Before There Was Pee-wee, There Was Pinky

The comedian Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Though Pinky Lee is an unfamiliar name today, it would not have been to a man of Mr. Reubens’s generation. Pee-wee Herman was born Paul Rubenfeld in 1952 in Peekskill, NY; Mr. Lee was born Pincus Leff in 1907 in Saint Paul, Minn. Rubenfeld, who was a talented child actor, would rename himself Reubens and become an improv comic. His early work with the The Groundlings in Los Angeles, notably in a Pinky parody skit, would eventually form the basis for one of the more indelible characters in show business. Mr. Lee came up through the ranks as a tap dancer on the vaudeville circuit.

We know there are so many reasons why this bull market has eluded so many. It's sudden broadening into health care, transports and financials just when we were told the bull was slain by its lack of breadth. I hope readers here know that I felt that only by tuning out the Fed could you make maximum money in the market. You simply had to ignore the verbiage, block out the gasbags who simply failed to see the two-staged bull market right in front of them. Needless to say, if you needed any evidence that we are in a bull market, the rally in that dog may be enough to make the prosecution rest.

A freshly ground masa tortilla, as it cooks on a comal, inflates as the steam inside pushes apart the sides and releases an intoxicating toasted corn aroma. It actually tastes like nutty, earthy corn, with a soft, chewy texture and almost custardy center. And its role is not just to transport a taco filling and salsas from your plate to your mouth, but to complement and ground the bright, acidic and spicy flavors with something rich and soothing, familiar and homey. The chef Fermín Núñez of Suerte, in Austin, Texas, considers masa “the canvas of what Mexican cooking is all about.”“Without masa,” he said, “there’s no tortillas, and, without tortillas, there’s no tacos!”When it opened in 2018, Suerte was one of the few restaurants in the country making masa from heirloom varieties of corn and using it to make tortillas, tlacoyos, tlayudas, tamales and taquitos. “I wanted to create a restaurant that was obsessed with creating the best masa from corn that was grown in Texas,” he said, adding he hoped to make “a tortilla that was unique to us but reminded you of the best ones you’ve had in Mexico.”

Bryan Johnson spends up to $2 million a year on a rigorous program to reduce his biological age. The tech exec recently confirmed he eats his last meal of the day at 11 a.m.His typical "dinner" consists of meals like an orange and fennel salad or a stuffed sweet potato. In order to dramatically reduce his biological age, 45-year-old tech entrepreneur Bryan Johnson abides by a rather unconventional eating schedule: He eats his last meal of the day at 11 a.m.Johnson has an $2 million-a-year anti-aging program known as Project Blueprint. Johnson wrote that this behavior had repercussions on his mood, sleep, and performance. Since then only "Morning Bryan" is authorized to make decisions on when, what, and how much to eat, Johnson wrote.

Lewis Black, ‘Tragically, I Need You’(YouTube)If a stand-up can tap into or channel the fury of an audience, he can light up a room. Lewis Black’s great gift is that behind that dyspeptic front, you could detect a thoughtful, introspective side, a little damaged perhaps. He shows us more of that vulnerable side here, in part because the isolation of the pandemic put him in a reflective mood. Along with swinging sharp political elbows, in defense of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, say, Black beats himself up over past relationships and sings the praises of companionship. He talks about his failed career as a playwright, bringing up theater because “I like to feel the interest of the audience leave the room.”
Turkey is expected to head to the polls on Sunday. In the event of a victory by Erdogan, it's "highly likely the Turkish lira collapses within months," the founder of advisory firm Cribstone Strategic Macro Mike Harris told CNBC. "Ultimately the lack of confidence in investment will mean that the Turkish Lira will probably be among the worst performing currencies in the world for some time," he said. Turkey's monetary policy prioritizes the pursuit of growth and export competition rather than assuaging inflation. Erdogan endorses the unconventional view that raising interest rates increases inflation, rather than taming it.
The savory waffle is a delightful blend of strong flavors: sesame, scallion, sharp cheese toasted until golden brown. The chocolate waffle — for true chocolate lovers — is intensified by unsweetened cocoa powder. It’s for your breakfast or brunch plate, but can double as a sweet snack with coffee or a dessert topped with whipped cream and berries. Aṣa loves making waffles but won’t eat them unless chocolate is the central ingredient. My 1-year-old, Midé, will eat anything, but what she loves most is making epic messes.
Eric Kim has a strategy for how he approaches restaurants: Live life on the edge of the menu. Just because a restaurant is known for one thing doesn’t mean you can’t order something else. Sometimes the oddity on a menu might be the chef’s passion project, which is reason enough to order it. When Mr. Kim visited the city for a friend’s wedding in January, his eyes gravitated toward the citrus-glazed turnips. Who knew that the star of his seafood lunch would be a side dish of turnips?
Nicolas Cage, Ranked From Wild to Mild
  + stars: | 2023-04-26 | by ( Erik Piepenburg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In the early 1980s, Nicolas Cage got his first big breaks in Martha Coolidge’s “Valley Girl” and Amy Heckerling’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” films that zeroed in on the peculiar allure of his dopey bad boy persona. Watching him was like eating a banana split: You tasted something nutty, sweet, indulgent, all-American. Since then, few actors have been able to match how nimble a polymorph Cage is in genre, how easily he power-bounces between action (“National Treasure”), comedy (“Moonstruck”) and horror (“Pay the Ghost”). He’s done the same for a who’s who of boundary-pushing directors, including the Coen brothers (“Raising Arizona”), David Lynch (“Wild at Heart”) and Spike Jonze (“Adaptation”). Each is rated on a scale of bees — one for sleepy, five for loony — in honor of the insects that tortured him in the 2006 remake of “The Wicker Man.”
Last month, Starbucks launched a new line of olive oil-infused coffee and espresso drinks in Italy. Starbucks Reserve Roasteries in Chicago, Seattle, and New York will be the first stores to offer the olive oil elixirs. Reserve stores like the chain's new Empire State Building location sell premium coffee and espresso drinks. Dousing your morning brew with olive oil may sound unappetizing to some. The Delish food site said the Oleato Iced Shaken Espresso was a terrific choice for iced coffee fans.

Catton resembles one of those teachers who can take a student’s simple-minded question and, without condescending, shape it into an ingenious one. The bullets really fly in “Birnam Wood.” The big explosion will probably go off. The Birnam Wood collective makes sure its apolitical Facebook page is sunny and welcoming. Birnam Wood has this cockeyed, D.I.Y. She’s aching to leave the collective, and she may not be as sensible as we think she is.

Deep-Fried Artichokes and Other Healthy Foods

The best thing I’ve eaten so far in 2023 was a deep-fried globe artichoke. If you’ve never had one, a deep-fried artichoke is a glorious thing. If all vegetables tasted like this, few children would need to be coaxed to eat their greens. This artichoke made me think—and not for the first time—that our whole idea of healthy eating needs redefining. By February most people who started a New Year’s diet will have already abandoned it, and no wonder.
Bryan Johnson, a 45-year-old biotech CEO, has spent millions in his quest to reverse aging. He claims his biological age has been cut by 5 years with a strict regimen controlled by doctors. The Green Giant smoothie, which Bryan Johnson drinks every morning at around 5am. Intrusive measurements, including regular colonoscopiesA nurse performs a blood test for Bryan Johnson. But does that mean they've cracked the code on how to measure the "biological age" of a person accurately?

Kurtwood Smith played Red Forman on "That '70s Show" and reprised the role for "That '90s Show." Fans who recognize him will often come up and ask him to call them "a dumbass" just like Red would. The idea of Jackie and Fez together is pretty funny. I was a little insecure on the first episode of "That '70s Show," but I got some pretty good laughs out of it, and then it just continued on. I didn't necessarily think, "Oh, I'm pretty funny" — we had great writers on that show, and we have great writers on "That '90s Show."
Pompeo said Trump floated the idea of him serving as secretary of state and defense secretary, per his new memoir. In July 2020, Trump told Mark Meadows that he wanted his secretary of state to have a "dual hat," per Pompeo. Pompeo made the revelation as he explores a potential 2024 White House campaign against his ex-boss. According to Pompeo's book, Trump told Meadows that Esper was "not going to make it" for much longer while helming the Defense Department. That July, Trump told Meadows that he wanted his secretary of state to have a "dual hat" and "take on leading the department of defense as an additional duty," per Pompeo.
LOS ANGELES, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Comedian Eddie Murphy will accept a lifetime achievement honor next month at the Golden Globes, the annual ceremony that is trying to restore its reputation in Hollywood after a diversity and ethics scandal. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that votes on the Globe winners, announced on Wednesday that Murphy would receive the Cecil B. DeMille award to celebrate his contributions to entertainment. Previous DeMille award recipients have included Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Sophia Loren, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro. The honor for Murphy adds a big name to the Globes telecast on Jan. 10. The Globes were tainted after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation probed the HFPA's practices and revealed the organization had no Black members.
CNN —Eddie Murphy will be honored with this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards in January. Murphy, who has previously won a Golden Globe, is also a six-time nominee. “We’re honored to present this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award to the iconic and highly esteemed Mr. Eddie Murphy,” HFPA President, Helen Hoehne said in a statement. “The Banshees of Inisherin” led among film nominees announced Monday by the Golden Globes with eight nominations. The ceremony, which was not broadcast last January over controversy surrounding the HFPA, will return to NBC on Jan. 10.
