In theory, the more return you hope to earn from an investment, the more risk you'll have to take on. While most asset classes follow the risk/return rules, a couple notable outliers emerge. Commodities, despite being one of the jumpier asset classes, offer the weakest 20-year return at 0.73%. There are compelling cases to be made that, given their outsize performance, large stocks are overvalued compared with other asset classes, such as small-company and developed and emerging markets stocks, Stovall adds. For long-term investors, he says, "nibbling at small- and mid-cap stocks as well as international investments might be a good thing."

Leading fund manager Mark Costa operates in one of the toughest parts of global markets: the foreign small- and mid-cap value category. In the past decade, his Brandes International Small Cap Value Fund (BISAX) has outperformed 91% of its peers despite logging a modest 4.8% annual return in that span. Of the 11 years that Costa has co-managed the fund, 2023 is shaping up to be one of the best. His foreign-focused small-cap value fund is up 25.3% year-to-date compared to 6% for its index, which puts it in the top 3% of its category, according to Morningstar. The best opportunities Costa sees in Japan are in its regional banking and healthcare industries.

At a time when shifting geopolitical alliances are elevating India's strategic importance, such curbs add to the contradictions global investors have to negotiate as they hunt for viable alternatives to a slowing China. BUCHA, Ukraine — There is a line of tidy houses on Vokzalna Street, where crumbling homes once lined a roadway littered with burned-out Russian tanks. There are neat sidewalks and fresh pavement with blue and yellow bunting hanging overhead. And there are backhoes and bulldozers plowing across a construction site where a new home goods store will replace a previous one that was burned to the ground. More than a year after Ukrainian forces wrested back Bucha from Russian troops, the town has drawn international investment that has physically transformed it, and it has become a stopping point for delegations of foreign leaders who come through almost weekly. And yet behind the veneer of revitalization, the pain that suffused Bucha during its month of horror under Russian occupation still lingers.

International stocks have underperformed for over a decade, while US growth names took off. However, foreign companies have attractive relative valuations and earnings growth. Why foreign stocks are more than just a good dealAnyone bullish on international stocks will almost always point to their valuations relative to US companies. Investors can get downside protection in this uncertain environment by buying international stocks that are high quality and can generate their own growth, Deladerriere said. And in addition to their rising earnings growth, the fund manager noted that the two pay sizable dividends.

Disappointing results from Home Depot (HD.N), the largest U.S. home improvement chain, combined with weaker-than-expected retail sales data suggested consumer spending is losing some momentum as restrictive monetary policy dampens demand. However, a core measure of retail sales suggested the American consumer continues to bolster the economy. European shares ended lower as downbeat earnings and the U.S. retail sales data stoked worries about softer consumer spending. U.S. Treasury yields continued to rise on the heels of the retail sales data, suggesting that the Federal Reserve's efforts to toss cold water on the economy in order to rein in inflation has yet to take full effect.
