PHILADELPHIA — Vice President Kamala Harris will take questions from three members of the National Association of Black Journalists on Tuesday, six weeks after former President Donald Trump questioned her ethnicity and clashed with a journalist at the organization’s national convention in Chicago. But it is not an official campaign event, and it is open only to select NABJ members and 100 students from historically Black colleges and universities. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black,” Trump said, drawing gasps. “NABJ does not endorse political candidates as a journalism organization,” NABJ President Ken Lemon said in a statement last week. The interview with Vice President Harris is designed to inform the public and give our members access to help inform their reporting.

New York CNN —A Nevada judge has ruled that billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his family can hold a secret court battle over the future of his vast media empire behind closed doors. The judge rejected a petition by a coalition of media organizations, including CNN, The New York Times, NPR, the Washington Post, Reuters and ABC, to unseal the case and allow access. Though the Murdoch family is fighting over the trust and who will ultimately have control of the family businesses after the 93-year-old’s death, all of those involved agreed to sealing the case. But beyond that, everything in this case that it scheduled to begin next week with the Murdoch family likely in attendance, will remain sealed. Preston Padden, who worked closely with Rupert Murdoch to build Fox Broadcasting in the 1990s, blasted the family’s secrecy in the case.

Chinese scientists have discovered a “brand-new method” of producing large quantities of water using lunar soil brought back from a 2020 expedition, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Thursday. China hopes that recent and future lunar expeditions will set the foundations to build the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), an initiative it is co-leading with Russia. John Lansing, who as chief executive of NPR from 2019 until earlier this year guided the broadcasting organization through a global pandemic, an imploding media landscape and widening political polarization that called into question some of its journalistic principles, died on Aug. 14 at his home in Eagle River, Wis. An NPR representative confirmed the death but did not cite a cause. Mr. Lansing, who had been in the news business since he graduated from high school, arrived at NPR with a mission to broaden its reach beyond traditional radio into media like podcasts and newsletters. A new national NPR/PBS/Marist poll released Tuesday, before Harris made her pick, showed 71% of Americans saying they’ve never heard of Walz or don’t have an opinion of him. The legal saber rattling between the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike and Delta Air Lines over the global I.T. outage last month just ratcheted up a notch. The blame for Delta’s woes lies with the airline alone, the lawyers wrote. The letter was in response to Delta’s hiring of David Boies, a prominent litigator, and saying that it would seek damages over the outage, which it said cost it $500 million. Shares in both companies have plunged since the July 19 outage, with CrowdStrike down more than 35 percent.

NPR confirmed her death in an article, which did not say where she died. Ms. Jaffe had been living with metastatic breast cancer for several years. Often described by colleagues as a “reporter’s reporter,” Ms. Jaffe had a keen sense of the line separating the equitable and the unjust.
