Washington, D.C.'s attorney general sued Amazon on Wednesday, accusing the company of covertly depriving residents in certain ZIP codes in the nation's capital from access to Prime's high-speed delivery. "In the zip codes in question, there have been specific and targeted acts against drivers delivering Amazon packages. Data from the AG shows that before Amazon instituted the change, more than 72% of Prime packages in the two ZIP codes were delivered within two days of checkout. The ZIP codes in Schwalb's complaint are in areas with large Black populations, according to 2022 Census data based on its American Community Survey. According to Scwalb's complaint, Amazon never communicated the delivery exclusion to Prime members in the area.

OpenAI partners with defense company Anduril

OpenAI and Anduril on Wednesday announced a partnership allowing the defense tech company to deploy advanced artificial intelligence systems for "national security missions." This fall, Palantir signed a new five-year, up to $100 million contract to expand U.S. military access to its Maven AI warfare program. OpenAI said it was working with Anduril to help human operators make decisions "to protect U.S. military personnel on the ground from unmanned drone attacks." The company said it stands by the policy in its mission statement of prohibiting use of its AI systems to harm others. The news comes after Microsoft -backed OpenAI in January quietly removed a ban on the military use of ChatGPT and its other AI tools, just as it had begun to work with the U.S. Department of Defense on AI tools, including open-source cybersecurity tools.

He had been widely expected to get the position as the nation's top financial market regulator. Atkins served as SEC commissioner from 2002-08, under then-President George W. Bush. The mission assigned to Pat Gelsinger when he took over Intel as CEO in 2021 was to restore the then 52-year-old company to relevancy. Its business of designing and manufacturing chips — once industry-leading — was struggling. "By the time Intel began to work on AI chips, it was too late, and the company had basically no market share." Its line of AI chips, known as Gaudi, has paled compared to offerings from competitors like Nvidia. An AI immigration dragnet vs. AI deregulation and growthRemaya Campbell, acting commissioner for Homeland Security for the District of Columbia, said that AI could automate immigration-related decision-making, bypassing traditional processes. "And in the Trump administration, that could certainly mean reinforcing intersectional biases to align with political priorities," she said. "Expectations are that a Trump administration would push for even more AI surveillance, potentially introducing autonomous patrols and expanding biometric screening," Sahota said. President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday he would pick Kash Patel, a 44-year-old loyalist with little significant experience in federal law enforcement, to serve as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Patel, who will have to earn Senate confirmation to become FBI director, has earned a reputation as the ultimate Trump loyalist who has spread baseless "deep state" conspiracy theories and called for a purge of perceived Trump enemies in the FBI. He's arguably the least qualified person ever nominated for a senior position in federal law enforcement," said a former senior law enforcement official who interacted with Patel. President-elect Donald Trump said he intends to nominate Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University professor known for his criticism of Covid lockdowns, to serve as the next director of the National Institutes of Health. In a statement Tuesday, Trump said, "Dr. Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to direct the Nation's Medical Research, and to make important discoveries that will improve Health and save lives." Bhattacharya gained national attention in October 2020, when he co-wrote the "Great Barrington Declaration," an open letter calling on public health officials to roll back Covid lockdowns. Several days after the Great Barrington Declaration came out, 80 researchers from the fields of public health, epidemiology and more published a joint letter in the medical journal The Lancet, calling the idea "a dangerous fallacy." Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization, called the proposal unethical.
