AdvertisementI've never experienced a company holiday party like it since. (When I asked how many holiday parties he booked in a typical season, he said only "many.") "It was a late night, and I've never experienced a company holiday party like it since." Hadley said the Christmas-specific focus of many company holiday parties could be alienating to workers who follow non-Christian religious traditions. Well-planned company holiday parties, on the other hand, can be a boon to employees' overall work experience and even strengthen company culture.

AdvertisementOfficials reportedly found bullet casings with the words "deny," "defend," and "depose" on them at Brian Thompson's murder scene. The words are similar to the title of a 2010 book about the insurance industry, "Delay Deny Defend." Multiple news outlets said that the shell cases found at the scene were inscribed with the words "deny," "defend," and "depose." A major part of this shift occurred when insurance companies, including Allstate in 1992, hired consulting giant McKinsey & Company, he said. The insurance companies started using computer systems to estimate the amounts to be paid and deterring claimants from hiring lawyers, he said.

CNN —Ancient ancestors of Native Americans, known as the Clovis people, mostly ate mammoths and other large animals during the most recent ice age, according to a new study. Since the young boy was still nursing, the team of scientists from American and Canadian universities were able to infer his mother’s diet. A woolly mammoth model is seen during installation at the American Museum of Natural History in October 2023. They also compared it to other omnivores and carnivores, finding that her diet was most similar to a scimitar cat that primarily hunted mammoths. “The largest mammoth sites in the USA and Central Europe contain the remains of mainly younger animals… possibly the easiest to kill,” Haynes said.

I decided to pit these two discount giants against each other for the holiday season by comparing their offerings for holiday decorations.

It's also rolling out a policy to allow parents to sacrifice salary in exchange for shorter days. As Japan grapples with a record-low fertility rate, Toyko's government is trying new strategies to try to encourage women to have more children. Japan's fertility rate sank to a record low of 1.2 in 2023, far below the global replacement rate of about 2.1. Meanwhile, other Asian countries grappling with similar declines in marriage and fertility rates have introduced their own creative methods to try to help single people find a match.

The Summary Global temperatures in the last two years have been even higher than climate scientists expected. A new study offers a possible reason why: Cloud cover has decreased. If the reductions in low cloud cover aren’t a result of chance, it likely means Earth is warming even faster than scientists thought. One option is that a natural process is temporarily diverging from normal, causing a reduction in cloud cover. Still, many questions remain, said Zeke Hausfather, the climate research lead at the finance company Stripe and a research scientist at Berkeley Earth.

LONDON — The world is entering a “third nuclear age,” the head of the British armed forces has warned, with world-ending weapons once again spreading globally and international agreements to control them collapsing. He also cited China’s rapid development to become the world’s second fully-fledged nuclear competitor to the United States, alongside Russia. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us,” Radakin said. Last year, Russia suspended its participation from New START, an agreement that sought to put verifiable limits on Washington’s and Moscow’s nuclear arsenals. And in 2019, then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, Treaty, accusing Russia of violating the agreement.

To be more specific, the rapid surge in warming was supercharged by a dearth of low-lying clouds over the oceans, according to the research — findings which may have alarming implications for future warming. Low clouds also feed into this effect as they reflect away sunlight. If this is happening, future warming projections may be underestimated and “we should expect rather intense warming in the future,” Goessling said. But figuring out how clouds will respond to global warming is key, Zalkina said. “It literally determines how much future warming is in store.”

Exposure to lead in gasoline during childhood resulted in many millions of excess cases of psychiatric disorders over the last 75 years, a new study estimates. According to the findings, the national population experienced an estimated 151 million excess mental health disorders attributable to exposure to lead from car exhaust during children’s early development. Lead-associated mental health and personality differences were most pronounced for people born between 1966 and 1986, according to the study. The groups born around 1940 and 2015 had the lowest lead exposure and lead-associated mental illness, the study reported. Blood lead levels have gone way down, but they could go down further,” he said.

Archaeologists found 32 needle fragments made from animal bone buried almost 15 feet (nearly 5 meters) underground at the La Prele site in Converse County. The eyed needle above, made from the bone of a red fox, was found at the La Prele archaeological site in Wyoming’s Converse County. CNN —Eating at least five tiny servings of dark chocolate each week may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21%, according to a new observational study. The study found eating milk chocolate was linked to excessive weight gain over time, a key contributor to the development of type 2 diabetes. Researchers then looked at dark chocolate, milk chocolate and total chocolate consumption among over 111,000 chocolate aficionados. However, when the types of chocolate were factored in, the data showed no significant reduction in diabetes risk when consuming milk chocolate. “For anyone who loves chocolate,” Liu said, “this is a reminder that making small choices, like choosing dark chocolate over milk chocolate, can make a positive difference to their health.”

Short bursts of movement throughout the day — no matter how small — can help the heart, especially for women, research published Tuesday found. On average, men in the study did 11 short bursts of vigorous activity during the day, some which lasted less than a minute, and women did about nine. Vigorous activity meant it was high intensity, said Emmanuel Stamatakis, a professor of physical activity, lifestyle and population health at the University of Sydney, who led the study. Women who got just under 3.5 minutes of vigorous movement a day, however, were found to have a 45% lower risk of any of the heart problems than women who didn’t log any vigorous movement throughout the day. Getting about 5.5 minutes of vigorous movement per day reduced their risk of a major heart problem by 16%.
