SpaceX and T-Mobile announced in August they were teaming up to provide mobile users phone service via Starlink satellites in low-Earth orbit. He also confirmed Tesla vehicles would have this feature in the future so they could connect directly to Starlink satellites for emergency calls and texts.

Feb 13 (Reuters) - T-Mobile (TMUS.O) users across the United States reported network outages that prevented several customers from making phone calls or using other cellular services late on Monday, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. The website, which tracks outages through a range of sources including user reports, showed there were more than 60,000 incidents reported. Many customers took to Twitter to share updates about the service disruption, with several users saying they saw 'SOS' notifications on their phones. The U.S. wireless carrier has been adding thousands of wireless subscribers lately, thanks to discounts on smartphones, bundled offerings, industry-low plan prices and an edge in 5G. Feb 1 (Reuters) - T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) missed fourth-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday despite adding thousands of wireless subscribers, as competitors ramped up their holiday season handset offers to lure customers. However, Verizon (T.N) and AT&T (T.N) ramped up their handset offers during the holiday season to tap into growing demand after the latest iPhone launch, hitting T-Mobile's torrid growth. By contrast, Verizon reported churn of 0.89% for monthly phone subscribers while AT&T's came in at 0.84%. It expects to add between 5 million and 5.5 million net monthly-bill paying subscribers in 2023, compared with the 6.4 million additions it reported in 2022. T-Mobile misses quarterly revenue estimates

Feb 1 (Reuters) - Wireless carrier T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) posted fourth-quarter revenue below Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, as competition heats up with rivals looking to add subscribers through more attractive promotional offers. The company added thousands of wireless subscribers over the last few years, thanks to hefty discounts on smartphones, industry-low plan prices and an edge in 5G. But a slowdown in wireless growth and bigger promotions by rivals amid rising costs are hurting T-Mobile now. The company said total revenue fell 2.5% to $20.27 billion in the quarter ended December, below Wall Street's estimate of $20.6 billion, according to Refinitiv data. T-Mobile expects to add between 5 million and 5.5 million net monthly-bill paying subscribers in 2023, compared with the 6.4 million additions it reported in 2022.
"With improving churn numbers and strong 5G wireless net adds, AT&T is entering 2023 in a good position," Third Bridge analyst Jamie Lumley said. Apart from 5G technology, AT&T is also investing in bolstering its fiber-optic network, which lets it sell both broadband services and video packages. "We will be operating in a challenging macroeconomic environment where wireless industry growth is likely to return to more normalized levels." Wireless stocks in the last 12 months Wireless stocks in the last 12 monthsFor the latest quarter, AT&T added 656,000 postpaid phone subscribers, above Factset estimates of 644,800 additions. The number also came in well above Verizon's 217,000 additions, although it failed to match T-Mobile's expected 927,000 additions.

Rogers-Shaw and Quebecor await approval from Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne to transfer Freedom Mobile Inc's spectrum license to Videotron. However, in its Thursday ruling, the tribunal said acquiring Freedom Mobile would allow Videotron to expand in new markets and ensure robust competition. The antitrust commissioner could still appeal after the tribunal details its decision over the next couple of days. The objection by the Competition Bureau was the main hurdle to overcome," Cormark Securities analyst David McFadgen said. He said there are "significant" revenue synergies for Rogers from bundling services, while Quebecor has better growth prospects from the Freedom Mobile deal.
The two companies had appealed the tribunal after the competition bureau rejected Shaw's proposal to sell Freedom Mobile Inc to rival Quebecor Inc's (QBRb.TO) Videotron unit for C$2.85 billion to facilitate the deal. However, in its Thursday ruling, the tribunal said such a sale would allow Videotron to expand in new markets and ensure competition remains robust. "I am very disappointed that the Tribunal is dismissing our application to block the merger between Rogers and Shaw," Matthew Boswell, Commissioner of Competition, said. The antitrust commissioner could still appeal after the tribunal lays out the details of its decision over the next couple of days. Rogers-Shaw and Quebecor now await approval from Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne to transfer Freedom Mobile's spectrum license to Videotron.
Dec 29 (Reuters) - Canada's competition tribunal approved on Thursday Rogers Communications Inc's (RCIb.TO) C$20 billion ($14.77 billion) bid for Shaw Communications Inc (SJRb.TO), ending the companies' 20-month-old dispute with the antitrust authority. Canada's competition bureau had blocked the merger - one of the country's biggest - on grounds that it would reduce competition. In a ruling late on Thursday, the Competition Tribunal dismissed the Commissioner of Competition's request to oppose the deal, saying that the deal is "not likely to prevent or lessen competition substantially." The panel also ruled that the proposed deal is not likely to lead to "materially higher" prices or a decline in service, quality or innovation. "I am very disappointed that the Tribunal is dismissing our application to block the merger between Rogers and Shaw.
Former T-Mobile boss John Legere suggested running Twitter for Elon Musk. Musk replied to Legere, saying "no" and that a technologist was needed to run Twitter. "You can stop managing daily business, and "content moderation" and then support product/technology, let someone else "run" Twitter," Legere said in the tweet. "I'm expensive but so is what you paid for twitter," Legere continued adding that Musk should be "leadership example of how to tweet." It's not the first time Musk has rejected a business leader's advice about how to run Twitter.
Oct 27 (Reuters) - T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) on Thursday raised its annual forecast for monthly bill-paying wireless subscriber additions for the third time this year, after beating estimates for quarterly additions as inflation-weary people lapped up its affordable plans. The telecoms giant has been offering discounts on smartphones and plans at industry-low prices to attract subscribers and stave off competition. T-Mobile added 854,000 monthly bill-paying phone subscribers in the third quarter, far higher than FactSet estimates of 724,800. In comparison, AT&T added 708,000 wireless subscribers in the third quarter, while Verizon, the largest U.S. carrier by subscribers, only added 8,000 customers in the same period due to its price hikes. T-Mobile expects to add between 6.2 million and 6.4 million net monthly-bill paying subscribers in 2022, up from a prior forecast of 6 million to 6.3 million.
T-Mobile had at least 11 contracts providing service to the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base and prison. Almost 800 people have been imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay since the prison opened in 2002. At least 11 of these contracts, according to research conducted by the coalition and shared with Insider, are for providing cell service to the Guantánamo Bay prison site. T-Mobile's Guantánamo Bay contracts are worth a meager amount compared to its other contracts worth more than a million a piece. The US has held almost 800 people in the Guantánamo Bay prison, often without being charged with a crime, since it opened in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks.
REUTERS/Andrew KellySept 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) named Chinese telecom companies Pacific Networks Corp, its wholly-owned subsidiary ComNet (USA) LLC and China Unicom (Americas) as threats to U.S. national security, the regulator said Tuesday. The designations are under a 2019 law aimed at protecting U.S. communications networks. The FCC said the companies are subject to the Chinese government's exploitation, influence and control, along with the associated national security risks. Earlier this year, the U.S. regulator voted to revoke China Unicom's U.S. unit, Pacific Networks and ComNet's authorization to operate in the United States, citing national security concerns. In March, the FCC added Russia's AO Kaspersky Lab, China Telecom (Americas) Corp (0728.HK) and China Mobile International USA (0941.HK) to the covered list.
T-Mobile also delivers faster data speeds than AT&T. You could justify paying more for AT&T for better coverage in rural areas. However, coverage is more important than data speeds, let alone monthly cost savings. And likewise, for AT&T, you might think that spending more may guarantee better coverage, but that's not always the case, as some areas are better served by T-Mobile.
