Lansky said he was inspired by a discussion he had with a pilot he sat next to on a flight years ago. When the safety demonstration video began, “I noticed he wasn't paying attention to it. “You really need to kind of visualize actually lifting the flap,” Lansky told CNBC Travel. “Oh yes,” a U.S. flight attendant with more than two decades of experience told CNBC Travel. He said he asked flight attendants how many times they bump passengers elbows, knees and feet on long-haul flights.

Film and TV investor Content Partners just announced a new financing arm at a time when some institutional investors are fleeing Hollywood. It kicked off with a deal providing debt financing to Media Capital Technologies to support its backing of Lionsgate's film slate. Content Partners Capital (CPC) is targeting up to five deals a year of up to $100 million each in debt financing for film and TV companies. Lordo said Content Partners saw a void to help entertainment companies that are stuck in a financing bind, unable to get bank or private-equity backing. When the media executive Edgar Bronfman Jr. submitted his last-ditch bid on Monday to take control of Paramount, his approach was greeted with surprise and skepticism. Who would take his unconventional coalition of investors seriously, especially when an $8 billion deal with Skydance was on the table? The bid has transformed Paramount’s sale into a battle of family dynasties. But the deal is now threatened by the bid from Bronfman — a grandson of the Seagram mogul Samuel Bronfman — whose early foray steering the family business into media several decades ago has left a cloud over his career. The son of one billionaire is now pitted against the son of another.

John Lansing, who as chief executive of NPR from 2019 until earlier this year guided the broadcasting organization through a global pandemic, an imploding media landscape and widening political polarization that called into question some of its journalistic principles, died on Aug. 14 at his home in Eagle River, Wis. An NPR representative confirmed the death but did not cite a cause. Mr. Lansing, who had been in the news business since he graduated from high school, arrived at NPR with a mission to broaden its reach beyond traditional radio into media like podcasts and newsletters. He also announced what he considered his “north star”: a commitment to expand NPR’s audience to include a younger and more diverse demographic, and a parallel commitment to diversify, equity and inclusion in its coverage, sources and staff. His changes included documenting the diversity of sources, introducing unconscious bias training and hiring people of color for both on- and off-air positions.

How to increase your attention span amid digital overload

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

For nearly a decade, governments and civil rights groups have increasingly argued that online platforms have created enormous societal costs. Many social media companies have invested heavily in content moderation over the years. In the European Union, officials are looking to hold social media companies accountable for spreading misinformation under the new Digital Services Act. In the UK, the Online Safety Act could take effect as soon as this year, requiring, among other things, social media platforms to remove illegal content. “We’re going to have to look more broadly at social media after this disorder,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a video distributed to media Friday.

A federal grand jury is set to begin hearing evidence this month in the scam to steal the Graceland estate from Elvis Presley’s family, sources say. It involved a company called Naussany Investments, which claimed that Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only child, owed millions of dollars in unpaid loans before she died. To collect on that debt, Naussany Investments sought control of Graceland through a foreclosure sale of the historic mansion. The documents Naussany Investments filed turned out to be forged, and a judge tossed out the case. More than half a dozen links seemed to separately connect Holden with the foiled scam at Graceland, NBC News found.

The Guardian said Brown wrote to police after documents that were recently made public during civil court proceedings reportedly showed Lewis met with detectives in 2011. After he was hired by the Post, Lewis also tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. In May, Brown wrote to the Metropolitan Police and said he was told that the “Met’s special inquiry team” would look into it. The security threats were believed to be genuine and were not devised as part of an alleged ‘cover-up’ and there is no evidence to show that is the case,” the News UK spokesperson said. The allegations swirling around Lewis have roiled The Washington Post newsroom in recent months.

JD Vance embodies the pros and cons of political competition in a divided America. Vance’s reputation as defender of the globalization-battered working class can help Trump in the electorally crucial Midwest industrial belt states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. But Vance is also an absolutist on restricting abortion, the Republican’s biggest current weakness, according to polls. He has adopted Trump’s line that abortion rules should be left to the states, but his voting record is striking. In an interview with the Youngstown Ohio Vindicator, Vance contended that there was extensive fraud in 2020 including a “big-tech” conspiracy directed by Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook.

The blue screen of death errors on computer screens are viewed due to the global communications outage caused by CrowdStrike, which provides cyber security services to US technology company Microsoft, on July 19, 2024 in Ankara, Turkey. A global tech outage that was related to a software update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected nearly 8.5 million Microsoft devices, Microsoft said in a blog on Saturday. "We currently estimate that CrowdStrike's update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines," it said in the blog. CrowdStrike has helped develop a scalable solution that will help Microsoft's Azure infrastructure accelerate a fix, Microsoft said, adding that the tech giant had worked with both Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform to collaborate on the "most effective approaches." Air passengers worldwide faced delays, flight cancellations and headaches checking in as airports and airlines were caught up in the IT outage that affected numerous industries ranging from banks to media companies.

And while Democratic megadonors pressure Biden to step aside, donor events that feature Harris have started to sell out.
