After a tour boat capsized in a tunnellike cavern in western New York this week, killing a man and injuring nearly a dozen others, officials said they were investigating when the boat had last been inspected. The 300-foot canal in the dimly lit cavern, the Lockport Cave in Lockport, N.Y., is privately owned and is not a navigable body of water. As such, the narrow, flat-bottomed boat that was carrying 28 people on Monday operated in a regulatory limbo, officials said. Kathy Hochul directed her administration to “look at all possible ways to prevent future tragedies,” a spokesman said on Tuesday. But the governor’s spokesman, Matt Janiszewski, said that no state agency has jurisdiction over vessels in nonpublic, nonnavigable waterways.

When he brushed his teeth, for instance, he sometimes noticed a peculiar smell coming through the drain. It seemed like his 8-year-old son’s asthma was getting worse, and his pregnant girlfriend was having occasional nosebleeds and headaches. And a couple of months ago, when he replaced a sump pump in the basement, it was covered in a thick tar-like substance. “It was just black,” he recalled. But none of these things struck him as too suspicious until he realized what was underneath the large, empty swath of grass, sealed off by a tall chain-link fence, just two blocks from his front door.

One person died and more than a dozen others had to be rescued after a tour boat capsized Monday morning while carrying passengers through an underground cavern in western New York, prompting an all-out rescue effort, officials said. Twenty-nine people were on board when the boat tipped over at the Lockport Cave in Lockport, N.Y., Luca Quagliano, Lockport’s fire chief, said at a news conference. Emergency workers rescued 16 people from the water, Chief Quagliano said; the rest were able to get to safety on their own. In addition to the person who died, eleven people were hospitalized with minor injuries after being pulled from the water, Chief Quagliano said. The city’s police and fire departments and other public safety agencies immediately began rescue efforts, officials said.

In 1969, the US Army Corps of Engineers dumped 27,000 tons of rock to dam the Niagara River and stop the American Falls. They were assessing a growing pile of boulders at the bottom out of concern the falls could become rapids. But in the end, engineers found the boulders were necessary to prop up the face of the falls. Engineers had blocked it off so they could examine the boulders at the base of the falls and see whether they could be removed. Here's why, after 12,000 years, the famous falls were "turned off."

The author rides in business class on trains in Canada (L) and Italy (R). Later that week, I took a 6-hour Via Rail business-class ride in Canada from Toronto to Montréal. Two months later, I took a 4-hour Trenitalia business-class ride in Italy from Venice to Rome during a two-week train trip through Europe. So, I decided to compare my train trips in Canada and Italy to figure out which country offered the best business-class experience.
He remains on a ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU) at University of Cincinnati Medical Center to assist his breathing. The physicians said Hamlin had asked who won the game between the Bills and the Bengals. The response: "Damar, you won - you won the game of life," Dr. Timothy Pritts said. They said it was too soon to say whether the hit he took on the field or a preexisting condition caused Hamlin to go into cardiac arrest. The doctors credited the Bills' medical staff for quickly recognizing that Hamlin had no pulse and promptly administering Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
New York just became the first state to ban certain types of cryptocurrency mining in an effort to address environmental worries over the energy-intensive process. The new law temporarily freezes the issuance and renewal of air permits to companies that have transformed some of the state's oldest fossil fuel plants into cryptocurrency mining hubs. Mining crypto can produce harmful emissions by generating electricity through burning coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels. However, as companies flocked to the region, climate advocates began ringing the alarm over crypto mining's potential environmental harm. On a national level, U.S. crypto mining produced about 25 to 50 million metric tons of carbon pollution according to a White House report.

But protocols failed to match reality at the Niagara Falls plant, according to more than a dozen workers. In addition to those signature diseases, which are rare even among asbestos workers, the tiny strands can harm the body in other ways. In the 15 years that followed, congressional attempts to ban asbestos would continue to fall short. OSHA declined to make an official available for an on-the-record interview or comment on ProPublica's findings at the Niagara Falls plant. At the OxyChem plant in Wichita, union president Keith Peacock said he was comfortable with the way asbestos was handled.
A sentimental card or letter can smooth over the transactional rough edges of a cash gift. If you’re sending money electronically, it’s great to note in the card the method by which you’ve sent money: “Check your Venmo for the gift that accompanies this card UNLESS YOU HATE MONEY,” or similar phrasing of your choice. Don’t even give them a gift card, which limits where they can redeem it and adds the pressure of an expiration date. And even if you feel annoyed by an overt request for a monetary gift, don’t decide to opt out with the gift of nothing. If you’d like to receive cashEmbrace transparencyMaybe people used to pretend they didn’t need money or that gifts didn’t…cost money, but those days are happily behind us.

“Fifteen days to slow the spread” and “flatten the curve” may have something to do with it. Real scientists, like Michael Faraday (1791-1867), whose birthday is this week, would be rolling their eyes. Well, if there was no Faraday, there would be no modern economy. Moving a loop of wires around a fixed magnet can induce electricity. Place a dynamo next to running water, like Niagara Falls, and you can generate reliable electricity.
