CNN —The 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final is set: Jasmine Paolini will battle Barbora Krejčíková for the right to lift the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time in either of their careers. Paolini has already made history by becoming the first Italian woman to make the Wimbledon final and is seeking her maiden grand slam title after falling short in the French Open final last month. Paolini recently went on a surprise run to the French Open final, upsetting former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals and defeating 17-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva in the semis. Coming into Wimbledon as the seventh seed this year, Paolini had never won a match on the lawns of SW19. On day eight of Wimbledon 2024, Elena Rybakina stepped up to her new billing, the ATP made a germy decision, and there was chaos on Court One. Elena Rybakina is one of three players left in the women’s field who has won a Grand Slam title before. Rybakina plays with a big serve and with flat power that keeps her ball low. More importantly, do we too often discount the data point of winning a tournament on grass the week before Wimbledon?

American Madison Keys wept on Court One at Wimbledon as a horrifically timed injury forced her to retire against Jasmine Paolini of Italy. The challenge stood, and the ball had clipped the line by about 4mm, putting Keys down 15-30. Had there been no challenge from Keys, Paolini would likely have challenged herself, but Keys played the ball back into the court, so the point would have been replayed instead of the American losing it. From 15-30, Paolini brought up a break point, and Keys missed a forehand wide while pivoting through the shot onto her left leg, which gave way. Paolini a French Open finalist, defeated by Iga Swiatek; Keys a US Open finalist in 2017, and a Slam semifinalist five more times.

CNN —Steve Bannon, a former Donald Trump White House strategist, is set to report to a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, on Monday to begin a four-month sentence for defying a congressional subpoena. ‘More powerful in prison’The MAGA media firebrand was keeping a busy schedule in the days before his prison sentence. “I’m going to be more powerful in prison than I am now,” Bannon said last week. Those in custody at Danbury can send emails without attachments, but they pass through a monitored system, on a delay. For now, though, Bannon is poised to go through an intake process on Monday that’s familiar to inmates at Danbury.

CNN —The Justice Department urged the Supreme Court on Wednesday to reject an effort by former Trump aide Steve Bannon to avoid prison while he appeals his contempt of Congress conviction. A federal judge ruled recently that Bannon must turn himself in by July 1 to begin serving a four-month sentence. Bannon, a conservative podcast host and former strategist for Donald Trump, asked the Supreme Court last week to pause his prison sentence. Bannon “responded to the subpoena with total noncompliance,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar told the court. Bannon is set to report to the low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, instead of a minimum-security prison camp he had sought.

Like many politicians with national ambitions, she has written a book about her life and her vision for the country. It’s called “True Gretch” (she told me that’s a play on the 1969 John Wayne classic “True Grit”). The book is coming out just as the presidential election is heating up, and she’s also raising her profile as a co-chair of Biden’s re-election campaign. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., at a hearing Thursday ordered former Trump White House aide Steve Bannon to report to jail by July 1 to begin serving a four-month sentence for his criminal contempt of Congress conviction. Outside of court, Schoen told reporters, "The decision has it wrong factually in many many ways, it's a horrible decision." Bannon told reporters Thursday, "I've got great lawyers, and we're gonna go all the way to the Supreme Court if we have to." It is possible that Bannon's jail sentence could be stayed by an order of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, or by the U.S. Supreme Court.

CNN —A federal judge on Thursday ordered Steve Bannon to report to prison by July 1, giving the former Donald Trump adviser a short window to get a higher court’s intervention. The federal judge presiding over the case, Carl Nichols, had initially paused the sentence while Bannon appealed the conviction. Last month, however, a DC Circuit Court of Appeals panel unanimously rejected several challenges Bannon made to the case, and prosecutors immediately asked Nichols to send Bannon to prison to begin serving his sentence. “We’re going to win at the Supreme Court,” he added. Navarro is currently serving a four-month prison sentence for his 2023 conviction.

Four years ago, Guo Wengui, a prominent Chinese property developer, announced the imminent end of Communist rule and the formation of the New Federal State of China. The setting wasn’t Beijing, or anywhere close to China, but a boat in New York Harbor. He was joined by Steve Bannon, the right-wing firebrand and former adviser to President Trump. Another Trump aide, Peter Navarro, would be declared the shadow government’s “international ambassador.”“From this day forward, the Communist Party is not the legal government of China!” he shouted in Mandarin. Now Christie, like Cohen, is a former Trump associate trying to take the former president down. Cohen is rare in the universe of Trump associates since he both turned on Trump and went to prison. Many of the other Trump aides and associates who faced jail eventually got pardons or clemency and still support the former president. While the show often hosts rappers and other celebrities on its four-hour chat-fest, it has also become an important stop for politicians who want to reach Charlamagne’s largely Black audience. Steve Bannon, former adviser to Donald Trump, arrives to federal court in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, March 16, 2022. A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the criminal contempt of Congress conviction of former Trump White House senior aide Steve Bannon for refusing to testify and provide documents to the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit makes it more likely that Bannon will soon have to begin serving a sentence of four months in jail for his conviction of two counts of contempt of Congress. But Bannon could ask the full judicial line-up of the D.C. He also could ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take an appeal of Friday's ruling.
