The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee said Monday in a news release that James had won a vote among nearly 600 members of Team USA to carry the flag. A female athlete was also selected and the committee said that vote would be revealed Tuesday. He last played in the Olympics in 2012 in London, where he and the current American team will play an exhibition Monday night against Germany. Grant Fisher and Abdihamid Nur compete in the men's 5000 meter final on Day Ten of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Track & Field Trials at Hayward Field on June 30, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon. "Their performances at an Olympic Games, in our own World Championships, provide world athletics with broadcast revenue from the International Olympic Committee and at a world championship level," he continued. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe defended his decision to pay prize money to track and field gold medalists for the first time at the Paris Olympics this summer, suggesting that the initiative could be extended to future games. The first phase focused on allocating funds to World Athletics' national governing bodies to support athletes and pay for projects. Coe, who is serving his third term as World Athletics president, deflected rumors that he may be in line to succeed Thomas Bach as IOC president.

When the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, one of its first actions was to bar women and girls from participating in sports publicly. Female athletes in Afghanistan today face similar threats from the Taliban, including physical abuse and raids on their homes. The most recent example is the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow a team representing Afghanistan in the Paris Games. It should let the athletes — most of whom live in exile — compete on the Refugee Olympic Team, which would send a message of hope to refugees around the world. But none of the three women representing Afghanistan — in athletics and cycling — live and train in the country, nor could they visit without risking their lives.

The Tokyo Olympics in 2021 were the hottest in history. But the Paris Games could soon edge them out for the title. A June report highlighted the potential health risks for athletes competing in extreme heat at this year’s Games. Training for the Olympics is now as much about athletes’ ability to handle the heat as it is about strength and speed. “The best way a person can prepare is acclimatization,” said Dr. Carolyn Broderick, the medical director of the Australian Olympic team at the Paris Olympics.

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into how antidoping authorities and sports officials allowed elite Chinese swimmers who had tested positive for a banned substance to escape punishment and win a slew of medals — including three golds — at the last Olympics, according to two people briefed on the matter and swimming’s international governing body. The decision to move forward with a criminal investigation is a dramatic escalation by the United States against the Chinese, world antidoping authorities and the Olympic movement, and will cast a shadow of criminality over the Summer Games, which are scheduled to begin later this month in Paris. Eleven of the swimmers who tested positive — and who have never been suspended for doping — are again members of the Chinese Olympic team. Several are favorites to again win medals.

The 30-year-old high jumper cleared 1.89 meters at the Ukrainian Athletics Championships on Sunday, not enough to qualify for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris. Many athletes have moved abroad in order to continue their careers and train for this year’s Games. This means that teams of Russian and Belarusian athletes will not be considered, while athletes who actively support the war against Ukraine will also be ineligible. No reference to either country will be made at the Games through the athletes’ participation, such as flags, anthems or national colors. “We’re not friends, we’re not competitors,” Ryzhykova told CNN about facing Russian and Belarusian athletes.

CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.

Organizers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics plan to hold swimming in the home of the NFL’s Rams and Chargers — and softball and canoe slalom in Oklahoma. That’s according to an amended venue plan unveiled Friday by LA28, the 2028 Games’ organizing committee. It will be the largest swimming venue in Games history, per LA28, with 38,000 seats. LA28 organizers faced one complication with the SoFi swimming plan, however: The stadium is also set to be part of the Games’ opening ceremonies. The venue plan adjustments are in part due to new arenas that have become available for use and a previously assigned venue that became unavailable, LA28 said.
