CNN —A shiny metal likeness of England soccer captain Harry Kane has become the latest statue of a sports star to face criticism for failing to capture the essence of its subject. “A real proud moment for me to go back to where my life in football began and unveil a statue. The juxtaposition makes the differences between the real life Kane and his bronze likeness amusingly apparent, with many questioning whether Kane could truly be impressed by the work. Harry Kane next to his statue at the unveiling on Monday. As it turns out, this is not the only modern statue unveiled recently that has seemingly failed to live up to ancient standards.

LONDON — Britain’s King Richard III was immortalized with the Shakespeare line, “A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse.”Now state-of-the-art technology has revealed what it may have sounded like if he did indeed utter those words just before his death in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth. Just over 100 years later in 1592, Shakespeare vilified him as a hunchback, giving him the famous cry of despair about a horse as his last line. He was able to speak in public.”“Without the discovery of his mortal remains, this project would not have been possible,” she added. The skeleton also helped Morley-Chisholm find the actor that would eventually play the king’s avatar. “I think when people see it and hear it, then, you know, forget Richard.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged the country’s military to improve capabilities for fighting a war in a speech last week, state media KCNA said on Monday, after Pyongyang dispatched thousands of troops to Russia. The report came amid international criticism over rapidly developing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. Washington, Seoul and Kyiv have said there are more than 10,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia to support its war against Ukraine, and some of them have engaged in combat in Kursk, near the Ukraine border. Biden’s administration has allowed Ukraine to use U.S.-made weapons to strike deep into Russia, sources told NBC News, marking a significant policy reversal and a response to Russia’s deployment of North Korean ground troops. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that North Korean troops had suffered casualties in combat with his country’s forces, and the first battles between them "open a new page in instability.”

CNN —A mummified ice age cub from Siberia is the first known mummy of a sabre-toothed cat, and its discovery is generating ripples of excitement among paleontologists. A, B and C reveal views of the mummified Homotherium latidens specimen: A is a thumb claw; B a second digit claw; and С a plantar view. However, the mummy also showed that sabre-toothed cubs differed dramatically from modern lion cubs of a similar age, Lopatin said. Its coat was darker, and its ears were smaller than those of lion cubs; it had longer forelimbs, a larger mouth opening and a more massive neck. Its paw is also more circular than that of a lion cub; in fact, its shape more closely resembles the paw of a bear, Tseng added.

The Prime Video series will be the first to come out of Amazon's deal with The Wonder Project, a Christian-focused production company for faith-based films and TV shows. BYBLOS, Lebanon — The anguish in Lebanese archaeologist Nader Siklaoui’s voice is clear as he films Israeli missiles slamming down near ancient Roman columns he has spent much of his life protecting. But the conflict is also taking a devastating toll on Lebanon’s unique and ancient heritage, with airstrikes wiping out centuries-old villages and endangering fragile, millenia-old archaeological sites, like the celebrated Roman ruins of Baalbek, a United Nations world heritage site. First responders evacuate an injured person following an Israeli airstrike near Tyre, Lebanon, on Oct. 30. What can we do?” said Siklaoui, who oversees heritage sites in southern Lebanon, speaking to NBC News at the national museum in the capital Beirut. Israel’s military says it only targets Hezbollah, but accuses the group of embedding itself in and near civilian infrastructure, including heritage sites.

Biden, Xi agree that humans, not AI, should control nuclear arms

"The two leaders affirmed the need to maintain human control over the decision to use nuclear weapons," the White House said in a statement. But it marks a first-of-its-kind step between the two countries in the discussion of two issues on which progress has been elusive: nuclear arms and artificial intelligence. Washington has been pushing Beijing for months to break a longstanding resistance to nuclear arms talks. Formal nuclear arms control negotiations have not been expected any time soon, despite U.S. concerns about China's rapid nuclear weapons build-up, even though semi-official exchanges have resumed. The U.S. defense department estimated last year that Beijing has 500 operational nuclear warheads and will probably field more than 1,000 by 2030.

This Arthur was played by Clive Owen in the 2004 film, “King Arthur,” alongside Keira Knightley as Guinevere. The sixth-century “Artognou stone," discovered in 1998, has linked Tintagel with King Arthur for some scholars, though others dismiss it. As an unwed woman and frequent wedding guest in 2024, I am maybe too attuned to the ways weddings have become increasingly extravagant. On Reddit, one user noted that being a bridesmaid in her best friend’s wedding in a Scandinavian town, where the friend’s family is from, is going to run her $8,000. And some guests are being denied plus-ones, making attending the wedding less of a joy and more of a dutiful chore. Even in times of high inflation, like now, while some may try to cut back, expensive weddings prevail. Weddings are the rare time in life where everyone you care about will likely come together — friends, family and loved ones.

Ukraine can defeat Russia if it and its Western backers learn from America's failure in the Vietnam War, a Ukrainian security expert argues. Danylyuk attributes America's failure in Vietnam to a "protracted multi-dimensional strategy by the Soviet Union, on whose help it was completely dependent." Crucial ways to defeat Russia's invasion can be found in the Soviet Union's multi-pronged strategy in Vietnam, analyst Oleksandr Danylyuk says. AP Photo/John T. WheelerThe first prong of this strategy would be to "stabilize the frontline and to render any successful offensive actions by Russian troops impossible." "The only explanation for the lack of a mass anti-war movement and large-scale protests is the absence of an organized and popular opposition in Russia," Danylyuk said.
