CNN —Two people were killed and 10 others were injured in two shootings during a popular New Orleans second-line parade on Sunday, according to the New Orleans Police Department. They are 45 minutes apart from each other,” Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said during a Sunday evening news conference. “Approximately 45 minutes later, up on the bridge, we did have another outbreak of gunfire,” Kirkpatrick said. Police say it is still unclear whether the shootings are related because they occurred 45 minutes apart. The term “second line” refers to the people who follow the main brass band procession, the “first line.”“It’s a wonderful event … and we wanted to keep it a wonderful event,” she said.

We broke up in college, married different people, and got divorced at the same time. When I posted on social media that I was going through a divorce, Dan, my college sweetheart, messaged me asking if we could talk on the phone. On the phone, Dan apologized for breaking up with me through a text message back in 2002 during my junior year of college. Coincidentally, I was going to college in New York City, and he was studying aviation on Long Island, so our campuses were a quick train ride apart. Dan was shy and more serious; he wasn't interested in going to a Roman-themed college party like I was.

It took months for Democrats to settle on their primary presidential calendar, an extended battle that ended up booting Iowa and New Hampshire from the mix and vaulting South Carolina to the top of the pack. “The 2024 calendar will absolutely not be the calendar for 2028,” said Nebraska state party chair Jane Kleeb. Under the current plan, South Carolina went first, then Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. “The process has to be rigorous, efficient and fair, and we have to make sure that it’s open and transparent,” said a state chair who asked not to be named. Scrapping a state like South Carolina from the top of the list may only alienate those voters.

CNN —The Kansas City-area homes of Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were burglarized last month, according to multiple local news outlets citing authorities. Deputies responded to the first reported burglary shortly after midnight on October 6 at a home in Loch Lloyd, Missouri, a criminal report from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office states. That home belongs to Mahomes, the Chiefs’ quarterback, CNN affiliates KCTV and KSHB reported. There was no forced entry and “deputies completed an investigation and a report was taken,” according to the criminal report. The home was believed to belong to Kelce, the Chiefs tight end, KCTV said.

CNN —Week 10 of the NFL season was one full of drama, talking points and some big solo performances. QB plays like ‘best player on planet’ in historic gameThe Arizona Cardinals had a successful afternoon and that largely came thanks to the historic performance of their quarterback, Kyler Murray. He completed 22 out of 24 of his passing attempts, throwing for one touchdown and running for two more scores. Chris Coduto/Getty ImagesMurray also became the first player in NFL history to complete 85% of his passes with 250 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns. “I think the quarterback was the best player on the planet today,” Gannon said.

Leah Millis | ReutersNow that Donald Trump has been elected president, many individual investors are wondering what that means for their money. Yet, when it comes to long-term performance of the markets and policies that Trump proposed on the campaign trail, financial advisors say it's best to take a wait-and-see approach before making any big money decisions. Lee Baker, a CFP and owner of Claris Financial Advisors in Atlanta, said he's also told clients not to make wholesale financial changes now. Many investors expect Trump to lead with faster economic growth and more market-friendly policies, said Francis during a Friday webcast on what Trump's presidency could mean for investors' money. While those policies would put more money in Americans' pockets, Francis noted, other experts say it's too soon to count on those changes.

It was an eventful day for New Orleans Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi on Sunday. A special teams coach in the NFL since 2009, Rizzi won in his debut as an NFL head coach. And in his first game, Rizzi led New Orleans to a 20-17 win, snapping a seven-game losing streak. That was enough for Allen, who was promoted to head coach from defensive coordinator in 2022, to lose his job. On Sunday, the Saints handed the Atlanta Falcons — who entered winners in five of their last six — their first road loss of the season.

After winning in Washington, the first game of a daunting second-half schedule, do the Pittsburgh Steelers belong in the Super Bowl conversation? Setting aside how they compare to the rest of the NFL in 2024, how do you feel this year’s edition compares to the Chiefs teams of the past two seasons? Good teams, remember, almost always get fortuitous bounces and kind calls. This Chiefs team is more balanced and more well-rounded. And so, although the delivery may differ, this Chiefs team is just as equipped to make a Super Bowl run as any of the previous iterations.

The attention on potential Supreme Court vacancies has so far been driven entirely by forces outside the court – and rampant speculation based on a series of murky clues and past practices. “No questions could even be raised about their physical or mental health.”Ed Whelan, a former Supreme Court clerk and legal commentor, said he agreed with Leo’s take. The process of moving a Supreme Court nominee takes considerable time – often several months. The Supreme Court did not respond to a request for comment. If he wins the election in November, he has pledged to follow a similar course on another contentious policy proposal: ending birthright citizenship. Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. Trump had pledged to end birthright citizenship when first running for president in 2015 and he raised it again in 2018. Opponents of birthright citizenship say that language means citizenship is denied to anyone whose parents are not legally in the country. Sometimes relevant information could be hard to determine, such as if the immigration status of an absent parent is not known to the other.

WASHINGTON — Republicans are gearing up to lock in their remake of the judiciary under President-elect Donald Trump and a new Senate majority, including potentially installing several more conservative Supreme Court justices. Conservatives are prepared for Supreme Court retirements, with the most attention on Justice Samuel Alito, 74. GOP won't pursue Supreme Court ethics rulesTrump already transformed the federal courts in his first term, appointing 54 appeals court judges and 174 district court judges, many of whom are closely linked with the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group. Biden has made his own mark on the judiciary, appointing 210 district and appeals court judges in total, including 44 appeals court judges, falling just short of Trump’s total. “We’ll quit beating up the Supreme Court every time we don’t like the decision they make,” he said.

CNN —Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett stands apart. And that is why Barrett has become the best hope for what remains of the liberal wing, particularly after Trump’s election victory. As Trump returns to the White House, the Supreme Court may be even more positioned to check the balance of powers. Our NFL writers addressed these topics and more in making one prediction for every team heading into the season’s second half. The fourth-year back is on pace to finish with 1,256 yards, which would be the fourth-highest total in team history. Every other NFL team has put a player in at least one of those categories during that stretch — and most teams have checked both boxes. Minnesota has one of the most productive defenses in the NFL and an offense loaded at the skill positions. And the Eagles have managed to win games despite bad luck and bad decisions.

Cities and counties are voting on property and sales tax hikes to fund childcare. Other localities already have similar laws in place, with Alaska taxing marijuana sales to fund early childhood programs. We want to hear your thoughts on paying higher taxes to help fund childcare in your community. Three localities are voting to increase taxes to boost childcare funding for low-income and middle-class families. AdvertisementA similar measure in St. Paul, Minnesota, would also hike property taxes to fund citywide childcare initiatives for low-income families.

CNN —Week 9 in the NFL saw plenty of drama as the 2024 season reached its halfway stage. Seven games in Week 9 were decided by seven-or-fewer points, meaning there have been 74 games won by that margin this season, the most such games through Week 9 in NFL history. Lions beat Packers in heavyweight clashSunday’s game at Lambeau Field between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers was billed as the game of the week with both having excellent starts to the season. Saquon Barkley athleticism leaves Eagles ‘speechless’Saquon Barkley is no stranger to producing highlight-worthy plays of special athleticism. The official NFL X account commented that Barkley was “not of this world” and Sirianni was equally dumfounded after the Eagles’ victory.

Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.
