As she listened to him describe the type of team he wanted to create, she realized she could be the one to do it. “I was like, ‘Ron, you know, I didn’t go to Wharton,’” Ellis said, referencing the business school at the University of Pennsylvania. One thing Ellis didn’t need to learn, though, is that the key to the franchise’s overall success would be wins on the field. For the Wave’s second signing, Ellis went with Alex Morgan, the face of American soccer. When it came time for Ellis to find a manager, she was committed to hiring a woman.

More than 4 in 5 say they did not increase emergency savings this year, according to a recent survey from Bankrate, and 60% say they feel behind when it comes to saving for a rainy day. That's why, in addition to your traditional emergency fund, some financial pros recommend building a so-called sunny day fund of money you can spend guilt-free or put toward exciting opportunities. What's more, consider the sorts of expenses your emergency fund could potentially cover to give yourself some piece of mind. "Another would be cash to cover living expenses during the disability waiting period, or elimination period." How a 'sunny day' fund can help you reach your goals

SAME BED DIFFERENT DREAMS, by Ed ParkJust after I’d registered for my first semester of college courses, I was meandering among a concourse of clubs and teams, fending off their grinning ambassadors, when a newspaper headline caught my eye: “U.S. Late in his lush, labyrinthine “Same Bed Different Dreams,” Ed Park recreates that moment, twisting the doomed flight’s number into a James Bond motif that resonates throughout the novel. CNN —Four-time NBA champion LeBron James is the latest male celebrity to be spotted out and about wearing a high-fashion bag. James arrived in Denver wearing a green Louis Vuitton Speedy bag. Jacob Elordi was seen this summer in an array of it bags, including this burgundy Valentino Loco bag. Indeed, men wearing bags are consistently the butt of jokes in internet memes, comic strips, and even stand-up comedy sets. Doubtless it’s a dedication appreciated by the likes of James, Elordi, A$AP and Tyler, whose street style looks contribute further proof — were any needed — that man purses are enjoying a newfound socio-cultural appreciation.

Think of your biggest investing success. Maybe it was a mega-sized company whose stock you bought when it was just a startup. There are many reasons why a particular trade might be your most successful, but when asked, investors identify one factor above all others. In a recent client survey conducted by Charles Schwab, 33% of investors attributed their greatest investing success to patience through volatility. KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — Key West’s Fantasy Fest began Friday, launching a 10-day schedule of masquerades, elaborate parties and costume competitions. Events are to culminate next Saturday night, when some 60,000 spectators are expected to line Key West’s downtown streets for the Fantasy Fest Parade, a procession of large-scale motorized floats, costumed marching groups and island-style dancers in colorful feathered attire. The festival has been notoriously famous for its decadent motif, but during the past few years, festival officials have focused their efforts on creative costuming and an effort to create more PG-rated events. The creators of the hit crime drama "Better Call Saul" on Monday won the dismissal of a defamation and trademark infringement lawsuit by Liberty Tax Service for depicting a shady fictional tax firm that appeared to resemble its own. Gardephe said Liberty Tax offered no "particularly compelling" allegations that viewers would be confused into thinking Sweet Liberty was one of its more than 2,500 offices. "Better Call Saul" starred Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman, a corrupt lawyer also known as Jimmy McGill. Peter Siachos, a lawyer for Liberty Tax, said his client will explore its legal options, including an appeal or refiling the lawsuit in a state court. Both said their use of Sweet Liberty was protected by the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment.

New York CNN —Even the unlimited breadsticks at Olive Garden and wooden rocking chairs at Cracker Barrel can’t seem to lure back the baby boomers. Now, some older customers are still staying away, exacerbating a foot traffic problem faced by restaurant chains. Darden Restaurants (DRI), which owns Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen and others, noted during an analyst call Thursday that it, too, is seeing declining visits from older customers. The largest of Darden’s franchises by far, Olive Garden is about “more and more and more,” as Cardenas said Thursday. For Cracker Barrel, which has also been trying to attract younger consumers but has traditionally appealed to an older clientele, the pullback from older customers is a bigger deal.

A 3D-scan of Barber's skull was combined with DNA analysis to estimate John Barber's features, shown here in an artist's illustration. The anise-flavored liquor is one of the oldest spirits in the world. He noted that it’s still common for Middle Eastern restaurants to stock European wines rather than traditional spirits like arak. He was experimenting to refine the production of al-kohl, a traditional form of eyeliner, according to Arak Muaddi, a Palestinian craft distillery. Nader Muaddi, the founder of Arak Muaddi, explained that producing arak starts with creating wine. The Middle East has “a very rich history of making wine and spirits, and it’s about time that we share it with the world,” Muaddi went on.

In a floor speech earlier on Wednesday, Schiff thanked his Republican colleagues for bringing the censure resolution, saying he stood "proudly" before them. GLASSWORKS, by Olivia Wolfgang-SmithI smashed a bottle while reading Olivia Wolfgang-Smith’s debut novel, “Glassworks.” I had the book in one hand and a container of hair oil in the other, and the bottle slipped, ricocheted off the sink and shattered. “Glassworks” is a panoramic family saga told in four novellas, each peering over the shoulder of the preceding generation. We follow Agnes in 1910; her son, Edward, in 1938; his daughter, Novak, in 1986; and Flip, the daughter of a woman Novak loves, in 2015. The book opens with Agnes Carter, a wealthy donor to a Boston university, who hires Ignace Novak, a naturalist and glassblower, to create scientific models. When Ignace is stung by a honeybee, the pair retrieve its squashed carcass and Agnes starts to draw it.

Lender Sberbank (SBER.MM) features the "Kandinsky 2.1" design tool on its website, with versions in Russian and English. Mironov said it appeared "Kandinsky 2.1" had been based on designs by "unfriendly states waging an informational and mental war" against Russia. "They will not know what the national flag of Russia looks like and will assume that Russia is a scientifically backward country," he wrote. Mironov said he had therefore written to Russia's prosecutor general to ask him to investigate Sberbank and whether the content produced by "Kandinsky 2.1" was lawful.
Still, he admitted, the loss was “bound up in the melancholy of youth.”This multivalence seemed to follow Hecker. He would spend his collegiate summers in the British Columbia wilderness, planting as many as 4,000 trees each day in clear-cut forests. Later, frustrated by the exigencies of starting a band, like remembering what they’d played the day before, Hecker began experimenting with drum machines and samplers. “The original impulse was this awe-struck excitement,” Hecker said, recalling his titanic computer tower, gargantuan monitor and pirated software. “There are different feelings in those different moments, and they each have their own ecosystem,” he said.
