s state-run grid operator UNE said the high winds had caused the country’s electrical system to collapse. Forecasters predict Rafael will spin off towards the western Gulf of Mexico later this week, though the track remains uncertain, the hurricane center said.

Desperate rescue efforts were underway across southern and eastern Spain on Thursday after torrential rain brought devastating floods that killed at least 95 people — a figure expected to rise. Stunning images emerged from Valencia, Spain’s third most populous city, showing dozens of cars wedged atop one another after being carried by a wave of mud and debris into the walls of the narrow city streets. “Unfortunately, there are dead people inside some vehicles,” said Transport Minister Óscar Puente. Nilsson said he wanted to bring Zosia back “as a human, and not as this monster that she is buried as.”
