CNN —After a bumpy start to the weekend, the Las Vegas Grand Prix eventually lived up to much of the pre-race hype. Max Verstappen was initially critical of the spectacle, but later changed his tune to don an Elvis-themed suit. F1 was returning to Las Vegas for the first time in more than 40 years, with the new street circuit featuring the city’s iconic Strip. Celebrities, including Usain Bolt, were out in force in Las Vegas. Lewis Hamilton said the race proved doubters wrong.

Arm IPO to put SoftBank's AI hard sell to the test

A smartphone with a displayed Arm Ltd logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. The billionaire also said he has spent months creating hundreds of inventions with AI-powered ChatGPT that he believes can be realised through Arm. Analysts also caution that Arm does not sit at the centre of the AI boom but is more AI-adjacent. Nvidia has developed a "superchip" for use in data centres - the GH200, which contains CPUs based on Arm architecture. Many SoftBank portfolio companies will embrace and apply generative AI but that does not make them AI companies," said Victor Galliano of Galliano's Latin Notes, who publishes on Smartkarma.

Elon Musk has loaded up on Nvidia GPUs for X, xAI, and Tesla. Meanwhile, Chinese tech titans are reportedly scrambling to buy $5 billion worth of the chips. But there are signs emerging that there may not be enough of Nvidia's chips to go around, with multiple top executives warning that demand is massively outpacing supply. Soaring demandThe massive increase in interest in artificial intelligence has been a key factor driving demand for Nvidia's semiconductors. Perhaps the strongest sign that demand for Nvidia's chips is soaring came in May, when it released stellar second-quarter revenue forecasts that smashed Wall Street's expectations by 50%.

Dish Network enters dangerous financial orbit
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( Robert Cyran | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
Billionaire Charlie Ergen staked Dish Network’s (DISH.O) future on wireless spectrum, a decision looking worse by the day. The satellite operator has spent some $25 billion since 2008 acquiring the finite resource used to carry data. In January, Dish issued $1.5 billion of senior notes, secured by spectrum, with an 11.75% coupon. The satellite operator said on July 17 that its 5G network covered nearly three-quarters of the U.S. population. Dish must meet additional thresholds in 2025 or it could face up to $2.2 billion in fines and might be forced to forfeit wireless spectrum.

Green pipes in the Neighbourhood Energy Utility energy center divert sewage to heat pumps. Data centers can heat homes tooAcross the ocean, Stockholm is tapping into a major heat source: data centers. They found that in about 25% of those places there was enough heat underground to recycle for energy. Benz says it's worth considering adding those underground pipes as part of new construction, especially building new streets, which absorb extra heat. Of course, underground heat builds up the most in summer, when people don't need to heat their homes.
