Americans who've moved to Europe often share the most shocking things about their new environments. NEW LOOK Sign up to get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in markets, tech, and business — delivered daily. Americans living in Europe sometimes report relatively well-known differences as culture shocks, including siesta culture in Spain, where an afternoon nap is customary, and differences in tipping expectations . But there's at least one slightly more unexpected culture shock that many American expats can't stop talking about — hang drying clothes instead of using electric dryers. Some Americans have also filmed themselves navigating a drying rack, which they said they weren't used to using in the US.

The White House has said there is one American woman and seven men unaccounted for following Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. The talks have stalled, and there does not appear to be any real prospects of those discussions starting back up any time soon, according to multiple senior administration officials. National security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday the US is doing “everything in our power” to get hostages released from Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that there are 136 hostages still being held in Gaza, including 17 women and children. It is unclear how many of those are being held by Hamas as opposed to other militant groups that operate in the territory.

Chinese President Xi Jinping meets with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 6, 2023. While trade compulsions have forced the Asia-Pacific nation to reach out to China, security concerns over Beijing's South China Sea claims have prevented a reset in ties. Trade talksPart of Beijing's calculus is rooted in Australia economic dependence on China. According to the Australian government, China is its largest trading partner, accounting for nearly a third of the country's total trade with the world. The following day, Lena and her family went back to the border — their fourth trip — as the first aid trucks were scheduled to enter Gaza through the Rafah crossing. Hoping they would finally get to cross, the family waited at the border for hours, along with hundreds of others. Around 4:30 p.m., there was still no movement and no officials at the gates, Lena said. Over the next several days, Lena’s daughters in Gaza were “holding on by a thread,” Lena wrote in a message. Lena said she frequently called the State Department, but they could not tell her when she might be able to leave.

CNN —One year out from Election Day 2024, former President Donald Trump narrowly leads President Joe Biden, 49% to 45% among registered voters, in a hypothetical rematch in the latest CNN poll conducted by SSRS. And among voters of color generally, women divide 63% Biden to 31% Trump, while men split about evenly, 49% Trump to 46% Biden. Only about half of Democrats (51%) say Biden has the sharpness and stamina to serve, compared with 90% of Republicans who say Trump does. Primary matchups for both parties suggest a Biden vs. Trump election is the most likely scenario as of now. Likewise, the 18% of registered voters who have unfavorable views of both Biden and Trump split 44% Trump, 35% Biden and 17% for someone else.

CNN —Republicans’ House speaker morass continued Tuesday with a little help from former President Donald Trump. Yet another lawmaker with support from most House Republicans – Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, who was picked as their party’s nominee – failed to get the support of nearly all Republicans. What is ‘uniparty?’The term “uniparty” has been a favorite of people like Steve Bannon, the former Trump White House official turned podcaster. “You’ve got a small band of House conservatives who are fighting, really, in a lot of ways, a political guerrilla war against that uniparty,” Gaetz said. The majority of House Republicans backed Emmer, their fourth choice this year to be speaker, in both secret ballot voting and a behind-closed-doors roll call vote.

CNN —President Joe Biden and his top aides are absorbing the explosion of violence in Israel on Saturday and contending with a complicated diplomatic situation unlike any previous conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. A fractured political environment among the Palestinians will make it difficult for American officials to identify a reliable negotiating partner. The last time major violence broke out between Gaza and Israel, Biden and senior American officials played a critical behind-the-scenes role in brokering a ceasefire. It included a lengthy one-on-one component without any aides present, and Biden invited Netanyahu to visit the White House. Still, Netanyahu’s attempts to keep his far-right governing coalition together could make American diplomatic intervention in the conflict even more difficult as he comes under pressure for a full-scale response.

Lindell insulted him, his lawyers, the judge, and took a break to go on Steve Bannon's podcast. When he stood up to take a call in the middle of questioning, Coomer's lawyers called it a day. In an interview with Insider on Friday, Lindell called Coomer's lawyers "creepy" and "evil." He said he had to take a personal "emergency call" before the deposition ended, and that Coomer's lawyers were aware it was coming. During the depositions, Lindell fiercely guarded his pillow company's brand and bristled at any suggestion that one of its latest products, the MyPillow 2.0, could be subpar.

CNN —Far-right TV network One America News and one of its on-air personalities settled a defamation lawsuit brought by a former executive at Dominion Voting Systems, the election technology company that was falsely accused of rigging the 2020 election, according to new court filings. By negotiating a deal with Coomer, OAN is resolving one of several pending lawsuits tied to the 2020 presidential election that could lead to dire financial consequences for the small network. The conspiracy-peddling channel still faces two blockbuster defamation suits from Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic, voting technology companies that OAN falsely claimed had rigged the election against Trump. As a correspondent for OAN, Rion has been at the forefront of the network’s pro-Trump propaganda, and she hosted a special called “Dominion-izing the Vote,” which promoted debunked conspiracies about the 2020 election results. Eve Hanan Courtesy Eve HananNot surprisingly, there are other criminal laws that are straightforward and appropriate to invoke against Trump. But Willis doesn’t stop there, and her invocation of RICO charges in particular raises concerns. To justify her RICO charges against Trump, Willis must point to particular acts by the former president that advanced the alleged criminal enterprise. Ukraine’s grinding counteroffensive has struggled to break through entrenched Russian defenses in large part because it has too many troops, including some of its best combat units, in the wrong places, according to several American officials. U.S. officials have advised the Ukrainians to revise their tactics. Three months in, there are signs that the Ukrainians may be taking the advice to heart as casualties mount. In a video teleconference this month, top Western military officials urged Ukraine’s most senior military commander, Gen. Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, to focus on one main front. According to two officials briefed on the call, General Zaluzhnyi agreed.

The US Air Force said it found unsafe levels of possible cancer-causing chemicals at a Montana base. It found the chemicals in nuclear missile launch control centers at Malmstrom Air Force Base. A team of experts that carried out testing at Malmstrom Air Force Base in June discovered levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that were above federally recommended thresholds in two facilities at the site, Air Force Global Strike Command said in a statement on Monday. "Of the swipes, 279 returned non-detectable results," the Air Force said. None of the air samples of the launch control centers and launch control support building revealed any detectable levels for PCBs.
