TOKYO — Lawmakers in Japan voted Monday to retain the embattled Shigeru Ishiba as prime minister despite his long-governing party’s dismal showing in parliamentary elections last month. Ishiba, a straight-talking former defense minister, received 221 votes compared with 160 for Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party. Many Japanese officials assume Trump is going to be “more straightforwardly anti-China,” and that Japan will be “somehow miraculously left off the hook,” he said. Though Japan has already pledged to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product by 2027, “that’s probably not going to be enough to satisfy Trump,” Boling said. While Abe was “extraordinarily skillful” in dealing with Trump, Ishiba has a different personality, Boling said.

Here are four red flags to look for when choosing a financial professional, plus one green flag that an advisor could be a good fit, according to certified financial planners and advisors from across the U.S.Red flag No. 1: The financial advisor does most of the talkingIf a potential financial planner is doing most of the talking without letting you get a word in edgewise, it's a bad sign. Financial advisors who are also registered as investment advisors will have a public disclosure record with the SEC as well. In addition, you will also want to make sure that your financial advisor is certified in the way they claim. 4: You don't trust themOne red flag can't be found on a list or spreadsheet: lack of trust.

Here's why ETFs often have lower fees than mutual funds

Some experts say comparing average ETF fees to those of mutual funds isn't quite fair, because most ETFs have historically been index funds, not actively managed funds. To that point, index ETFs have a 0.44% average annual fee, half the 0.88% fee for index mutual funds, according to Morningstar. Similarly, active ETFs carry a 0.63% average fee, versus 1.02% for actively managed mutual funds, Morningstar data show. 'Cheap mutual funds also exist'ETFs and mutual funds are similar. While ETFs tend to be cheaper, on average, that's not to say mutual funds are always more expensive.

You may have a lot of noise in the short term, but for long-term investors, it’s always going to be all about valuation,” he said. The ETF industry is gearing up for some potentially seismic changes in 2025 and beyond. Policy changes from the SEC are hard to predict, but the ETF industry appears to sense an opening to push new types of products. Private credit funds One big area of focus for the ETF industry is how to tap into the private credit boom that has become a key part of the U.S. financial system. Fund issuers will need the SEC to bless new types of constructions in order to get a private credit fund approved. "For the most part, private credit is an investment that is limited to sophisticated investors and not retail investors," said Brian Murphy, a partner at law firm Stradley Ronon.
