South African police were in a standoff Friday with hundreds of illegal miners believed to be underground in a disused shaft, after a cabinet minister said the government was trying to “smoke them out.”Police have been trying for weeks to empty the abandoned gold mine in the North West province as part of a crackdown on illegal mining, which has plagued South Africa for decades through small-time pilfering and organized criminal networks.More than 1,000 illegal miners resurfaced after police cut off their food and water supplies, but a police spokesperson said hundreds more could still be underground. South African police officers escort community members to a mine shaft to negotiate with artisanal miners in Stilfontein on Wednesday. Emmanuel Croset / AFP via Getty ImagesA decomposed body was brought up on Thursday, with pathologists on the scene, spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said. On Wednesday, asked whether the government would send help to the zama-zamas — a local term for illegal miners from the Zulu expression for “taking a chance” — Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said: “We are not sending help to criminals. Illegal gold mining costs South Africa’s government and industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually in lost sales, taxes and royalties, according to an estimate by a mining industry body.

Staff turnover is typical when a new administration comes in, and a significant number of FDA employees similarly considered leaving before President-elect Donald Trump’s first term in office, said one former and one current official. At the time, there were also concerns about what the FDA would look like under the first Trump administration. This time, however, there’s an added layer of anxiety outside Trump: Kennedy. The current official agreed with that assessment, adding that “dozens” are most likely considering their options. One former official and one current official said that at this time it’s all chatter and it’s unclear if anyone has left yet or made any serious plans to do so.

The Onion, the satirical news company that repeatedly spoofed conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has won the bankruptcy auction for control over his media empire — most notably Infowars, the far-right, conspiracy-minded website that served as Jones’ primary online platform. The Onion plans to shutter Jones’ Infowars and rebuild the website featuring well-known internet humor writers and content creators, according to a person with knowledge of the sale. About an hour and a half after the announcement of the sale, Infowars' website was shut down. Details of Wednesday’s auction, including how much was offered for Free Speech Systems, the parent company of Infowars, and related assets, were not immediately known. “All you leftists celebrating the end of Alex Jones and Infowars, you’re fools,” he said.

Four years after the radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsed, a report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is shining a light on the unprecedented failures that caused its destruction. The zinc gradually lost its hold on the cables suspending the telescope’s main platform over the reflector dish. The telescope was built in the 1960s with money from the Defense Department amid a push to develop anti-ballistic missile defenses. Following a few other cable failures, the federal agency decided to begin a plan to decommission the telescope in November 2020. In 2022, the National Science Foundation said it would not rebuild Puerto Rico's renowned radio telescope.

Amid a presidential loss and hand-wringing over the wreckage, congressional gains for Democrats in New York state are one of the small bright spots shining out from the party’s bleak results. Miller was a powerful White House aide in Trump’s first term, authoring much of his most fiery scripted rhetoric as a speechwriter. Yet despite these draconian visions, there’s uncertainty about how far Trump will go in his deportation program and whether it matches his dystopian speeches. Many Democrats and Republicans could agree on Trump’s vow to start by deporting criminal undocumented migrants — the easiest part of his plan. Trump’s critics and vulnerable undocumented migrants, however, will find little in the president-elect’s new staff picks to offer them comfort. In every incoming presidential administration, staffing is important and provides ideological clues to how a White House will act.

Two US Navy destroyers came under attack by the Houthis on Monday. The destroyers USS Stockdale and USS Spruance came under fire as they were transiting the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a strategic maritime chokepoint between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Navy repelled multiple Houthi attacks involving at least three anti-ship cruise missiles, five anti-ship ballistic missiles, and eight one-way attack drones, Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters at a press briefing Tuesday. Earlier, the Houthis said they attacked the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea and two unnamed American destroyers in the Red Sea.
