Republican senators who met Monday with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, brushed aside sexual assault and other allegations against him. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., called the allegations a “side issue” while lauding Hegseth’s ability to lead the Defense Department. Hegseth did not respond to shouted questions from NBC News about the New Yorker article and other allegations. Senators offered their full-throated support to Hegseth after the meeting, downplaying the accusations. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Republican senators' remarks.

A 30-year-old Hawaii woman at the center of a missing persons search in Los Angeles willfully crossed into Mexico, seemingly as part of her desire to "disconnect," police said Monday. He said that detectives can't say they're "100% right" about their determination but that they know she didn't have her phone after she left Los Angeles International Airport. That day, family members said, she sent messages that concerned them because of their content and a voice that didn't seem to match hers. McDonnell said Kobayashi was reported missing Nov. 13, but the LAPD took over the case on Nov. 15. WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Monday to approve the promotion of a general who oversaw troops during the U.S. withdrawal from Kabul, Afghanistan, after it had been blocked by a Republican senator aligned with President-elect Donald Trump. The Senate voted by unanimous consent, meaning all 100 senators agreed, to approve Army Lt. Gen. Christopher Donahue's promotion to four-star general to oversee U.S. Army forces in Europe. Sen Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., had blocked Donahue’s promotion, NBC News reported last month, citing a Senate aide. Donahue, who was commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Kabul withdrawal in 2021, was the subject of a viral photograph as the last soldier to board a U.S. military plane out of Afghanistan. An inspector general's report in 2022 found that decisions by both Biden and Trump contributed to the troubled exit from Afghanistan.

The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

An 88-year-old doctor accused of sexually assaulting Indiana University basketball players back in the 1990s has been ordered to appear before a judge Tuesday to determine whether he is competent to be questioned about the alleged abuse. Delaney named the Trustees of Indiana University as defendants in the lawsuit, alleging Title IX violations by the school for failing to protect the students. In response, Indiana University retained the Jones Day law firm to launch an independent investigation into the Bomba allegations. The doctor had played football for Indiana University and was nicknamed “Frankenstein” by coaches and players “due to the large size of his hands and fingers,” the lawsuit added. The accusations that IU turned a blind eye to allegations of a team doctor sexually abusing student-athletes echo another major scandal involving a team doctor.

Special counsel David Weiss's office on Monday appeared to push back on President Joe Biden's claim that its prosecutions of Hunter Biden were politically motivated, calling such allegations "baseless." The Court rejected that claim finding that '[a]s the Court stated at the hearing, Defendant filed his motion without any evidence.' It noted that Hunter Biden "made similar baseless accusations" in the Delaware case, which were rejected by that judge as well. Three appeals court panels also rejected Hunter Biden's arguments, the filing said. Hunter Biden had been scheduled to be sentenced in both cases later this month.

In the messy patchwork of conflicts raging across the Middle East, one country has been absent from the spotlight: Syria. That he has survived was largely because of the intervention of Russia, Iran and Hezbollah, Iran’s Lebanon-based proxy. In all, the U.N. has documented more than 350,000 deaths but says this is “certainly an undercount.”Today, however, Russia, Iran and Lebanon are distracted and depleted. All of this “puts Assad in a much weaker position.”But “the Syrian regime, in coordination with the Russians and less so the Iranians, will hit them with everything they’ve got,” he added. “Much as I oppose the Assad regime, its atrocities and abuses, what is happening in Aleppo right now is terrifying.
