However, Russia's birth rate remains dismal, prompting a politician to suggest that the country launch a "special demographic operation." Russia's birth rate was 8.3 per 1,000 people for the first half of this year — down from 10 per 1,000 people in 2019. The latest data from the US showed the country's birth rate was 11 per 1,000 people in 2022. The group released the survey last week with two nonprofit organizations, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Civic Empowerment Education Fund and Asian American Futures. The survey authors interviewed 1,253 Asian Americans across six of the largest Asian ethnic groups in California. Ramakrishnan said the results are relatively consistent with Asian American voters in the past. Still, there continues to be a misconception that appealing to Asian Americans, which often requires multilingual outreach, is too expensive, Ramakrishnan said. But hiring more Asian Americans on campaigns could help solve that issue.

Tropical Storm Francine is expected to strengthen to a hurricane by midweek when it reaches the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm started as a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico and strengthened into a tropical storm Monday. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had predicted above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year, forecasting 17 to 25 total named storms — which is defined as having winds of 39 mph or higher — with eight to 13 forecast to become hurricanes. The above-normal activity was forecast because of near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, La Niña conditions in the Pacific, reduced Atlantic trade winds and less wind shear.

Now, the Justice Department is alleging that some of the biggest stars in right-wing social media were, unwittingly, part of a sinister Russian operation to influence the 2024 US election. What is Tenet Media? “Overt shilling”The Russians also pushed Tenet to promote videos that were going viral on social media, according to the indictment. Tenet Media has not responded to requests for comment and stopped posting content on Wednesday. After the 2016 US presidential election, congressional and federal investigations showed Moscow had successfully co-opted unwitting Americans to stage protests, run social media accounts and host events at its behest.

The Summary Despite high ocean temperatures, hurricane season has hit a lull. The Gulf of Mexico is blazing hot, but hurricane season — temporarily, at least — has hit a lull, a surprise to researchers who see plenty of ingredients brewing in the Atlantic but no storms on the radar. Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Hurricane scientists predicted a record hurricane season this year, and it got off to a record-setting start when Hurricane Beryl became the first Category 4 storm to form in the Atlantic Ocean in June. The unofficial peak of hurricane season is Sept. 10.

CNN —Turkey’s understated Olympian Yusuf Dikeç went viral for his nonchalant stance while competing in the air pistol mixed team competition event last week. Now, it appears Dikeç’s “insane aura” has inspired a new celebration that has spread across this year’s Games. With the eyes of the world watching his celebrations, Duplantis appeared to mimic Dikeç’s cold stance – hand in a make-shift pocket and an outstretched arm holding an imaginary gun. “Congratulations Duplantis,” Dikeç wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday, alongside a photo of Duplantis’ celebration. Dikeç has shared images of athletes copying his stance on his social media platforms, which have garnered many more followers since he competed in Paris.

Young people, especially women, are increasingly talking on social media about gastrointestinal distress, such as irritable bowel syndrome or chronic bloating. Some experts say that’s mostly a good thing, because it may help others seek help for a topic that has been taboo. Here’s what else medical professionals suggest you do if you’re experiencing digestive discomfort. Why are more young people talking about digestive problems so much? Food sensitivities can trigger IBS symptoms, so adjusting your diet and exercising more also may make a difference.

BEIJING — Eastern China is baking under unseasonably high temperatures, with the excessive heat expected to linger in mega coastal cities in the highly industrialized provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang for up to 10 more days. In the east and northwest of China, temperatures as high as 43.9 degrees Celsius (111.02 degrees Fahrenheit) have scorched Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Anhui and Xinjiang in recent days, state broadcaster CCTV said. The city of 12.5 million people is expected to swelter under temperatures exceeding 104F through Sunday. Jiangsu’s observatory issued a red warning for heat on Sunday after high temperatures that had persisted for more than a week further intensified. Hangzhou is expected to see 10 straight days of above 104F weather, breaking its record of eight days in 2013.

Suni Lee held down the fort as the only American in Sunday's uneven bars final, earning a bronze and successfully defending her podium finish in Tokyo. Lee had very specific goals in mind for her Olympic encore: a team gold medal, an all-around podium finish, a bars medal and a gold medal on the balance beam. Her gold is the country's first Olympic medal in gymnastics and the first Olympic gymnastics medal for an African nation. The conflict involved contentions over where the uneven bars prodigy would train and allegations that Nemour’s coach was overworking the 17-year-old. Lee and Simone Biles will contend for a beam medal Monday, which is the final day of gymnastics in Paris.

Buttigieg isn’t the only politician to exit a Democratic presidential primary with an enduring army of online super fans. “Team Pete” didn’t disappear, but the “veepstakes” reactivated his supporters, said Mike Schmuhl, Buttigieg’s 2020 campaign manager. They reject the idea that America isn’t ready for a major-party ticket featuring both a Black woman and the first out gay vice presidential pick. “I definitely think in my lifetime he will be on a ticket,” said Brandon Neal, a Democratic strategist and senior adviser to the 2020 campaign.

Can Gouda’s Cheesemakers Stall a Sinking Future?

On a recent morning in Gouda, a small city in the Netherlands, hundreds of wheels of yellow cheese lay out in rows on the cobblestones of the town square, a backdrop to the city’s weekly cheese market, which dates to the Middle Ages. Ad van Kluijve, a farmer dressed in blue work shirt, red bandanna, blue cap and wooden clogs, haggled with a buyer over the price of his latest batch of “jong belegen,” famous for its mild caramel flavor. In the rest of the world, it is one of many cheeses named after the city in which it is traded. The haggling is largely a performance for tourists as the actual price negotiations take place elsewhere. The cheese industry in the region is very real, though, accounting for about 60 percent of the national cheese production, with an export value of $1.7 billion annually, according to ZuivelNL, which represents the Dutch dairy sector.
