Utility stocks are an affordable way to gain exposure to the artificial intelligence trend and hedge against a slowing economy even after the sector's recent rally, according to Goldman Sachs. Yet, utility stocks still remain relatively affordable. Goldman is forecasting above consensus earnings growth of 2% on average in 2026 for the 16 utility stocks it covers. NextEra , Xcel Energy , Sempra and Southern Company offer the best exposure to the data center power demand surge among Goldman's buy-rated stocks, according to the bank. "However, a return to a rising bond yield environment could weigh on the performance of utilities," the Goldman analysts said.

The Big Tech earnings next week could revive a flagging market, or at least give investors direction into where stocks are going from here. Wall Street is hoping next week's megacap tech results will give investors insight into where the artificial intelligence trade is going from here, as a bounce in tech could lift the indexes. They're also hoping a slew consumer commentary will give investors insight into the state of the economy. CFRA's Sam Stovall anticipates the stock market can go higher even without rate cuts, but has the playbook to navigate a possible correction if one develops. The chief investment strategist expects the S & P 500 still has further upside. But he sees a bumpy road ahead, anticipating a consolidation of about 8% to 10% after the market's recent gains. "As a result, I think there is, after we get through this much-anticipated correction that history says is overdue, I think we do end up being higher by year-end," Stovall said. Former President Donald J. Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination, has repeatedly attacked central elements of the Inflation Reduction Act, including tax credits for purchasing electric vehicles. “Otherwise it’s all going to be on the chopping block.”The Inflation Reduction Act contains various tax credits and other subsidies to incentivize companies to deploy more clean energy projects. It also includes tax breaks for consumers to offset the cost of electric vehicles, heat pumps and other energy-efficient appliances. That could cut the number of eligible vehicles, potentially hindering progress toward the Biden administration’s goal of having electric vehicles make up half of new car sales by 2030. The estimated cost of the Inflation Reduction Act’s energy incentives has effectively doubled since it passed, largely because forecasters believe the legislation will be more popular than they originally expected.

While demand for artificial intelligence applications is seeing rapid growth, several non-tech companies are well-positioned to benefit directly from the AI boom over the next few years, according to Scotiabank. This is because although GPUs, the specialized chips that power AI applications, are more efficient, they consume more than twice as much electricity to operate compared to non-AI chips such as CPUs. The Scotiabank analysts named six stocks that they think are well-positioned to capitalize on surging demand for data centers and renewable energy from AI applications. Meanwhile, earlier this week, fellow data center firm Equinix launched a new cloud service that will allow companies to manage their Nvidia AI supercomputing infrastructure to build AI applications. Due to their massive, power-hungry data centers, Scotiabank noted that the tech companies are the largest corporate consumers of renewable power.
