CNN —Two former high-ranking Syrian intelligence officials have been charged with war crimes for allegedly torturing Americans and other civilians who were deemed enemies by the Syrian government and held in a military prison, the Department of Justice said Monday. They were charged with conspiracy to commit war crimes through cruel and inhuman treatment, according to an unsealed indictment filed in federal court in Chicago. Warrants for their arrests have been issued, and they remain at large, the Justice Department said. “The Justice Department has a long memory, and we will never stop working to find and bring to justice those who tortured Americans,” he said. “Hassan and Mahmoud allegedly oversaw the systematic use of cruel and inhumane treatment on perceived enemies of the Syrian regime, including American citizens,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray.

“The litany of things that will start to topple is profound,” said James Hodge, a public health law expert at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. “One in 3,000 kids who gets measles is going to die. The U.S. has seen 16 measles outbreaks this year — 89% of cases are in unvaccinated people — and a whooping cough epidemic is the worst since 2012. “If you overturn the administrative state, the impact on public health will be long-term and serious,” said Dorit Reiss, a professor at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law. It would take years before enough children died before people said, ‘I guess measles is a bad thing,’” she said.

So when a customer offered him $500,000 to buy the company, seemingly out of nowhere, the "transformative" offer stopped him dead in his tracks, he says. Today, Gecko is valued at $633 million, as of a fundraising round last year. Its clients include the U.S. Navy and Air Force, and it ranked 42nd on the 2024 CNBC Disruptor 50 List in May. Loosararian "didn't even know who Y Combinator was at the time," he says, but the representatives convinced him to submit an application. Within months, Loosararian turned down another investment offer, from a "very renowned" billionaire investor that would've valued Gecko at $10 million, he says.

It was also the start of Jolani’s gradual transformation from the classic anti-West jihadist, to a more palatable revolutionary. Washington, D.C.'s attorney general sued Amazon on Wednesday, accusing the company of covertly depriving residents in certain ZIP codes in the nation's capital from access to Prime's high-speed delivery. "In the zip codes in question, there have been specific and targeted acts against drivers delivering Amazon packages. Data from the AG shows that before Amazon instituted the change, more than 72% of Prime packages in the two ZIP codes were delivered within two days of checkout. The ZIP codes in Schwalb's complaint are in areas with large Black populations, according to 2022 Census data based on its American Community Survey. According to Scwalb's complaint, Amazon never communicated the delivery exclusion to Prime members in the area.

watch now'Aftermath of the FAFSA fiasco'Experts had warned that problems with the new FAFSA would result in fewer students applying for financial aid and fewer students enrolling in college. "Freshman enrollment dropped by a dramatic 5% this fall in the aftermath of the FAFSA fiasco, reversing previous gains," said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz. Submitting a FAFSA is one of the best predictors of whether a high school senior will go on to college, according to the National College Attainment Network. "FAFSA completion and college enrollment move in the same direction — that relationship is pretty consistent," said Bill DeBaun, NCAN's senior director. As a result of changes to the financial aid application, more students now qualify for a Pell Grant, a type of aid awarded solely based on financial need.

Since the early months of the war in Gaza, Israeli forces have occupied a four-mile road, known as the Netzarim corridor, that bisects the enclave, to keep hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans from returning north. That has slowly grown into an 18-square-mile block of territory controlled by Israeli forces, according to the Israeli military and a New York Times analysis of satellite images and video footage. The buildup suggests a shift for Israel, which had largely avoided holding Gazan territory, creating a vacuum that has allowed Hamas to reassert control in some parts of Gaza. Israelis leaders have vowed to maintain security control in Gaza even after the war, without saying clearly what that might entail. Israeli military analysts say the increase in infrastructure along the Netzarim corridor might serve that purpose.

London CNN —Sex workers in Belgium are now entitled to formal employment contracts, which include sick pay and maternity leave, under a landmark law that went into effect Sunday. The new law requires the employers of sex workers to obtain a license from the government, Deltour told CNN. These laws made it “impossible to perform the job in a normal and safe way,” according to the Belgian Union of Sex Workers. That was a crucial step in protecting sex workers from violence, for example, but didn’t give them access to social security. “Sex workers deserve the same rights and freedoms as all workers, and this law is a world first moving us in that direction.”The new law, however, doesn’t cover all types of sex workers.

Warren Stephens, an investment banker and billionaire who donated to President-elect Donald J. Trump’s rivals before eventually supporting him in the 2024 race, was tapped as Mr. Trump’s ambassador to Britain on Monday. Mr. Trump and the alliance had a tense relationship at times over the course of his campaign. In 2016, Mr. Stephens, the chief executive of Stephens, Inc., an investment bank based in Little Rock, Ark., gave $2 million to a group dedicated to stop Mr. Trump from winning the Republican presidential nomination. During the most recent election cycle, he backed other Republican presidential candidates, including Asa Hutchinson, Chris Christie, Mike Pence and Nikki Haley. “The Syrian army will once again be victorious over these terrorist groups as in the past,” he added. In his first public comments released by the state news agency Saturday evening, Assad said Syria will continue to "defend its stability and territorial integrity against terrorists and their supporters." Iran’s support for Assad mirrors that of Russia, which helped to turn the tide of the war during 2016's battle for Aleppo between Syrian government forces and rebel fighters. The victory helped Assad to secure Assad's hold on strategic areas of Syria, with opposition factions and their foreign backers controlling areas on the periphery. The U.S., for its part, opposes Assad, opposes Russia, and opposes Iran, but has allied itself with Syrian Kurdish forces despite their fight against U.S.’ NATO allies Turkey.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is in line to lead the Department of Health and Human Services in the next Trump administration, is well-known for promoting conspiracy theories and vaccine skepticism in the United States. But Mr. Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, has also spent years working abroad to undermine policies that have been pillars of global health policy for a half-century, records show. He has done this by lending his celebrity, and the name of his nonprofit group, Children’s Health Defense, to a network of overseas chapters that sow distrust in vaccine safety and spread misinformation far and wide. He, his organizations and their officials have interfered with vaccination efforts, undermined sex education campaigns meant to stem the spread of AIDS in Africa, and railed against global organizations like the World Health Organization that are in charge of health initiatives.

BEIRUT — Islamist rebels breached neighborhoods in Syria’s second-largest city of Aleppo and clashed with government military forces after detonating two car bombs Friday. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, the monitoring organization, said fierce clashes were underway between the attacking insurgents and regime troops. Syrian armed forces were repelling attacks, the Syrian Defense ministry said Friday, adding government forces involved in combat operations were able to regain control over some areas. "Our armed forces have inflicted heavy losses on the attacking organizations, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries among the terrorists," Syria's general command of the army and armed forces said in a statement translated by NBC News. The Syrian civil war started in early 2011 with a wave of protests against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad.
