The state's 21-year age minimum, enacted as part of a 2003 gun control law, had been challenged in a 2021 lawsuit by three gun rights groups - Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, Firearms Policy Coalition and Second Amendment Foundation - and three individuals. The plaintiffs argued in their lawsuit that the age minimum violated the Second Amendment because 18- to 20-year-olds were permitted to possess guns at the time of the United States' founding. Menendez wrote that she had "reservations" about the historical analysis demanded by the Supreme Court, noting that "judges are not historians." Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld a 21-year age minimum for handgun purchases in Florida, based on 19th-century laws, but said those laws only concerned gun sales, not the right to carry guns. "Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay," the statement said. Craig "defended herself by tossing her hot coffee" at him, it added. The threat of AI is increasingly clear and well founded, and it is causing serious anxiety. Luckily, this wave of AI technology is projected to create 97 million new jobs, according to the World Economic Forum. Their forecast has proven to be true so far, as despite being in the early stages of development, AI technology has already significantly threatened a variety of industries. Just within the last couple of weeks, Buzzfeed announced that it will be using AI technology to generate content, while Netflix Japan has already created an animated film using AI-generated artwork, according to Vice. Simply put, the AI revolution is here to stay, and its ramifications will become increasingly noticeable in our everyday lives.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) is one of two Muslim women in Congress and has been on the foreign affairs panel since arriving to Congress in 2019. WASHINGTON—House Republicans were set to move forward with a vote to oust Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar from her position on the Foreign Affairs Committee, citing her criticism of Israel and past statements that were criticized as antisemitic. Blocking the Minnesota lawmaker from the committee requires a House vote, which could take place as soon as this week. All Democrats are expected to oppose removing Ms. Omar, and Republicans have been working to shore up support after several GOP lawmakers aired concerns over free speech. Republicans currently have a 222-212 majority in the House, giving them little room to maneuver.
CNN —ChatGPT is smart enough to pass prestigious graduate-level exams – though not with particularly high marks. The powerful new AI chatbot tool recently passed law exams in four courses at the University of Minnesota and another exam at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, according to professors at the schools. To test how well ChatGPT could generate answers on exams for the four courses, professors at the University of Minnesota Law School recently graded the tests blindly. ChatGPT fared better during a business management course exam at Wharton, where it earned a B to B- grade. “ChatGPT struggled with the most classic components of law school exams, such as spotting potential legal issues and deep analysis applying legal rules to the facts of a case,” Choi said.
The justices will weigh a claim brought by Geraldine Tyler, a 93-year-old whose property in Minnesota was seized by Hennepin County because she owed $15,000 in property taxes and related costs. The state says that under Minnesota law it “provides ample opportunity for property owners to protect their interests” before a property is seized. The state’s lawyers point out that owners have three years to pay the taxes and have an opportunity to repurchase the seized property. The case was brought by the Pacific Legal Foundation, a conservative legal group that often brings property rights cases. The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, is often sympathetic to property rights claims.
Moriarty, a candidate for Hennepin County attorney — whose jurisdiction includes Minneapolis — came out as queer on the campaign trail in January. “It could be a risky thing, coming out publicly during the campaign, but I felt it was important,” Moriarty told NBC News. She spent over three decades as a public defender in Hennepin County, and in 2014 she became the county’s first female chief public defender. “I had been talking about race and the policies of the current public attorney. I got accused of calling a justice partner a racist in public.”Moriarty wasn’t reappointed as chief public defender after that, she said.
In lieu of being incarcerated, he agreed to complete a court-supervised treatment program at Hennepin County Veterans Court. Minnesota’s new law establishes a consistent set of standards for every criminal court in the state, depending on the offender’s criminal history and the severity of the crime. But the Hennepin County Veterans Court has started to see some of its early impacts. At least 22 veterans have graduated its treatment program since the law went into effect on Aug. 1, 2021. The lack of data on the issue led the Council on Criminal Justice to launch a national commission to examine over the next two years why so many veterans land behind bars.
