‘AI’ is Collins Dictionary’s word of the year
  + stars: | 2023-11-01 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —Collins Dictionary has named “AI” as its word of the year, defining it as an “abbreviation for artificial intelligence: the modelling of human mental functions by computer programs.”“Considered to be the next great technological revolution, AI has seen rapid development and has been much talked about in 2023,” the UK-based dictionary publisher said in a statement announcing its decision. While AI’s capabilities in mimicking human speech fascinated people at first, they were also the source of some anxiety, according to Collins. “If computers were suddenly experts in that most human of domains, language, what next? Cue an explosion of debate, scrutiny, and prediction, and more than enough justification for Collins’ 2023 Word of the Year: AI,” the statement continues. The inaugural Global AI Summit on AI Safety got underway in the United Kingdom Wednesday.

Bankman-Fried's will be the first of Williams' blockbuster white collar cases to go to trial. The cases Williams, 43, has brought so far show he has been a "steward" of the SDNY's longstanding priorities, said Kan Nawaday, who overlapped with Williams at the office. Prosecutors had described the cases as the first insider trading cases brought involving digital assets. Williams' charges against Bankman-Fried came just one month after FTX's collapse, which former prosecutors say is very fast for a complex white collar case. A new study from Morgan Stanely makes the case that generative AI will enable people to work multiple jobs, writes Insider's Alistair Barr. In the US alone, multi-earning has increased 11% over the past year, largely thanks to the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. New research from EY found that nearly 40% of Gen Zers had a side hustle to earn extra money. Adding fuel to the fire is the fact bosses don't seem to care if their employees are working multiple jobs, albeit with one caveat. To be sure, executives' acceptance of employees working multiple jobs might be short-lived.

The ministry released a draft proposal to form a working group for the metaverse, shared virtual worlds accessible via the internet, on Monday. The proposal said that the metaverse is one of the nine emerging tech sectors which China should strive to establish standards for. "[The metaverse industry] faces many challenges," the MIIT said, "It is urgent to promote healthy and orderly development of the metaverse industry through standardization and guidance." It added that the metaverse industry suffers from a lack of clear definitions, which had allowed some capitalists and companies to drum up speculation in the market. GameStop’s success doesn’t belong in a meme
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Meme-stock success might look more whimper than bang. GameStop (GME.N), the poster-child for pandemic-era retail-trader enthusiasm, reported second-quarter results on Wednesday that showed losses narrowing and positive, if miniscule, adjusted EBITDA. It’s an improvement on the path to sustainability, especially compared to other retail darlings like bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond. Hardware sales fell 18% from the prior quarter, as the after-effects of supply shortages fade. GameStop’s share price may still be well above 2019 levels, but its ambitions are as low as ever.

On Monday, the SEC fined Impact Theory, a Los Angeles-based entertainment company, $6.1 million, alleging the NFTs sold by the company were unregistered crypto asset securities, per an August 28 press release. The SEC alleges Impact Theory told investors who purchased them that they would "profit from their purchases" if the company was successful down the road. Impact Theory reportedly raised about $30 million through its NFT sales. Impact Theory hasn't admitted or denied the SEC's allegations, but has agreed to a cease-and-desist order. The company will also destroy any remaining NFTs in its possession and return funds to investors who purchased NFTs, according to the SEC's press release.

Signage is seen at the headquarters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 12, 2021. The SEC said Impact Theory marketed its Founder's Keys--sold in "Legendary," "Heroic" and "Relentless" tiers--as a means to profit from its business by investing at an early stage. Impact Theory allegedly raised $29.9 million by selling 13,921 Founder's Keys in late 2021, and received $978,000 of royalties from secondary sales. The SEC said Impact Theory also compared its NFTs with "handing ($20) to Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room," referring to the billionaire Facebook co-founder. SEC commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda partially dissented from Monday's settlement, saying the regulator owed investors better guidance on NFTs.
