Does Your Résumé Pass the Six-Second Test?
  + stars: | 2023-04-16 | by ( Kailyn Rhone | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
No pressure, but your résumé has six seconds to make an impression before it is sent to the don’t-even-bother pile. That is how long a recruiter typically skims a résumé to decide whether to pass it on to a hiring manager, said J.T. O’Donnell, chief executive of career-coaching site Work It Daily. Recruiters often have hundreds of online applications to wade through, even with algorithms helping filter many of them out. They will likely give yours little more than a glance to judge whether you make it onto the shortlist of candidates.

What does 2023 hold for investors? Prediction: Debt bombSarah NewcombSarah Newcomb, director of financial psychology at Morningstar“I’m concerned about the lack of saving in America as a whole. We had a moment of higher savings rates when the pandemic first hit, and people realized they needed to be prepared for anything. The optimism of these entrepreneurs for continued growth in the new year points to resilience amid some tough financial decisions they’ll likely make in 2023. “For instance, we expect to see a rise in debt consolidation as business owners look to combat the rate environment.

IRS delays $600 income reporting rule for U.S. gig workers
  + stars: | 2022-12-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
WASHINGTON, Dec 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. Internal Revenue Service said on Friday it would delay a new rule requiring more extensive reporting by gig workers and others who are paid through third party apps, after complaints the rule was too onerous. The rule, part of the COVID-19 relief bill called the "American Rescue Plan," would have required people paid over $600 in 2022 on third party payment apps like Venmo or PayPal to report that figure as income to the tax agency. "The IRS and Treasury heard a number of concerns regarding the timeline of implementation of these changes under the American Rescue Plan,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O’Donnell. Millions of Americans earn significant portions of their income through freelance gigs, selling items through websites like eBay and Etsy and through home rental apps. New York CNN —Anyone getting paid for their goods and services through apps like Venmo, PayPal or CashApp, or platforms like Etsy and Airbnb, just got a reprieve from the IRS. But the 1099-K reporting will make it harder for someone to evade the taxes they owe by underreporting their business income. The rule also does not apply to personal transactions you conduct on an electronic payment platform. Lastly, the 1099-K reporting rule does not apply to any transactions made through Zelle. But the IRS may still get reporting on at least some of your business transactions on Zelle, Walker said.
The man behind Trump World’s myth of rigged voting machines

He publicly announced his purchase of Montgomery’s data in August at a gathering in Missouri of hundreds of his followers. “I own it,” Lindell said of Montgomery’s data, touting it as irrefutable proof Trump was cheated. On Nov. 9, far-right podcaster Joe Oltmann linked Montgomery’s Hammer and Scorecard claims to a parallel conspiracy theory: that widely used voting machines manufactured by Dominion Voting Systems were rigged to flip votes from Trump to Biden. Powell amended her complaint a few days later and dropped the expert’s declaration and the references to Montgomery’s claims. But the government said in a recent court filing that the order has nothing to do with election data.
Negotiators reached a historic deal at a United Nations biodiversity conference early Monday that would represent the most significant effort to protect the world’s lands and oceans and provide critical financing to save biodiversity in the developing world. The global framework comes a day before the U.N. Biodiversity Conference, or COP15, is set to end in Montreal. China, which holds the presidency at this conference, released a new draft earlier in the day that gave the sometimes contentious talks much-needed momentum. The most significant part of the agreement is a commitment to protect 30% of land and water considered important for biodiversity by 2030. “The new text is a mixed bag,” Andrew Deutz, director of global policy, institutions and conservation finance for The Nature Conservancy, said.

‘The Wonder’ Review: Investigating an Irish Miracle
  + stars: | 2022-11-16 | by ( John Anderson | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
One of the many virtues of “The Wonder,” which includes a sublime performance by Florence Pugh , is the case it makes for itself as a film. Not every story can or should be a movie, despite Hollywood’s insistence otherwise. Some should remain books. Adapted from Emma Donoghue ’s novel and directed by Sebastián Lelio , “The Wonder” is set in the rural Ireland of 1862, a scant dozen years after the Great Hunger. She also comes under the scrutiny of a committee of townsmen, some of whom are ready to proclaim her a saint.
They opened up a zone in the hallway where we transported patients down to the emergency and put beds there so that we could keep seeing patients. I've heard this from other PICU nurses in other parts of the country. We're seeing a shortage of pediatric nurses across the countryNot everyone can be a travel nurse. I work with a healthcare company that supplies travel nurses, and we have seen 100% uptick in the request for pediatric nurses and PICU nurses. I think that's due to a lot of PICU nurses during COVID taking care of adult patients.
Tim Michels, the Republican nominee for governor in Wisconsin, said Friday he would support an abortion ban that includes exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, a shift from his earlier stance on the issue. In an interview on the Dan O’Donnell show, a conservative talk radio program in Wisconsin, Michels was asked if he would sign an abortion ban bill that included exceptions. Asked on Friday if his new stance on abortion was a shift, Michels sidestepped the question. “Michels has staked out the most extreme position possible on this issue, and as governor, wouldn’t hesitate to enact radical legislation that would put women’s lives at risk. Earlier this year, voters in Kansas voted to uphold abortion rights in their state.
During the game, she said, the crowd nearby began chanting “F--- the Mormons.” Over and over. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU’s sponsoring institution, Aubrey wanted the chanting to stop. Latter-day Saints have a fair track record when it comes to cheek-turning. There’s of course a balance to strike in the case of the Oregon chants. And yet, if you can publicly chant “F--- the Mormons” with only minimal social consequences, it’s time for Latter-day Saints to collectively push, as Aubrey sought to do, for greater and more immediate action.
WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump is no stranger to legal scrutiny, but there's something different about the $250 million civil lawsuit New York Attorney General Letitia James filed against him Wednesday: This time, it's as personal for him as it is political. It’s a personal blow for him that this even happened.”Upping the stakes, James named Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump as co-defendants in accusing the former president's companies of manipulating business records to secure favorable loans, fool insurers and win tax benefits. "As executive vice presidents, the three children were intimately involved in the operation of the Trump Organization's business," James' lawsuit alleges. Allies say that, if anything, James' lawsuit will rally Republicans around him. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump took to Twitter, accusing James of using their family to advance her own political interests and those of the Democratic Party.
