Nike on Tuesday posted disappointing quarterly sales growth and warned its holiday season would likely be filled with discounts. Worries over Nike hit shares in JD Sports in early deals. In the 26 weeks to Aug. 3, JD posted adjusted pretax profit of 405.6 million pounds ($538.8 million), beating analysts' expectations of 384 million pounds. For the full financial year, JD reiterated its guidance for profit of between 955 million pounds and 1.035 billion pounds, up from 917.2 million pounds in 2023/24.

The average visitor to CNN’s website, who may only read a few articles a month, will not be prompted to pay at this time. “Only after users consume a certain number of free articles will they be prompted to subscribe,” MacCallum explained. Under previous management, CNN developed a streaming video product called CNN+ in 2022 to create direct-to-consumer relationships with fans of the network. Australia's inflation rate has come within the RBA's target range in the month of August, easing from 3.5% in July to 2.7%., according to a Wednesday release from the country's Bureau of Statistics. The drop puts the rate below the Reserve Bank of Australia's target range of 2%-3% for the first time since August 2021. He said that while the relief programs will bring headline inflation to the top of the RBA's target range, the RBA will be "looking through" these subsidies and focusing on core inflation. He writes, "the path of core inflation back to the target range has stalled somewhat, and it is hard to see a major improvement in the near term. We think the bank will need to see three more inflation prints before they are comfortable embarking on an easing cycle."

CNN —Astronomers have observed a massive pair of jets releasing from a supermassive black hole 7.5 billion light-years from Earth. The megastructure spans 23 million light-years in length, making these black hole jets the largest ever seen, according to new research. That's 24% lower than the 11.6 trillion rubles it recorded in 2022, when revenues jumped due to oil price volatility. In 2021, Russia's oil and gas sales revenue stood at 9 trillion rubles. To be sure, other geopolitical factors could also be playing into Russia's decision to keep natural gas exports moving into Europe.

CNN —A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous “L’empire des lumières” series is estimated to sell for more than $95 million at Christie’s New York this fall, a sum that would break the Surrealist artist’s record at auction and represent a major win for the auction house after softened sales across the industry. “L’empire des lumières,” from 1954, is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. Packaged foods, soda, chips, hot dogs, chicken nuggets and ice cream all fall under the category of ultraprocessed foods, which can include dozens of synthetic additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial dyes. For every 10% increase in the amount of a person’s diet made up of ultraprocessed foods, the team found that there was a 17% increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the data showed. The scientists also found that reducing the amount of ultraprocessed food you are consuming can lower the risk, according to the study. “Ultra-processed foods are everywhere,” Dicken said via email. “We also know that increased body fat (from excess calories) increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
