The legendary “doom fish” has returned to California. A long, ribbon-shaped oarfish, rarely seen and believed to signal disaster, has washed up on California’s shores for the second time this year. PhD candidate Alison Laferriere from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego discovered the nearly 10-foot-long oarfish on a beach in Encinitas, in southern California, last week. According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, oarfish are incredibly rare. Since 1901, only 21 oarfish have been documented washing up on California shores, according to the institution.

In 2023, Americans spent about $17.7 billion on out-of-home cold coffee including iced coffee, cold brew and frozen coffee drinks. Giants like Starbucks have played a major role in iced drinks taking share from more traditional hot coffee. 45% of coffee drinkers ages 18 to 24 said they had a cold coffee in the past day according to a survey conducted in July 2024 by the National Coffee Association. Cold coffee drinks are highly customizable, with syrups, toppings and cold foam incorporated into many of the popular offerings at major coffeehouse chains. Logan Thorpe, a fitness content creator and coach who described himself as someone who worked with Tippet’s fitness business, said Tippet’s body was discovered in his Turkish hotel room. He had suffered a heart attack, according to an Instagram story Thorpe posted to Tippet’s page. When reached for comment via Instagram, Thorpe directed NBC News to a post on Tippet’s page announcing his death. “He was such a beautiful soul and had such a positive impact on the world,” the Instagram post reads. In an Oct. 30 Instagram post, he wrote 30 life lessons he had learned in his 30 years.
