CNN —Sometime during the Cretaceous Period, 125 million years ago, a feisty mammal the size of a domestic cat encountered a dinosaur three times its size and thought it looked like a tasty meal. “The inherited wisdom has been that the ecological interactions were unilateral: The bigger dinosaurs ate the smaller mammals. What makes this fossil exceptional is that the mammal is caught in the moment of attacking the almost fully grown dinosaur. Silvana Estrada: “Milagro y Desastre”I always appreciate Jon Pareles keeping an ear out for new artists from a vast variety of cultures and musical traditions. Usually known for her sparse, guitar-driven folk songs, “Milagro y Desastre” — miracle and disaster — is something new for Estrada: a song composed largely with looped, layered fragments of her own voice. (See also: her recent, charming cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.”) The cooed, percussive notes that provide the song’s rhythmic backbone remind me a bit of Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman,” but Estrada’s impassioned singing and distinct ear for melody ultimately take “Milagro y Desastre” somewhere unique. The MMA fighter Michael Chandler, pictured with his wife, Brie Willett, bought a $16 million property from Matt Onofrio in 2021. Then, in November 2022, federal prosecutors indicted Onofrio on charges involving three deals he'd arranged in Minnesota the year before. The federal complaint doesn't involve the property Onofrio sold to Chandler. Unbeknownst to Hermann, Onofrio had already tied up the warehouse in contract for $4.75 million. "Matt was finding a deal for $4 million and selling it for $5 million," Stageberg said.

MAKE WAY FOR A MOOSE A hiker in Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park yields the right-of-way on the Minong Ridge Trail. Photo: Jim West/imageBROKER/ShutterstockWITH THEIR mile-deep sandstone canyons, glacier-polished granite domes and herds of charismatic megafauna, it’s no wonder that America’s national parks received nearly 312-million visits in 2022. A staggering 25% of those visitors descended upon just nine of the Park Service’s 424 designated areas. Too often, these crowds funnel into narrow byways, creating headaches and traffic jams—and negating the very thing most parkgoers crave: solitude.

In March, on Day 7 of the Gwyneth Paltrow ski trial, after the court spectacle had already been branded everything from a “meme machine” to “the whitest trial of all time,” the retired optometrist Terry Sanderson sat in the witness box, somewhat deflated already. By that point, he probably knew that his pursuit of Paltrow for damages connected to a ski collision he said was her fault was a pretty bad idea. “This is a picture of you and your girlfriend, smiling big, right?”“Smile, camera, yup,” Sanderson replied. At a ski resort? As far as controversies go, the trial was as Diamond Life as you can get.

The sale is part of a trend of large companies struggling to integrate direct-to-consumer brands. Dick's Sporting Goods is buying outdoor retailer Moosejaw from Walmart, the company announced Wednesday. Walmart purchased Moosejaw in 2017 for about $51 million to bolster its outdoor and e-commerce offerings. That same year, the retail giant purchased another direct-to-consumer company, the apparel brand Bonobos. Integrating direct-to-consumer brands is often a challenge for big companies.

Deer Disease Threatens Herds Across the Country

Chronic wasting disease arises from pathogens that lead to brain damage in deer, elk and moose. During Missouri’s rifle-hunting season, state conservation officials in more than two dozen locations spend 12 hours a day removing and testing lymph nodes from the heads of deer carcasses brought in by hunters. They are looking for chronic wasting disease, a deadly and incurable condition on the rise across the country. “It’s a growing problem,” said Erin Shank, a biologist at the Missouri Department of Conservation. “It’s going one direction and it’s not the direction we want it to go.”
The UK government has promised to overhaul the youth gender care system, after it was deemed inadequate by England’s regulator of health and social care. They described a deeply flawed system that is now hobbled by a toxic political climate around gender care. The letter said a decision would be made at some point from early 2022 on whether the child “is likely to meet the access criteria” for gender care. The family has received no NHS gender care or mental health support since the referral, she said. These recommended supporting “identity exploration” and mental health treatment as the first steps to ensure that any psychological issues are addressed.
