India's EV market is small, with Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) dominating sales that made up less than 2% of all cars sold last fiscal year. All sources declined to be identified as the talks are still ongoing and a final decision has not been made. Founded in 2015, Leapmotor has less than 2% share of China's fragmented EV market, where it sells four mass market electric models. This has also forced MG Motor India to find local investors like JSW so it can raise equity. Leapmotor also has been in partnership talks with other major automakers, including Stellantis (STLAM.MI) and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), according to media reports.

SEOUL, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor's (005380.KS) unionised workers in South Korea on Friday vote on whether to hold a strike after two months of talks with the company over wage increase and extension of the retirement age stalled last week. If the union stages a strike, it would mark the first such action in five years related to wage negotiations at the South Korean carmaker, and could disrupt delivery of some popular vehicles which Hyundai has been struggling to ramp up due to prolonged component shortages. The voting result is expected at around 6 p.m. (0900 GMT), a union official at Hyundai Motor told Reuters, adding that the union will continue working-level negotiations with the management regardless of the vote. "South Korea has relatively low pension replacement rates, compared to other advanced countries in Europe. Unionised workers at Hyundai in South Korea held a four-hour strike for one day in July in support of its umbrella union's general strike, but it was not related to the union's wage negotiations with the management.

REUTERS/Phil Noble/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 21 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said Monday they are investigating whether Ford Motor's (F.N) 2022 recall of nearly 49,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles adequately addressed concerns. Ford issued the 2022 recall because high voltage battery main contactors may overheat from DC fast-charging and repeated wide-open pedal events, which could result in an immediate loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash. Following the recall, Ford issued a technical service bulletin to replace the High Voltage Battery Junction Box on recalled vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has opened a recall query after receiving 12 consumer complaints regarding Mach-E vehicles that received recall fixes.

BYD (002594.SZ) used an event this week to mark a production milestone to celebrate a bigger purpose: the emergence of China as a global auto manufacturing powerhouse. China's automakers are locked in a bruising price war that was started by Tesla (TSLA.O) in January and which shows no signs of easing. It ends with a call for China's automakers to "demolish the old legends and achieve new world-class brands," under the slogan, "Chinese Autos". said Li Xiang, CEO of Li Auto, who reposted the BYD video. In July, the industry group representing China's automakers retracted a pledge to avoid "abnormal pricing" brokered between 16 automakers, including BYD.

SHANGHAI/TOKYO, July 24 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor's (7203.T) joint venture (JV) in China said on Monday that it has terminated early the contracts of about 1,000 dispatch workers, in a sign of pressure on automakers from a price war in the world's largest auto market. Toyota's JV in China, Guangzhou Toyota Motor Co, said in a statement to Reuters that it had prematurely terminated contracts for about 1,000 workers with labour services companies in light of recent production levels. The GAC Toyota factory has an annual output capacity of 1 million vehicles and employs around 19,000 people, according to its website. The production of Mitsubishi's new Outlander model remained suspended, Kato added, describing the conditions faced by the company in China as "severe". BENGALURU, July 24 (Reuters) - India's TVS Motor (TVSM.NS) reported a bigger-than-expected rise in first-quarter profit on Monday, helped by strong demand for its two-wheelers, including its flagship electric scooter. The Apache motorbike maker reported a near 46% jump in profit to 4.68 billion rupees ($57.2 million) for the quarter ended June 30, beating analysts' average estimate of 4.36 billion rupees, according to Refinitiv IBES data. TVS Motor, which exports two-wheelers to Asia, Africa and America, said its revenue from operations rose 20.1% to 72.18 billion rupees. With electric vehicle (EV) adoption gaining momentum, consumers also picked up TVS Motor's electric scooters ahead of a reduction in government subsidies, effective June 1. Rival two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto (BAJA.NS) is scheduled to report results on July 25 while Hero MotoCorp (HROM.NS), the world's largest two-wheeler maker by sales, will report on Aug. 10.

WASHINGTON, June 24 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said on Saturday they are investigating Ford Motor's (F.N) prior recalls of 710,000 Explorer SUVs over power loss reports to determine if the fix is adequate. 2 U.S. automaker issued recalls in April 2022 and March on Ford Explorer SUVs from the 2020-2022 model years to address a rear axle horizontal mounting bolt that may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect. Ford said earlier its recalls were to address a disconnected driveshaft that could result in the vehicle rolling away placed in 'Park' without the parking brake applied, increasing the risk of a crash. NHTSA said it has received two complaints alleging a loss of power or transmission torque of the rear wheels in Explorer vehicles that had received the recall fix. One complaint told NHTSA that after getting the software update "the vehicle would randomly slam to a complete stop while driving.

DETROIT – Toyota Motor's stock is having its best week since 2009 following the company disclosing plans for its next-generation electric vehicles and shareholders voting in favor of its new leadership, including former CEO Akio Toyoda as chairman. If shares can retain their current momentum, it would be the stock's best week since April 2009 when they increased 14.5%. Ahead of its annual meeting Wednesday, Toyota outlined plans for a new generation of EVs to rival industry leaders Tesla and China-based BYD . The company said it plans to launch its next-generation EVs starting in 2026, including vehicles with highly touted "solid-state batteries" by 2027 or 2028. Solid-state batteries can be lighter, with greater energy density and provide more range at a lower cost than today's EVs with lithium-ion batteries.

Michael Wayland/CNBCDETROIT — Ford Motor's largest competition in electric vehicles isn't U.S. leader Tesla or crosstown rival General Motors — it's Chinese automakers, CEO Jim Farley said Thursday. Farley said Chinese companies such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD are ahead of the large U.S. automakers and startups on electric vehicles, specifically battery chemistry and other emerging technologies. And they were always committed to electric," Farley said when asked which company is doing EVs right. Farley's comments echo those of industry experts and investors regarding the growth of BYD and other Chinese automakers, which have government backing in China. Farley also noted BYD's battery advantages compared to the current U.S. industry standard of lithium-ion batteries.
MG Motor's hybrid eHS model is set to hit Mexico's streets on Friday, alongside two combustion-engine models, the company said. However, hybrid models could be a step forward until there is more EV investment, analysts have said. "For your day-to-day, you'll have the benefits of an electric vehicle," Daniel Nava, vice president of MG Motor in Mexico, told Reuters ahead of the announcement. Nava said the price in Mexico reflects that the model is a plug-in hybrid, which is more costly than other hybrid models, and is comparable to competitors' prices. Nava said MG Motor had been in touch with officials in Nuevo Leon as well as other states as it considered building a plant in the country.

Senator Marco Rubio on Thursday introduced legislation that takes aim at Ford Motor's (F.N) deal to use technology from Chinese battery company CATL (300750.SZ) as part of the automaker's plan to spend $3.5 billion to build a battery plant in Michigan. Rubio, the top Republican on the Intelligence Committee, introduced legislation that would block tax credits for electric vehicle batteries produced using Chinese technology, saying it would "significantly restrict the eligibility of IRA tax credits and prevent Chinese companies from benefiting." Last month, Rubio asked the Biden administration to review Ford's deal to use technology from CATL. Rubio called for an immediate Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) review of the licensing agreement between Ford and CATL. The $430 billion IRA imposes restrictions on battery sourcing and is designed to wean the United States off the Chinese supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs).
