As book rollouts go, the one for Omid Scobie’s latest offering about the British royal family, “Endgame,” has been a hot mess — splashy, gaudy, tantalizing but ultimately a bit withholding — which is to say, par for the course for a putative tell-all account of the world’s most covered, least decoded family. The withholding part involves an unconfirmed, thoroughly radioactive nugget that turned up in the Dutch edition of Mr. Scobie’s book, published on Tuesday: the identity of two members of the royal family who once reportedly expressed concerns about the skin color of the unborn child of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan. Mr. Scobie’s Dutch publisher, Xander, quickly withdrew the book from shelves and online sites in the Netherlands at the behest of the author and his agent, citing an unspecified “mistake” that it said would be corrected in time for the book to go back on sale on Dec. 8. The family members are not identified in either the British or American editions, which were published by imprints of HarperCollins. It all led to a nursery school’s worth of peekaboo headlines in London tabloids on Wednesday.

Hard Rock posted a gross operating profit of $44.3 million in the third quarter, up less than 1% from a year earlier. Gross operating profit reflects earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and other expenses, and is a widely accepted measure of profitability in the Atlantic City casino industry. “In keeping with the experiences of many resort communities along the New Jersey shore, Atlantic City saw a bit of a cooling off in summer 2023 compared to the pent-up post-pandemic energy seen in 2021 and 2022, said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City casino industry. ”That said, it did outperform pre-pandemic 2019 for both net revenue and gross operating profit, suggesting that this could be part of a cycle of stabilization." The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped nearly 500 points after the closely watched consumer price index (CPI) reading for October came in flat, softer than economists' estimate of 0.1% growth month over month. Wall Street took the news as a sign that inflation was coming down enough for the central bank to stop raising interest rates. Barring a surprise rebound in inflation, rates seem to have peaked and the "soft landing" for the economy is still in play. (AP) — Five Atlantic City casinos and a horse racing track are forfeiting over $77,000 worth of money won by underage gamblers or those who had placed themselves on a list to be excluded from gambling activities. The forfeited money will go to the state to be used for programs to treat compulsive gambling, as well as on programs benefiting senior citizens and those with disabilities. The Ocean Casino Resort forfeited over $7,500; Bally's forfeited over $5,600; Freehold Raceway forfeited over $4,400; the Golden Nugget forfeited over $4,200; and Harrah's forfeited nearly $900. Collectively, they have won more than $4.2 billion from gamblers through the first nine months of this year. But they do indicate ongoing enforcement of regulations by which all casinos and gambling operations must operate.

DraftKings edged out rival FanDuel for the largest portion of online gambling market share in the US, according to a Wednesday report from the market research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming. DraftKings had amassed about 31% of online gambling gross gaming revenue in the third quarter through August 23, while FanDuel's market-share lead had dipped to 30%. But DraftKings' share has steadily grown steadily since, per the report. FanDuel, meanwhile, has fallen from a Q1 2023 peak of 37% online gambling share.

The fast food chain's Indonesian social media account this week announced that it will begin offering catering for couples who are tying the knot. The "Wedding Mekdi" package includes 100 chicken sandwiches and 100 four-piece chicken McNuggets orders, the company revealed in an Instagram post that includes imagery of both menu items as well as a bouquet of flowers and a pair of gold wedding bands. Still, Knot warned that it could still take some time before inflation, at 6.1% in May, is fully under control. "Because inflation was high for a long period, underlying inflationary pressures have built up," Knot said in a speech. The ECB's consumer expectations survey also included a new nugget that could support arguments for more cautious policy tightening.
